A US unmanned aerial vehicle has crashed in eastern Afghanistan. The drone went down in Chaparhar-- a district in the center of Nangarhar province on Friday. A local official says the plane crashed because of technical problems. But the Taliban militants claim they shot it down. No casualties have been reported. Following the crash, American forces arrived at the site and took away the wreckage of the drone.

[17 July 2012] Paying Taliban to lay down arms is not effective - English US-led NATO says the strategy of buying the loyalty of Taliban members in Afghanistan has proved to be a failure as only around 5,000 militants have responded to the strategy by giving up their weapons. The US-led Western military alliance said that the plan has had very little effect across Afghanistan so far. The program, which started in October 2010, offers a stipend of USD 360 over three months to each Taliban militant who lays down arms and joins the program. The US-led invasion of Afghanistan was launched in 2001. The offensive removed the Taliban from power, but insecurity continues to rise across Afghanistan despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led troops there. The US-led war in Afghanistan, with civilian and military casualties at record high, has become one of the longest wars in US history. Press TV has conducted an interview with Carl Osgood, Executive Intelligence Review, from Washington, to further discuss the issue.

China\'s national Bureau of Statistics has released new figures on the country\'s economic outlook. The figures show China\'s economic growth was 7.5 percent in the second quarter of 2013-down from 7.7 percent in the first quarter of the previous year and the slowest pace in 23 years. Figures also show China\'s GDP has been staying under 8% for five straight quarters, which is a clear sign of distress. The government is now setting 7.5 percent economic growth target for 2013. Some economists have warned that China could face economic problems because of over-investment in its industries. Tension between Kabul and Washington continues to build as Afghan President Hamid Karzai delays signing a security pact with the United States. Washington issues a new warning, while Karzai sets new conditions for the deal. The US says it will pull all troops out of Afghanistan if Karzai does not promptly sign the agreement. The warning came during a meeting between Karzai and U-S National Security Advisor Susan Rice. Washington has repeatedly said that it cannot wait until after the April election, with Rice now calling it quote-not viable. However, Karzai has said that he will not back down from his refusal to sign the pact and will leave the decision to his successor. He has asked the US for a guarantee that it will halt all military operations targeting civilian homes. Karzai\'s spokesman says he has also called for a clear commitment to starting the peace process before the crucial security pact is signed.

A U-S drone has crashed in Afghanistan\\\'s eastern Nangarhar province. Shortly after the incident, Taliban militants arrived at the site and took away the crashed aircraft with them. The militants have claimed that they shot down the unmanned aircraft. U-S forces have also been deployed in the area searching for the drone. The U-S uses drones both for air strikes and reconnaissance operations. The attacks frequently cause civilian deaths in the war-torn country.

Iran has marked the second anniversary of the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan; In January 2012, a terrorist motorcyclist attached a magnetic bomb to Ahmadi Roshan\'s car in Tehran. Ahmadi Roshan\'s assassination was part of attacks against Iranian nuclear scientists. Professor Massoud Ali-Mohammadi, and professor Majid Shahriari were among other nuclear scientists who have been assassinated in the past couple of years by Israel-US agents in order to slow down the pace of Iran\'s scientific progress. Speaking at the commemoration ceremony, speaker of Iran\'s Parliament Ali Larijani says if there had not been such individuals as Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, we would not have reached the point where we are standing now. Larijani said Iran has made good progress in nuclear field. Referring to the Geneva action plan between Iran and the P5+1 group larijani said: Meanwhile the father of assassinated nuclear scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan says the West is not trustworthy. At the same time, a group of the families of the assassinated nuclear scientists, in a meeting with the visiting British parliamentary delegation condemned the Wet double standard policy towards terrorism saying that this sinister phenomenon is a serious threat to global peace and security. For his part head of the British delegation Jack Straw said that the British Government and Parliament condemn all forms of terrorism including the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists.
