Islamabad A teenage suicide bomber on Sunday struck a religious gathering of the Shia community killing at least 30 people and injuring nearly 200 others in the town of Chakwal in Punjab province hours after security forces were targetted near UN office in the heart of the federal capital. The suicide attacker detonated his explosives near the gate of an Imambargah or prayer hall in Chakwal some 90 kilometers south of Islamabad when he was barred from entering the complex by persons guarding the entrance. About 2000 worshippers had gathered for majlis - a religious ceremony - at the Imambargah when the attack occurred a little after 12.30 pm local time. Thirty people were killed by the blast state-run APP news agency reported. There was no official word on the incident though witnesses and reporters said nearly 200 people were injured in the blast. Witnesses said the suicide bomber was aged about 16 or 17 years and was dressed in black. TV channels beamed footage of blood and body parts spattered on the wall near the gate of the Imambargah.

According to local sources, the incident took place in Safari Park area of Karachi on Friday. Pakistani officials told Press TV that the bomb detonated after unknown gunmen opened fire on the demonstrators on the Quds Day. The blast came one day after gunmen dragged 20 Shia Muslim travelers off a bus and killed them at point blank range in northwestern district of Mansehra. Several others were injured during the attack on Thursday. The victims were going from Rawalpindi to Gilgit -- a heavily-Shia-populated area. In 1979, Imam Khomeini, the late founder of the Islamic Republic, designated the last Friday of the lunar month of Ramadan as the International Quds Day, during which Muslims across the world hold rallies to show their solidarity with Palestinians.

They are deeply worried now about their growing fatalities. This one was the worst single attack on US forces this month. It happened on May 16th. American forces were heading to their base when a bomber detonated his explosives near their convoy. 12 people were killed---including 6 Americans. Another suicide attack rocks the Bab Sharqi neighborhood in old Damascus, killing and critically injuring a number of civilians. Police say a man smuggled the explosive device in a plastic bag and detonated it in the middle of an ancient market. Insurgents have confirmed the number of dead, but claim the attack was caused by a mortar bomb. This while some unconfirmed reports say the bomber was wearing a suicide belt and blew himself up outside the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox church. A number of shops were also damaged in the blast, but the number of fatalities is likely to rise.

Gunmen have assassinated a prominent pro-Syria figure in southern Lebanon, Syrian official SANA news agency says. On Wednesday, the state-run news agency said Mohammed Darrar Jammo, the head of the political and international relations division of the International Organization for Arab Immigrants, was killed outside his home in the southern Lebanese coastal town of Sarafand. On April 29, Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi survived an assassination attempt after bomb attacks targeted his vehicle in downtown Damascus. The bombs were detonated in the al-Mazzeh neighborhood of the capital as Halqi\'s vehicle was passing through the area. Three bodyguards of the Syrian prime minister and the driver of the vehicle were killed in the blasts.

Back in October, seven people were killed in an attack by a female bomber in the same city. Volgograd is located in the volatile North Caucasus region.

Tel Aviv returns the remains of a young Palestinian woman who died during the second Intifada or uprising against the Israeli occupation 12 years ago. Palestinians in the West Bank town of Bethlehem were jubilant as an ambulance carrying the remains of Ayat al-Akhras arrived. The family is expected to bury the 18-year-old\\\'s remains on Monday.
