Turkish prosecutors in Istanbul have charged eight people with corruption and fraud. The defendants have been placed in pre-trial detention as part of a wide graft investigation. The eight are among 52 people who were arrested in a series of raids on Tuesday. They are accused of offences, including accepting and facilitating bribes for development projects. The sons of three ministers and several top business leaders are among those arrested. In the wake of the raids, several dozen police officers have also been sacked, accused of abusing power. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has labeled the corruption investigation a dirty operation aimed at undermining his government. The probe has prompted opposition parties to call for the government\\\'s resignation.

A Bahraini court has sentenced five protesters to 15 years in prison with two of the defendants in absentia. The Bahraini regime accuses the men of being behind two bomb attacks including one during last year\'s Formula one race. The kingdom\'s state news agency says the protesters have admitted being behind the blasts. Activists, however, say they have pleaded not guilty. The tiny Persian Gulf monarchy is accused of widespread and excessive use of force against protesters, including confessions under torture. Bahrain has been rocked by anti-regime demonstrations since February 20-11, with the protesters calling for the government to step down.

A key trial has been suspended right after its opening. An Egyptian judge has ordered the adjournment of the trial of the first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi. The trial of Morsi and his co-defendants has been scheduled for January 8. The decision came after the defendants began chanting slogans against the army, saying that they didn\'t recognize the authority of the court. Morsi is reported to have said that he is the legitimate president of Egypt, calling on the court \'to end this farce\'. Mohamed Morsi, and 14 Brotherhood members are accused of inciting violence which left 10 protesters dead. The Muslim Brotherhood has called the charges fabricated. Security is currently tight in Egypt with some 20,000 policemen deployed to the streets. Brotherhood\'s supporters are demonstrating in several cities and outside the venue of the trial. Reports say dozens of protesters have already been arrested.

Thirty-three people have faced military court hearings in Bahrain despite the lifting of the martial law by the Al Khalifa regime earlier this year. The defendants are facing charges including trying to topple the Bahraini government. Those facing charges are two former lawmakers, Jawad Firouz and Matar Matar, along with a female poet. The third hearing of the Mavi Marmara trial was held at Caglayan Courthouse in Istanbul on Sunday. The passengers of the flotilla as well as relatives and lawyers of the slain activists from 37 different countries attended the trial. There are 490 victims in the case, including flotilla passengers and relatives of the martyrs. The defendants who are tried as \\\"fugitive suspects\\\" include former Israeli Military Chief of General Staff Gen. Gavriel Ashkenazi, Naval Forces commander Vice Adm. Eliezer Marom, Israel\\\'s military intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin and Air Forces Intelligence head Brig. Gen. Avishai Levi. In the case on trial at the 7th Higher Criminal Court in Istanbul, the plaintiffs demand perpetrators of the violent attack to be sentenced to thousands of years in prison for a variety of serious crimes.

A lawyer for a nine-eleven suspect, who\'s jailed in the US Guantanamo prison, criticizes his limitations in even talking about the torture of his client. James Connell says the Guantanamo court has barred him from reading out his client\'s personal account of his alleged abuse. He says this hampers his ability to put up a strong defense. To add insult to the injury, Connell said he was also prevented to send the document to a third party such as the U-N\'s special rapporteur on torture. The lawyer insisted that the treatment violated the U-N Convention Against Torture. Other lawyers have also complained about the issue, saying it\'s important to discuss torture claims because all their five defendants face the death penalty if convicted. Connell has also revealed that his client suffered a head injury apparently during an interrogation by the C-I-A in 2006.

Reports say at least 20 pro-Morsi protesters have been arrested during clashes in the port city of Alexandria.

Egypt\'s public prosecutor orders the trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and more than 30 others on charges of espionage. A statement from the prosecutor\'s office has accused Morsi of plotting with foreign organizations to carry out terrorist attacks in the country. The toppled leader is also accused of committing acts of violence in Egypt. Local media say the other defendants include former presidential aides and Muslim Brotherhood leaders, who will be standing trial along with him. Morsi is already on trial over alleged involvement in the killings of opposition protesters. He was ousted by the military in early July, about a year after taking office as Egytp\'s first democratically-elected president.
