A Special Mindset for the Nights of Power (Laylatul Qadr)
Why donāt we take full advantage of Godās Kindness? We are prevented from benefiting from Godās Mercy because we count on ourselves. This barrier is arrogance, being conceited about our possessions and achievements.
We never talk to God as if we are a criminal, cutthroat, villain. No, we talk to God as if we are honorable people, āGod, as You are aware, Iām obviously one of Your good servants. And I havenāt had a fault thus far. But, I decided to turn to You tonight to say if You want to grant me more blessings, sure, I agree! Yes, I have some faults. It is possible I havenāt done as much as I should.ā This person is the epitome of arrogance. This person is not able to benefit from Godās Mercy.
During the Nights of Power (Qadr) I like to go amongst the crowd of worshippers and see who has come for the first time, a person who has a history of serious wrongdoing! And, he is too embarrassed to talk. People ask him, āSir, would you like a Qurāan?ā When he wants to take the Qurāan, he thinks, āIām too embarrassed to touch it. I have nothing, absolutely nothing to say.ā
If I find such a person during the Nights of Power, Iāll go and stand behind him. Iāll say, āGod, whatever you grant him, grant to me too.ā He doesnāt have a trace of arrogance. He has no pretentiousness at all. Others go back home happily. But, this person is still standing. Towards the end, he will say, āGod, did You look at me too?ā This kind of person will make use of Godās Mercy that night.
Benefiting from Godās Mercy is very hard. Why? Because we count on ourselves. Donāt count on yourself. Are you able to go to a gathering of worshippers to repent like that criminal? You wonāt go. Youād say, āItās impossible. Is it possible?! Thank God, Iām not that bad either.ā
We are even proud of our deeds, which we havenāt done! At least he has done some good deeds. We tell ourselves, āWe still have time until the end of the Month of Ramadan.ā āTill the end of the month?! But, you havenāt done anything yet!ā āIāll do something. Donāt worry!ā
We are prevented from benefiting from Godās Mercy because we count on ourselves. What should we do to stop counting on ourselves? The supplications narrated from the Household of the Prophet (āa) are excellent opportunities. A supplication says, āGod, even if I had done a good deed, I shouldnāt have relied on it. I should have relied on Your Grace. And now, I havenāt even done that good deed. So, I must only rely on Your Grace. What should I do if You donāt look at me?ā

==============================
We want to reach the goal that God has created us for. What should we do? From where should we start?
One starting point is choosing your goal well. Moving forward, having the insight to have a program to move forward and having enthusiasm to reach the destination, are very dependent on our seeing the goal. Whenever you see your heart feels cold, whenever you see you donāt have that needed speed and eagerness, whenever you see you canāt find the way and donāt know what you should do, know that your connection with your goal has become weak.
For each deed you should have the intention of getting close to God. When you say, āTo get close to God,ā youāre saying your goal. Mention your goal, then take action. Mention your goal, then take action. Doing good deeds and worshiping without mentioning the goal is useless. Interestingly you must keep repeating this. If you prayed but didnāt have the intention of getting close to God, you have to pray again. It was useless.
Having a goal is this important! This doesnāt mean just saying you believe and then thinking that now youāre a believer. You should keep remembering this goal and being concerned with it for each act. You should take action because of it. You want to chat with your friend or you want to rest. You want to get up at dawn. You want to go to work tomorrow. You should say it. You should repeat it in your heart. āIām doing these for that goal.ā You should repeat this.
How many actions do you do every day? Can you count the actions you do in your day? āI go to work.ā Before going to work, you do one hundred other things too. One is that you get dressed. Letās talk about getting dressed. We donāt count it as an activity. What is your intention for wearing these clothes? āIām just wearing clothes. I canāt go without clothes! I have to wear clothes.ā āWhy are you wearing these clothes?ā āIāve bought them to wear them!ā A tradition says that if you wear clothes to attract peopleās attention, God wonāt look at you as long as youāre wearing those clothes. āBut this was the most normal act. This was my everyday coat!ā What was your intention today for wearing this normal, everyday coat?ā
This is how religion trains us. Religiosity starts from this point. āA person wears clothes to attract peopleās attention. Do I have to look ugly? Should I wear a sack?!ā No, but why do you want to attract peopleās attention? Because of God or because of yourself? āJust forget it! You look at my intentions in too much detail!ā Itās fine if you look proper to others. Itās good that you bought good clothes. Whether your clothes are normal, average or good, say, āGod, I want to look good because of You.ā
[One says,] āBut I donāt remember to do this!ā If you donāt pay attention to this, you wonāt move toward your goal! Youāll also lose the opportunities you have. Then you will wonder why you donāt move forward. Itās because youāre not in a hurry and donāt feel a pressing need. Because of God! After putting on your clothes, wonāt you say goodbye before you go out? Why do you want to say goodbye? āBut we always say goodbye! Can I just make the intention that from now on whenever I say goodbye itās for the sake of God?ā
Why do you want to take a step toward your goal just once? You donāt want to put effort to move toward your goal again? Youāve become tired of your goal!? Is this repetition bothering you? One time forever? Maybe you want a computer to do it for you?! So you donāt want to become close to God at all. Go live your life.
A person who has a strong connection with his goal will remember it each time. Now that God has made it so simple and you can move toward God with your simple deeds, why donāt you do it? Youāre announcing to others, āPeople, I know God. This God is boring for you to want to remember Him all the time. So donāt come toward Him. My life is boring too. Donāt make your life boring.ā Is this what you want to announce? You havenāt gone toward God yourself and now you want to prevent others as well?
One should pay attention to his goal very much. And one should have a constant connection with his goal. Whenever you see your heart feels cold, whenever you see you donāt have that needed speed and eagerness, whenever you see you canāt find the way and donāt know what you should do, know that your connection with your goal has weakened. A person who has a strong connection with his goal will remember it each time.
For all your deeds, you should have the intention of getting close to God. āGetting close to Godā means saying our goal. Doing good deeds and worshiping without mentioning the goal is useless. Religiosity starts from this point.

This is a āmeccanā surah. At takathur signifies, \"the contending among people for superiority in the amount of property or number of children and men.\" It keeps man heedless of the hereafter, having no time for spiritual life. It is reported that the people of Bani Abd Munaf, Bani Qu-asi and Bani Sahm had an inordinate craving for acquisition of more and more wealth and adherents or supporters. When once they dug up the graves of their followers to count even the dead to prove the superiority of one tribe over the other this surah was revealed. Rivalry in such things monopolises the attention of individuals and communities and leaves no time for higher purposes of life and spiritual attainments, therefore a clear warning is given in this verse for devotion of some time to spiritual attainments also. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that whoever recites this surah before going to sleep at night will be saved from the torments of the grave. If this surah is recited in faraaāidh prayers, the reciter will get the reward of a hundred martyrs. If recited in the nawafil prayers, he will get the reward of fifty martyrs. It is especially recommended to recite surah at-Takathur in the āAsr prayers and the person who does this remains under the protection of ALLAH (swt) until the day ends. Recitation of this surah is a cure from headaches. Another way of reciting salaat al-Wahshat (apart from the commonly known way) is to recite Ayatul Kursi once and surah al-Ikhlas twice after the Surah al-Hamd of the first rakāaat and then recite surah at-Takaathur ten times after the Surah al-Hamd of the second rakāaat.

[24 May 2012] Egypt's historic presidential election - Middle East Today - English
Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi seems to be leading in the latest count of the polls in the first round of the first popular presidential election in Egypt since the former dictator Hosni Mubarak step down. The next and the final round will most probably be a face-off between Morsi and former Prime minister of Mubarak's regime, Ahmed Shafiq, who seems to be coming in second according to the Muslim Brotherhood's counts. In any case observers believe this is the first step to real popular representation in Egypt.

The ballot count was reportedly completed on Monday, indicating that Morsi won the presidential race with 51.8 percent of the votes, but that his rival Ahmad Shafiq, who was Egypt's former premier when ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak was in power, came in second with 48.2 percent.
