State organizations in Saudi Arabia have desecrated the Holy Qur\'an by discarding over fifty copies in Taif city\'s street sewerage canals. According to a Saudi official in the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, the incident was reported by a local student, who saw the holy books on his way home in Al-Salama district of Taif. The service company that specializes in opening drainage inlets was then called, and dozens of copies of the Quran were retrieved. A photo that shows desecrated books has now gone viral on the internet and social media websites. This is not the first time the Holy Quran has been desecrated in Saudi Arabia. Earlier this year, the move by prison officials in Al-Haer province to insult the Holy Book led to protests in different parts of the Kingdom. The desecration of the holy Quran in a country, which is the birthplace of Islam, has raised eyebrows in the Muslim world. Lebanon condemns Quran burning plan Lebanese President Michel Sleiman has condemned a US church\'s plan to burn copies of the Muslim holy book to mark the ninth anniversary of 9/11 attacks. Speaking on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, Sleiman said on Wednesday that the controversial decision contradicts Christian teachings and humanitarian values such as love and respect, a Press TV correspondent reported. \"The president condemns the announcement of a religious group in the United States of its intention to openly burn copies of the Quran,\" read a statement released by the president\'s office. Burning the Quran \"is a clear contradiction of the teachings of the three Abrahamic religions and of dialogue among the three faiths,\" Christianity, Islam and Judaism, AFP quoted the Christian president as saying. Pastor Terry Jones, who is part of the Dove World Outreach Center, a small evangelical Christian church in Gainesville, Florida, with an anti-Islam philosophy, has threatened to burn some 200 copies of the Quran on Saturday evening, the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The threat has drawn international condemnation with Muslims launching protest rallies around the globe. US officials have also denounced the plan but no legal measure has been taken yet to block the blasphemous move. The US State Department also called the move \"un-American,\" while the US Attorney General Eric Holder called the idea \"idiotic and dangerous.\" EU Foreign Affairs Chief Catherine Ashton condemned the planned act, while Arab League chief Amr Mussa dubbed Jones a \"fanatic\". Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has condemned the desecration of the Holy Quran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in the US. \\\"Without a doubt, the leaders of the global arrogance engineered [this plot] and [were in charge of] the command room of these atrocities,\\\" the Leader said. Ayatollah Khamenei added that \\\"Zionist think-tanks which hold the most influence on the US government and its security and military organizations\\\" were among the accomplices in the scenario. \\\"This incident and previous incidents clearly show that what the global arrogance is attacking today is the foundation of Islam and the Holy Quran,\\\" Ayatollah Khamenei said. Stephen Schlesinger (born August 17, 1942) is an author and political commentator. He is an Adjunct Fellow at the Century Foundation in New York City. He served as Director of the World Policy Institute at the New School University from 1997-2006. He is the son of historian Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr and oldest brother of journalist Robert Schlesinger. Schlesinger graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in 1964, and earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1968. Schlesinger served as a speechwriter and foreign policy advisor for New York Governor Mario Cuomo, who was elected during 1982 to the first of three consecutive terms. After Cuomo's defeat in 1994, Schlesinger worked for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT, a United Nations agency for human settlements planning) before accepting a job with the World Policy Institute. He resigned during June 2006. Schlesinger's book, "Bitter Fruit", published during 1982, a foreign policy work, has sold more than 100,000 copies. His subsequent study of the UN's founding, "Act of Creation", published during 2003, is the only authoritative account of the 1945 San Francisco Conference that drafted the UN Charter. Indian troops kill dozens in Kashmir At least 18 people have been killed and over 100 injured in Indian-controlled Kashmir as soldiers open fire on pro-independence rallies in disputed Himalayan region. Security forces opened fire on tens of thousands of protesters in the Budgam and Tangmarg areas. An Indian soldier was also killed in the violence. The protests were particularly intense following the news of the desecration of the Quran in the US. On Sunday, India imposed a curfew in many areas of Kashmir. However, people have been pouring out to the streets across Kashmir to protest against Indian rule despite the curfews. The latest round of public outrage began after a government forces' teargas grenade killed a teenager back in June. State Chief Secretary SS Kapur made the announcement in Kashmir's summer capital of Srinagar on Monday. "We have decided to impose a ban on the airing of Press TV broadcasts by local cable operators," Kapur told reporters. However, reports say more and more people in Kashmir continue to get their news from Press TV via internet services or direct broadcast satellites. A hunger strike by prisoners at the US-run Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba has entered its 100st day, amid national and international calls for the closure of the notorious prison. Nearly 130 out of a total of 166 inmates in the military detention and torture center were reported to be still on hunger strike on Friday. The strike began in February in protest to mistreatment by prison guards who intimidate the detainees by searching their personal belongings and deliberately mishandling their copies of the holy Qur\'an. Tension is still running high in Egypt. More demonstrations have been held in the cities of Giza and Alexandria. Protesters in the two cities chanted slogans denouncing last year\'s military coup. In Alexandria, an angry crowd torched a vehicle after police targeted them. Some of the protesters also gathered at the journalists\' union and burned copies of government newspapers in a show of discontent over the curbs on freedom of expression. Muslim Brotherhood supporters have been staging almost daily protests to demand the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. Friday\'s demonstrations turned violent after security forces clashed with protesters in major cities. At least 17 protesters were killed and dozens injured. Meanwhile, the army-installed government pledged to confront the Muslim Brotherhood with full force after the group called for a million-man march on Wednesday.
