c Iranians are becoming more aware and turning towards renewable energy sources. They're also trying to find ways to reduce energy consumption.
The solar water heating systems on display at the 3rd international energy saving exhibition in Tehran are the first the draw the visitors who may not just be big fans green technology but simply more concerned about their gas and electricity bills.
Now that energy subsidies have been eliminated and gas prices are high people are turning to other sources of energy. Solar water heaters can help reduce their energy consumption by 70 percent.
Ever since the government has introduced its policies to change energy consumption pattern more and more people have been considering sources other than fossil fuels. The effect can be seen on this annual exhibition. More than 80 companies have taken part including more than 10 foreign companies from China, Germany, Turkey and France.
Even wind turbines have found their way to the exhibition.
Iran is the 16th producer of electricity in the world and is working to achieve sustainable development in the field of renewable energy. Iran is now producing 2100 Mega Watts of electricity from renewable sources. The target set for 2025 is 12000 Mega Watts which is 10 percent of the annual production.
Meanwhile figures show that Iranians are becoming energy aware and changing their consumption habits.
The total power peak demand in summer has decreased to 39140 megawatts from 40150. This shows that people know the value of energy and are consuming more wisely.
And as the country moves towards commercialization of Green Technology this annual exhibition will continue to focus on sustainable energy, renewable energy and green energy over the coming years, while providing visitors with essential information about innovative eco-products and services.

A lecture by CA M.R. Venkatesh in India. Notice that this lecture was uploaded on googlevideo on 10 Feb 2008. The Economist cover that he refers to was published in Jan 2008. This is a very insightful and interesting lecture. Worth a consideration even if you do not agree with all what he says. --- By encouraging LOCAL CONSUMPTION I think he means developing a locally sustainable economy with a savings culture and responsible consumption.--- The point about the connection between family and consumerism may have been loosely argued in the lecture but it is not totally baseless. If considered in the broader context of the rise of individualism and materialism in America it makes sense. Individualism seeks identity. Materialism suggests finding that in competitive consumption of material goods. Hence the idea of shopping for identity - what you consume and how much you own define you.--- Also see Story of Stuff and Confessions of an Economic Hitman videos on this site.

Friends, let this not come as a surprise to you. This is the reality we are living in where it is ‘estimated that one billion people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. That’s roughly 100 times as many as those who actually die from these causes each year. About 24,000 people die every day from hunger or hunger related causes… Three-fourths of the deaths are children under the age of five.’
--HOW YOU CAN HELP --
Don’t waste natural resources. Be thankful to God for His gifts and blessings. Be mindful of your responsibility toward other human beings. Think about what the Prophet (saws) would do. Have mercy and compassion toward all humankind. Next time you spend money on those unnecessary luxuries of your life, think for a moment about the plight of the poor and oppressed around the world. Be aware of the materialistic forces and the contradictions of the dominant economic systems that are at the roots of global inequality. Don’t become a part of this system. Don’t become a slave of consumerism and endless materialistic competition.
Understand that it is not enough to just keep yourself from engaging in consumerism. It's not always easy to protect yourself and your family against the multi-billion dollar industry of marketing. Join forces with other like-minded people. Strengthen your communities that can serve as a buffer against corporations. Engage in collective action. Transform people's consciousness and hyper-consumeristic lifestyles. Among other things, join a local organization that is working against subtle forms of oppression, like hunger, poverty, illiteracy, domestic violence, anorexia and bulimia, perfect body images, and endless materialistic competition. If there isn’t any, start one today!
For ideas, you can look into doing online activism. Check out moveon.org’s work. Some online organizations also invite web surfers to click on their sites regularly. They say every click earns them revenue to support their causes. The Hunger Site is an example. Some may also invite you to buy their T-shirts and other souvenirs. I guess, you can buy these items if you think they can help spread the word and encourage people to join a good cause. But, in general, more shopping and more consumption cannot be a solution to human suffering. Selling consumers to products through clicks or ads is exactly what we need to shun. Because that feeds into the same loop of consumerism. My suggestion: Donate directly! And, encourage others to do the same!
Lastly, remember the advice Imam Ali gave in his Last Will:
“My advice to you is to be conscious of Allah and steadfast in your religion. Do not yearn for the world, and do not be seduced by it. Do not resent anything you have missed in it. Proclaim the truth; work for the next world. Oppose the oppressor and support the oppressed.”
Become a friend and supporter of oppressed people and an enemy of oppressors and all forms of oppression."

The Story of Stuff - Ch.5 - Consumption - English

The Story of Stuff will take you on a provocative tour of the consumer-driven culture in the US and the increasing consumerism and materialism in the rest of the world - from resource extraction to iPod incineration - exposing the real costs of our use-it and lose-it approach to stuff. -- ISLAM is against materialism because it results in social injustice and oppression. But also because Islam wants to nurture the inner spirituality and other potential noble qualities in human beings - and materialism - that is the slavery of this world - takes them in exactly the opposite direction. Often non-religious movements choose to resist materialism because of its consequences on society - that is they resist materialism for instrumental - means to ends - reasons. Islam however places importance on simplicity and modesty because they are valuable in themselves for human perfection. Hence even if the world becomes full of resources and everyone has more than what he or she needs Islam would still stress on simplicity and modesty in the lifestyles and pursuits of its followers. With its ideals of human perfection and emphasis on the eternal life in the hereafter Islam provides a powerful rational and emotional stimulus for individuals to abstain from materialism and channel their self-interest into attaining lofty human ideals and qualities. The US has approved legislation to impose sanctions on foreign companies that help supply fuel to Iran, a move Washington believes will stop Iran's nuclear programme.
Iran is the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, but lacks sufficient refining capacity to meet domestic fuel needs, forcing it to import up to 40 per cent of its gasoline consumption.
Tehran says it is not bothered by the sanctions and it will look elsewhere. As if to make a point of its defiance, Iran has test fired one of it is longer-range missiles.

China\'s national Bureau of Statistics has released new figures on the country\'s economic outlook. The figures show China\'s economic growth was 7.5 percent in the second quarter of 2013-down from 7.7 percent in the first quarter of the previous year and the slowest pace in 23 years. Figures also show China\'s GDP has been staying under 8% for five straight quarters, which is a clear sign of distress. The government is now setting 7.5 percent economic growth target for 2013. Some economists have warned that China could face economic problems because of over-investment in its industries. But Sheng said that in terms of urbanization and consumption, and levels of development in its interior, China still has enormous potential.

Perhaps it would be hard for any country with easy access to abundant oil and gas resources, to adapt itself with a parsimonious pattern of energy consumption. This is what is happening in Iran. In fact the country sees no alternative but to move towards clean renewable energy, at a time when most of its large cities are struggling with environmental pollution.
This is the sixth year that companies from Iran and a number of foreign countries gather in the renewable energy exhibition to display their latest achievements based on clean and efficient energy. The main objective of the event is to promote the use of energy from non fossil fuel resources such as solar panels, wind turbines and geothermal heat. Some experts believe that a considerable shift from oil and gas to clean alternative substitutes is far from reach in a short time period.

How Does Arbaeen Promote A Divine Lifestyle? | IP Talk Show | English

Our condolences to all the believers, all across the world, wherever they are, upon the holy months of Muharram and Safar.
This year, countless millions across the world once again proudly commemorated the mission of Imam Husayn ibn Ali (A) and most eagerly mourned over the martyrdom of Imam Husayn (A), and his family members and companions who accompanied his eminence into the divine hands of martyrdom as they stood up for Truth and Justice against the overwhelming forces of evil and falsehood.
And this year, once again, millions of people will gather around the pivot of Imam Husayn (A) on the Day of Arbaeen, commemorating the 40th day after his martyrdom.
Yet, what are some inherent attributes of the western systems prevalent across the world in the present-day?
Is there truly objectivity in journalism in the western world, especially when we see that for many years there was a media blackout as regards to the Arbaeen procession?
How does the Arbaeen procession break the preconceived imposed notions of individualism and materialism?
And are the so-called virtues promoted by western civilization based upon a moral and ethical duty or a mere self-centric personal gain?
Via what means do the Arrogant Powers try to create anti-ethical attributes in the society?
And on the other hand, what are some of the values that are promoted in the Husayni narrative?
Is there a manifestation of the Truth where it exists objectively?
What is one of the hallmarks of materialism?
And what does it mean that your identity is based upon your consumption when in the sphere of materialism?
And what does it mean that people become hollow once God is taken out of society; and subsequently, what is placed in that hollow vessel by the Taghut powers?
And what must the Taghut powers of the world do if they want to enslave humanity in order to maximize their self-interest profit and gain, which most surely comes at the expense of the common masses?
How does the Arbaeen procession in ode of Imam Husayn (A) break the aforementioned demonic spell of the global Taghut powers?
And with all this in mind, how does the Arbaeen procession commemorating the mission and martyrdom of Imam Husayn (A) promote a divine lifestyle that we can all follow?
In order to answer these questions and more, we humbly invited Sayyid Agha Ali Raza from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to help explain and answer for us, \\\"How Does Arbaeen Promote A Divine Lifestyle?\\\"
Salutations be upon Husayn!
Salutations be upon Ali ibne Husayn!
Salutations be upon the children of Husayn!
Salutations be upon the companions of Husayn!
