The Angolan government says Islam is not a religion but a sect, and as part of the ban, all mosques will be destroyed in the Christian-majority country. According to the Islamic Community of Angola, there are more than eighty mosques and about half a million Muslims in the country, and the number is growing. Angola\'s culture ministry says the houses of worship of other faiths which have not been legalized will also be demolished. Angola is the first country in the world to ban Islam.

The broadcaster reported that a Syrian soldier taking refuge in the country says that he and his comrades were trying to avoid hurting protesters by firing warning shots, but those who refused to open fire on protesters were shot dead. "I've seen Iranians and Hezbollah operators giving instructions to shoot, and those who refused were immediately shot dead," the alleged fugitive Syrian soldier told NTV, adding that the soldiers were mostly shot from behind or in the neck. The Turkish broadcaster has also claimed that Syrian forces have opened fire on unarmed civilians in al-Rastan. "We opened fire on everyone, the young, the old... Women were raped in front of their husbands and children," the army defector told NTV. Heavy clashes were reported as troops and tanks moved into the city on Sunday and gunmen targeted civilian areas including a hospital. The government says it entered the town to restore order after some 120 security forces were killed there about a week ago. People in Jisr al-Shughour gathered to thank government troops for protecting them against the gunmen.

It controls Gaza's airspace and territorial waters and restricts the movement of people or goods in or out of Gaza. The Israeli regime waged a 22-day Christmas war on the densely populated coastal sliver in 2008 which left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead including at least 300 children. The offensive also destroyed 4,000 houses and devastated a large portion of infrastructures in the blockaded strip. Israeli military forces also targeted UN-run schools and centers. More than 50,000 people were also displaced as a result of the three-week war. Tel Aviv also used internationally-banned weapons, including white phosphorus bombs, against the Gazans during the three-week war. On December 27, the Israeli military's Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz warned that Tel Aviv would launch another war on the coastal enclave. The Israeli military, meanwhile, frequently bombs the besieged sliver, claiming that the acts of aggression are conducted for defensive purposes.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says European countries will \"pay the price\" if they send weapons to foreign-backed militants in the Arab country. Assad also rejected US, British and French claims that Syrian forces had used chemical weapons against the foreign-backed militants fighting in the country.
