Syrian rebels are under pressure to accept the UN-backed peace plan, after Damascus rubber-stamped the deal. It includes appeals for a ceasefire - but no calls for President Assad to step down - something the opposition and Washington have been calling for. The US is pushing for the rebels to unite, with some factions rallying behind the Syrian National Council at a conference in Turkey. RT talks to journalist and author Afshin Rattansi, who's long been covering events in the region.

[22 April 2012] F1 race hinders Bahrain revolution - News Analysis - Presstv - English
In Bahrain, the determination of Formula One's governing body to press ahead with the Grand Prix has delighted the country's rulers, who portray it as a sign that the Persian Gulf state is back to normal. Yet, it is anything but that.
Are Western govt.'s, with strong security and commercial ties with Bahrain, behind them, and the sponsors? Protesters have called for Days of Rage prior and after Formula One. Meanwhile, Saudi-backed Bahraini forces continued human rights violations, along with UK's John Yates threat of the use of live rounds, much more coming up shortly in this edition of the News Analysis.

[06 June 2012] 'US commits gross HR abuses in Bahrain' - English
Bahrain's revolution still goes on with the Saudi-backed forces' heavy-handed crackdown on anti-government protesters in several villages.
In the village of Jad Ali near the capital, tear-gas was used against young protesters out shouting "Down with Hamad" - the ruling monarch. Similar clashes took place in the northeastern village of Sitra.
Bahrain has been rocked by anti-government protests for more than a year now. Manama, with the direct backing of Saudi Arabia, has cracked down on the protests with all possible means.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Kamel Wazne, a political analyst from the Lebanese capital, Beirut, to further shed light on the issue.

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the recent abduction of three UN peacekeepers by anti-Syria militants in the Israeli occupied Golan Heights. The UN said Thursday that the foreign-backed militants had seized the three peace observers in the occupied Syrian territories early on May 15, which was the third such an incident within two months.
In March, 21 Philippine UN peacekeepers were abducted for five days by militants in Syria. Four more were also seized by the militants earlier this month and released on May 12.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Ralph Schoenman, political commentator, about this issue.

The military-backed government in Egypt is planning to ratify a draft law on combating terrorism.
The interim government wants to put the law into effect before the upcoming trial of Egypt\'s ousted president Mohamed Morsi on November 4th. The government expects potential unrest during the trial and fears that the mandatory expiry of the state of emergency laws in mid-November will pave the way for more protests. The curfew was imposed following the brutal crackdown against Morsi supporters at Rabaa and Nahdah and the ensuing violence.

Egypt\'s military-backed government has delayed a referendum on the constitution without giving a reason for it.
Interim Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi says he expects the referendum to be held in the second half of January, not next month as previously expected. The new constitution, now being drafted, is expected to curb the influence of Islamic laws and ease a ban on Mubarak-era officials to run for office. The interim government was installed after the army ousted the country\'s first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in July. Since then, Egypt has been the scene of rowdy protests, mostly against the military. Security forces have frequently clashed with Morsi supporters.
