[23 June 2012] Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza - English Israeli warplanes carried out a series of air raids in Gaza, targeting many positions across the blockaded coastal territory. People here are angry over what they say the silence of the international community for not taking any action to put pressure on Israel to end its military attacks. Press TV met Abu Shaban family who escaped unharmed after their house was targeted. Israel has stepped up its assaults on Gaza over the recent days. The attacks have claimed over a dozen lives in Gaza since Monday. A number of Gazans, including at least one child, have been killed and many others injured in the latest Israeli attack.International activists say the world has to condemn Israel's military attacks on innocent Palestinians in Gaza and take decisive measures to end the suffering of Gaza's 1.7 million.Israel frequently carries out air raids and conducts ground incursions in Gaza. The blockaded coastal enclave has been cut of from the outside world as Israel controls Gaza's border crossings, airspace and territorial waters, turning the impoverished territory into the world's largest open air prison.

When the enemy failed, it always resorted to hitting people, even those who had no relation with the resistance. The enemy takes such action because it knows that this is our point of weakness when it fails in confronting us militarily.\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"This is a point of pride for us, as it points out that the relation between the resistance and the people is an emotional, humanitarian, moral, and spiritual relation, and that both are one. The resistance had never acted like it was an imported resistance, like some fighters act these days, hence they don’t care about people. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned on Sunday that the wide-ranging ground offensive in the Gaza Strip would be "full of surprises." A ground offensive in the densely-populated Gaza is expected to drastically increase the death toll of the civilian population. The latest assaults bring the number of Palestinians killed to over 488 with 2790 others wounded. The UN says that about 25 percent of the casualties were civilian deaths - including at least 34 children. According to Israeli army officials, at least 30 of its soldiers have been wounded since the start of the ground campaign. Amid global condemnation of the ongoing violence in the region, the UN Security Council failed to agree on a united approach to resolve the crisis. Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani talks about his latest book on the Darfur Conflict and the shady Save Darfur movement. His book is called SAVIORS AND SURVIVORS. The talk was at UNCA. In this clip Mamdani argues that 20 to 30 percent died from direct violence. Others died because of independent causes like desertification and drought which actually preceded the conflict. The cause of violence was the civil war in Darfur and the insurgency and counter-insurgency - all with separate origins and causes. The third consideration was the Cold War which involved America France Israel on one side and on the other Libya and Soviet Union. Each side armed different sides in the civil war in Chad. In Darfur the Chad opposition organized itself and launched assaults on Chad.

The honoring ceremony took place at Tehran’s Azadi Cinema with Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hosseini, Deputy Culture Minister for Cinematic Affairs Javad Shamaqdari and secretary of the festival Mohammad Khazaei attending. Stone converted to Islam at the office of Shia cleric Ayatollah Mohammad Nasseri Dowlatabadi in the city of Isfahan last week. On receiving his award, Stone expressed his thanks to Iranians and hoped to make joint films to help improve relations between Iran and the United States, the Persian service of ISNA reported on Friday. He also explained about his reasons for accepting Islam and said that as a student of history, he had studied different religions and it was because of his personal interest that he chose Islam; adding that actually, it was Islam that had invited him. “The conversion to Islam is not abandoning Christianity or Judaism, with which I was born. It means I have accepted Muhammad (S) and other prophets,” Stone, whose famous father is Jewish and mother is Christian, had told AFP last week. Stone came to Iran in early February to attend the 30th Fajr International Film Festival, which ended on February 12. The ceremony continued with a brief speech delivered by Hosseini, in which he hoped Sean Stone would be strong and steady enough to fight against any kinds of attacks or assaults. “If Islam is introduced as a symbol of beauty to the world, all people would be attracted to it,” he said, stressing that Stone was seeking the truth and had discovered it here. Hosseini also expressed his thanks to the filmmakers who tried harder this year to help achieve the ideals of the Islamic Revolution. The ceremony was brought to an end by paying tribute to the managers of several film studios and theaters across Tehran.

The city of Detroit, Michigan made headlines last month when police reported that there were 13 people shot in 24 hours. But other cities in the US are also starting to see an increase in violent crime. The surge in violence comes as the FBI releases figures that indicate that the crimes are part of a nationwide trend. The FBI figures suggest the overall increase in violence is due to a surge in crimes committed in larger cities-- after six years of steady declines. Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assaults. Nationally, those crime rates have edged up 1.2 percent year-over-year, according to the FBI\'s Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report. The largest increases happened in cities with populations of between 500,000 and one million people. This is where violent crime rose by 3.7 percent, including a 12.5 percent spike in murder rates.
