The US government is under renewed pressure from pro-Israel lobbyists over talks with Iran. Pro-Israel advocates have met with senior White House officials to seek explanations about recent negotiations with Iran. They\'re worried about the possible easing of draconian sanctions on Iran while they seek a military option down the road. White House officials say they\'ve told the lobbyists the U-S wants to resolve the nuclear issue through diplomacy. The Obama administration also wants Congress to stop introducing new sanctions on Iran in order to give talks a chance. Pro-Israel lobbyists namely AIPAC are pressuring the government to retain harsh sanctions. Some US politicians suspect lobbyists of trying to push anti-Iran measures to a tipping point that could lead to a conflict.

Israel has just finished military drills in what appeared to be a campaign to prepare for a potential war - with Syria. Israel launched the drills following Russia\'s announcement that it would supply one of its most advanced anti aircraft missile systems named S-300 to the Syrian government. Following this announcement, the Israeli minister of military affairs Moshe Ya\'alon immediately issued a statement that the military would bomb the Russian missile systems if they were deployed in Syria. However, Palestinian military expert Wasef Erekat says Israel is merely making empty threats. israel has given final approval for the construction of 272 new homes in West Bank settlements, just hours after U-S Secretary of State John Kerry\\\'s departure. Under the latest plans, 250 apartments were approved for Ofra and Karnei Shomron, in the heart of the West Bank, 53 of which have already been built without any permit. An Israeli Defense Ministry official said that the initial approval for new buildings was given several months ago and added that the latest announcement was just a formality. The Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now criticized Israel\\\'s latest move, saying Tel Aviv had the option of suspending settlement plans and giving the so-called peace talks a chance, but instead chose to push ahead with the expansion of settlements. The latest announcement came shortly after Kerry\\\'s departure. The U-S secretary of state had earlier urged Israel to refrain from taking any steps that would derail the negotiations. The international community considers settlements illegal, and the Palestinians have long viewed settlement construction as a key obstacle to reaching a peace agreement.

Israel\\\'s espionage activities have increasingly become a concern for Lebanon. Beirut is now calling for equipment to block Tel Aviv\\\'s intelligence gatherings. Reports say Lebanese lawmakers as well as foreign, defense and communication ministers will meet with ambassadors of five permanent members of the UN Security Council next week. The European Union\\\'s high representative in Lebanon will also attend the meeting. Lebanese officials are expected ask European countries to sell Beirut anti-spying equipment that it needs to counter Israel\\\'s intelligence activities. Tel Aviv has increased its espionage by installing eaves-dropping stations across Lebanon\\\'s southern border. Beirut says Tel Aviv\\\'s spying activities have negatively affected not only Lebanon but also UN peace-keeping forces.

The email was from a legal representative of Gestion Redbourne PDP Inc., the owners of the building housing Cinema du Parc. The Cinema has hosted dozens of expositions in the past three years, and this is the first time that such action has been taken. This move on the part of Redbourne seems entirely political, to muzzle the message of Human Drama in Gaza. On Monday, Feb. 15th, the critically acclaimed Human Drama in Gaza Photo Exposition in Montreal was threatened with closure by Gestion Redbourne PDP Inc., the real estate management firm owning the property housing the Exposition. A legal representative of Redbourne, Lieba Shell, sent an email late in the day to the exposition host, Cinema du Parc, ordering the removal of the exposition and threatening legal action if the exposition were not taken down by evening. Cinema du Parc and Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) – the producer of the exposition – asserted through their legal advisor, Mark H. Arnold, that such threats from Redbourne were not lawful. Human Drama in Gaza was launched in mid-January, and received very positive reviews in several media. Redbourne, however, demanded the removal of the exposition based on a paragraph in the lease that Cinema du Parc has with Redbourne relating to “purely cinemagraphic use” of the premises. Arnold, however, asserted that the cinema’s hosting of a photo exposition would very much constitute cinemagraphic use of the premises. Officials with Cinema du Parc also pointed out that the cinema has hosted dozens of photo expositions in the past several years, and has never had a complaint from Redbourne, the landlord. “This move on the part of Redbourne is clearly political,” declared Thomas Woodley, President of CJPME. “Cinema du Parc is known for its ongoing expositions which touch on important issues of social concern, and Redbourne never had an issue in the past.” Last week, both Cinema du Parc and Place du Parc (the shopping mall housing the cinema and owned by Redbourne) received emails and calls from individuals unhappy with the Human Drama in Gaza exposition. The complaints accused the exposition of being anti-Israel, but stopped short of questioning the credibility of the exposition content. “The suffering of the 1.5 million people of Gaza is an important social issue like any other,” asserted Woodley. “The fact that certain people wish to stifle open discussion on Gaza is even more a reason to bring the debate out into the open.” According to CJPME, the exposition itself seeks to put a human face to the misery of the people of Gaza, and the poignant resilience of a people facing severe adversity. The captions accompanying the photos cite statistics and legal analyses of Israel’s 22-day assault on Gaza of last winter. The legal advisor to CJPME pointed out that if security forces from Redbourne were to attempt to forcibly remove the exposition, they would be considered trespassers. Anti-Israeli protesters clashed with riot police outside an Israeli-Swedish Davis Cup tennis match in Sweden on Saturday but did not break through police lines. Due to security concerns the three-day match is being played in an empty stadium in this southwestern port city which has a large immigrant population.

Dozens of delegates have walked out of a United Nations conference on racism after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's president, described Israel as a "racist government". Ahmadinejad told delegates at the summit in Switzerland on Monday, that after the Second World War the United States and other nations had established a "cruel, oppressive and racist regime in occupied Palestine". "The UN security council has stabilised this occupation regime and supported it in the last 60 years giving them a free hand to continue their crimes," he told delegates at the Durban Review Conference hall in Geneva. Dozens of diplomats from countries including Britain and France left the hall in protest as he made the remarks. Ahmadinejad also asked the conference: "What were the root causes of the US attacks against Iraq or invasion of Afghanistan? "The Iraqi people have suffered enormous losses ... wasn't the military action against Iraq planned by the Zionists ... in the US administration, in complicity with the arms manufacturing companies?". Many delegates who remained in the hall applauded Ahmadinejad's comments.

The demonstration was held a day after the station\\\'s security guard beat a homeless man, sending him to the hospital with a brain hemorrhage. The 20-year-old man had reportedly jumped over the turnstile to board a train without paying. The guard\\\'s brutality sparked underground protests at metro stations in Istanbul and Ankara. Local media outlets say one person has been injured in the Ankara protest. In Istanbul, anti-government activists held up pictures of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan\\\'s son Bilal and shouted slogans against the government and condemning the latest corruption scandal.

Dozens of demonstrators have pretended to be dead on the streets of Lisbon, simulating what they say are the devastating effects of a NATO airstrike. Anti-NATO protester took to the floor as they participated in what they called a flashmob for peace, outside the Rossio train station, in Lisbon, Portugal, on Thursday. The flash-mob protest against the war in Afghanistan is just one of many demonstrations surrounding the two-day NATO summit in the Portuguese capital.
