[22 June 2012] Egypt What is happening And what should happen Comment - English Thousands of angry Egyptians have camped out in the historic square since Wednesday, calling on the military council to quit power immediately as the electoral authorities delayed the announcement of the final results of the presidential run-off on Thursday as scheduled. Egypt's election committee said on Wednesday they want to look into all complaints from the two candidates before making an announcement. The protesters say the move could be a sign that the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) is trying to declare former premier Ahmed Shafiq the winner. Egyptians cast their ballots in a two-day presidential runoff election on June 16 and 17, which pitted the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, Mohammed Morsi, against Shafiq. On June 18, a member of the Egyptian Electoral Committee confirmed that Morsi is in the lead in the country's run-off presidential election. Early on the day, the Brotherhood had declared Morsi's victory over Shafiq in the voting. Officials from the group had said that Morsi has won 52.5 percent of the counted ballots.

Israel has made an announcement that they produce tenders for a further 2000 new illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem al Quds. Israeli prime minister made the announcement just one week before the Israelis are set to release 24 Palestinian prisoners who have been held in Israeli jails since before the Oslo agreement in 1993. Members of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation slammed the Israeli authorities for defying calls from both the EU and the US to halt settlement expansion and further stated that this move could seriously jeopardize the US brokered Palestinian Israeli negotiations.

What is behind the surprise Saudi decision to provide 3 billion dollars worth of military aid to the Lebanese army? The announcement of this decision was recently made by Lebanese president Michel Suleiman, after Saudi King Abdullah and French president Francois Hollande apparently agreed on the issue during their summit in Riyadh. The deal says Paris is to play the role of the military supplier, while Riyadh will take care of the financing. No one has so far mentioned that the military aid could be used to deter Israel. Tel Aviv has launched wars on Lebanon ever since its existence but no such military aid has ever been granted to Lebanon. Moreover Israeli officials have not made any objections to this announcement. Hence the logical, widespread conclusion is that this step targets Hezbollah. In a recent visit by Suleiman to Riyadh, the Saudi Monarch reportedly called for the Lebanese army to stop Hezbollah from joining the fight in Syria. Many experts believe that this is a Saudi reaction to the role Hezbollah has played in thwarting Riyadh\\\'s agenda of toppling Syrian president Bashar Assad. Saudi Arabia\\\'s Lebanese allies in the March 14 movement appeared to confirm this view, with members of the movement describing this declaration as a blow to Hezbollah. Meanwhile, the designated supplier of the military aid, France, is believed to be the main force behind the recent E-U decision to blacklist the military wing of Hezbollah. Saudi Arabia is eager to escalate its campaign against Hezbollah, perhaps showing Washington that it can seek support elsewhere. France meanwhile welcomes the 3 billion dollar package, as it\\\'s trying to find ways to boost its austerity-hit economy. Now the main question is whether the deal could possibly change the Lebanese\\\'s anti-Israeli doctrine into an anti-Hezbollah stance?

The new US administration has not shied away from criticising Israel's illegal settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territorities. And when Israel announced plans to build 1,600 new settler homes in East Jerusalem while Joe Biden, the US vice-president, was visiting the country last week as part of a Middle East peace inititative - the US was not happy. A senior US official has called the timing of the announcement an "insult". And Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, had earlier told Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, that his government was putting "US ties at risk" by failing to take action towards renewed Middle East peace talks. Although Netanyahu has apologised for the timing of the announcement, Israel is not showing any signs of stopping the settlement expansion and the US is not backing down from its tough criticism.

Israel has just finished military drills in what appeared to be a campaign to prepare for a potential war - with Syria. Israel launched the drills following Russia\'s announcement that it would supply one of its most advanced anti aircraft missile systems named S-300 to the Syrian government. Following this announcement, the Israeli minister of military affairs Moshe Ya\'alon immediately issued a statement that the military would bomb the Russian missile systems if they were deployed in Syria. A pro-autonomy movement in oil-reach eastern Libya has unilaterally declared the formation of a shadow government. The announcement has drawn reactions from Tripoli. The head of the newly declared government says it aims to improve distribution of resources and undermine central authority claiming it has discriminated against the eastern region. The central government in Tripoli swiftly rejected the declaration. The announcement from the pro-autonomy movement comes months after it declared the eastern half of Libya to be an autonomous state called Barqa. The movement is backed by some militias and local tribes.

In Egypt, an alliance of Islamic groups called anti-coup alliance has finally made its widely-expected announcement about the constitutional referendum slated for January. The alliance was formed following the July\'s ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi --- a move which it sees as a military coup. In its long-awaited announcement, the alliance said it had weighed the option of rallying for a No-vote, but finally decided to go for a boycott. An Israeli Defense Ministry official said that the initial approval for new buildings was given several months ago and added that the latest announcement was just a formality. The Israeli anti-settlement group Peace Now criticized Israel\\\'s latest move, saying Tel Aviv had the option of suspending settlement plans and giving the so-called peace talks a chance, but instead chose to push ahead with the expansion of settlements.
