Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has described the flood disaster in Pakistan as the \\\"most urgent\\\" issue of the Muslim world.
Addressing crowds of worshippers at Tehran University after Eid al-Fitr prayers on Friday, Ayatollah Khamenei expressed deep sorrow over the catastrophic floods in Pakistan and the lingering humanitarian crisis it has brought to the country.
Iran has so far sent more than 400 tons of humanitarian aid including tents, blankets, food and medicine to Pakistan, and has also announced its readiness to play an active role in the reconstruction of the country\\\'s flood-ravaged regions.
Ayatollah Khamenei said the measures taken so far to relieve the disaster-hit Pakistanis was far from enough and appealed to all Muslims across the globe to help their brothers in Pakistan.
\\\"The Iranian nation and government, other Muslim nations and governments, and Islamic societies including the Organization of the Islamic Conference and Muslims communities in any corner of the world [must] rush to help the Pakistani nation and government and meet the various needs of the flood victims in Pakistan,\\\" the Leader said.
The international community has also pleaded for a boost in global relief efforts to help some 800,000 Pakistanis stranded in areas only accessible by air in the aftermath of the country\\\'s worst-ever natural disaster.
The floods washed through one-fifth of Pakistan in August, leaving at least 1,760 people dead and affecting at least another 17 million.
Ayatollah Khamenei further warned about efforts by some powers to take advantage of the political unrest and security gap in the violence-wracked country.
\\\"Some are seeking to turn Pakistan into their military base,\\\" the Leader cautioned, expressing hope that Islamabad would resolve the predicament by fulfilling its obligations.

Iran to build system similar to S-300
Iran says the construction of a missile defense system similar to the sophisticated Russian S-300 anti-aircraft system is still on the country's agenda.
Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi told reporters on Wednesday that Iran still plans to construct the system.
His remarks come after Moscow decided to suspend a much-delayed deal to deliver the system to Iran.
"A decision has been taken not to supply the S-300 to Iran, they undoubtedly fall under sanctions," chief of the Russian General Staff, Gen. Nikolai Makarov said on Wednesday.
"The authorities decided to suspend the process of supplies," ITAR-TASS News Agency quoted Makarov as saying.
Under a contract signed in 2005, Russia was required to provide Iran with at least five S-300 air-defense systems. However, Moscow's continuous delays in delivering the defense system drew criticism from Tehran on several occasions.
Following the adoption of Resolution 1929 by UN Security Council (UNSC) against Iran, Russian authorities began making conflicting statements about how the new sanctions would affect the contract.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said in June that Moscow would "freeze the delivery of the S-300 missiles" to Iran as it runs counter to the new round of UN Security Council sanctions on the country.
Putin's remarks came as Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had earlier said UN sanctions would not affect the S-300 contract with Iran, as these missiles are "defensive weapons" and do not fall under the terms of the sanctions.
Iran has been trying to obtain the sophisticated defense system to improve its deterrence power in reaction to Israeli war rhetoric.
Experts believe the S-300 missile defense system can shield Iranian nuclear sites from any Israeli airstrike.

Iran to unveil new submarines, frigates
Commander of the Iranian Army Major General Ataollah Salehi says the country will soon unveil new generations of destroyers, frigates and submarines.
Iran will soon unveil and launch the second generation of Jamaran destroyers, Sina class frigates as well as a new generation of submarines, Salehi said Wednesday.
He made the remarks on the sidelines of a ceremony commemorating the 1980-1988 Iraqi-imposed war on Iran.
Salehi warned against any act of aggression on the country's territory and said Iran could repel any attack due to its deterrent powers.
"The enemy should beware that if our country is attacked we will not allow them to leave the region safely," the Iranian commander added.
Jamaran -- a multi-purpose warship that blends anti-submarine capabilities with defense systems against surface and air attacks -- became operational earlier this year.
Iran has so far launched different classes of advanced submarines including Qaem, Nahang and Ghadir.

“We have been attacked while in international waters. That means the Israelis have behaved like pirates … The moment they start to steer this ship towards Israel, we have also been kidnapped. The whole action is illegal.”—Henning Mankell, aboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla
Eastern Mediterranean, Monday, May 31st, 2010, 4.30am: Israeli commandos, boarding from sea and air, attack the six boats of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla as it sails through international waters bringing humanitarian relief to the beleaguered Palestinians of Gaza. Within minutes, nine peace activists are dead, shot by the Israelis. Scores of others are injured. The 700 people on board the ships are arrested before being transported to detention centers in Israel and then deported.
Within hours, outrage at Israel’s action echoes around the world. Spontaneous demonstrations in Europe, the United States, Turkey, and Gaza itself denounce the attack. Turkey’s prime minister describes it as a “bloody massacre” and “state terrorism.” Lebanon’s prime minister calls it “a dangerous and crazy step that will exacerbate tensions in the region.”
In these pages, a range of activists, journalists, and analysts piece together the events that occurred that May night, unpicking their meanings for Israel’s illegal, three-year-long blockade of Gaza and the decades-long Israel/Palestine conflict more generally. Mixing together first-hand testimony, documentary record, and illustration, with hard-headed analysis and historical overview, Midnight on the Mavi Marmara reveals why the attack on Gaza Freedom Flotilla may just turn out to be Israels Selma, Alabama: the beginning of the end for an apartheid Palestine.

A related story from LA Times: How businesses coax shoppers into buying.
http://www.latimes.com/health/la-he-shopping-psychology-20101122,0,1283284,full.story
This is a good summary of the tactics that businesses use to coax shoppers into spending. The article also illuminates how the ideology of 'choice' can be illusionary. I may think that I am buying this particular item out of my personal, independent choice, but in reality that choice or preference is conditioned by a number of stimuli, both within the store and from outside (ads, culture, media).
An important question that Raj Patel raises in the full speech is to what extent conscious buying can really help solve the problems of global economy, social justice, and the environment. Raj Patel's full speech:

British government mouthpiece BBC or British Broadcasting Corporation is put under the eye of media analysts over its coverage of the siege on Gaza.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the principal public service broadcaster in the United Kingdom, headquartered in the Broadcasting House in the City of Westminster, London.[1] It is the largest broadcaster in the world, with about 23,000 staff.[2][3][4] Its global headquarters are located in London, and its main responsibility is to provide public service broadcasting in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and Isle of Man. The BBC is an autonomous public service broadcaster[4] that operates under a Royal Charter.[5] Within the United Kingdom its work is funded principally by an annual television licence fee,[6] which is charged to all United Kingdom households, companies and organisations using any type of equipment to record and/or receive live television broadcasts;[7] the level of the fee is set annually by the British Government and agreed by Parliament.[8]
The Gaza War was a three-week armed conflict that took place in the Gaza Strip and Southern Israel during the winter of 2008--2009. In an escalation of the ongoing conflict, Israel responded to Hamas "Operation Oil Stain" rocket fire[36] with military force in an action titled "Operation Cast Lead". Israel opened the attack with a surprise air strike against the Gaza Strip on December 27, 2008.[37] Israel's stated aim was to stop rocket fire[38] from and arms import into the territory.[39][40] Israeli forces attacked military targets, police stations, and Hamas government buildings in the opening assault.[41]

Japan is struggling to regain control over the overheated reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant, after a series of blasts and fires. The government's most-senior spokesman said cooling reactor number 3 is now the top priority because it's posing the biggest danger. Military helicopters are currently dropping seawater onto the stricken reactors in the latest bid to avert nuclear meltdown... While other aircraft are monitoring the amount of radiation. If levels get too high for the air crews, trucks with water cannons will be deployed to try and get the temperature of troubled reactors to drop. RT's Ivor Bennett has been to the quake-hit regions to see, first-hand, how more and more people are fleeing the area - terrified by the threat of meltdown.

The NATO strike that hit a pro-democracy convoy outside of the eastern town of Brega killing at least 10 people may have been a mistake.
Although the population in the country's east is prepared to forgive the mistake, there is less sympathy is other parts of Libya.
Such incidents may have just given Muammar Gaddafi's spokespeople propaganda ammunition.

In this free Flash ActionScript 3 fla file download tutorial you can learn how to create a menu out of thin air using nothing but XML and ActionScript 3. Theres is nothing in the library, and nothing on stage. Everything you see is rendered out through code. The buttons get their roll_over, roll_out, and click states assigned through an XML for loop in Flash.
There is a lack of information online or in books about XML content management for flash, and it could be a powerful tool set for Flash CMS developers if understood.
