The United Nations is warning of a looming catastrophe in Somalia, where every third child is suffering from acute malnutrition because of drought and hunger. The countryside is barren, and thousands of nomads are crossing the country on foot to get aid in Mogadishu, the capital, as the Horn of Africa region faces its worst drought in six decades. Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow reports from Mogadishu as part of Al Jazeera's State of Somalia series.

The 10-year presence of US-led forces in Afghanistan has not benefited the children of the war-torn country and another a lost generation is growing up. Data compiled by the UN and the Afghan government shows that 55 percent of Afghanistan\'s children have permanent damage to their brains and bodies due to poor nutrition in the crucial first two years of life. The report says chronic malnutrition is particularly widespread and persistent, while one in four children suffers acute malnutrition in Afghanistan. A recent UN study says that even a minimally healthy diet is beyond the reach of the majority of Afghans, and in some provinces, only one in five could afford regular balanced meals.

Norway\'s huge sovereign wealth fund has blacklisted two Israeli firms involved in the construction of settlements in East Jerusalem al-Quds. The sanctioned companies are Africa Israel Investments, which is an Israeli real-estate developer, and its construction subsidiary, Danya Cebus. The world\'s biggest wealth fund has slammed their construction activities as a contribution to serious violation of individual rights in the occupied territories. The move is the renewal of a three-year ban on investment in these firms. It was repealed by the Government Pension Fund of Norway in August last year. Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. Recently, the European Union asked Tel Aviv not to announce new settlement constructions. It said such an act would be an acute threat to the progress of the so-called peace talks between the Palestinian Authority and Israelis.

Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has passed away at the age of 82 due to heart condition. Ayatollah Rafsanjani was admitted to a hospital in northern Tehran on Sunday after having an acute heart attack. Born on August 25, 1934, the influential Iranian politician and writer was the fourth president of the Islamic Republic, serving from 1989 to 1997. Rafsanjani was the head of the Assembly of Experts from 2007 to 2011. The influential cleric was elected chairman of the Iranian parliament in 1980 and served until 1989. He assumed office as the Chairman of the Expediency Council in 1989. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani attended the hospital where Ayatollah Rafsanjani was hospitalized, undergoing treatment. Head of Tehran’s Shohada Hospital has declared heart arrest as the cause of Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani’s passing away. Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani was among the main aides to late founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini. He played an influential role both during anti-Shah struggles before the victory of the Islamic Revolution and afterwards through various stages of the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Rafsanjani was also a key figure during the eight years of Iraq’s imposed war on Iran (1980-88), serving as substitute to commander-in-chief of the armed forces. According to IRNA news agency, the funeral for Ayatollah Hashemi Rafsanjani will be held in Tehran on Tuesday.
