A group of men with knives and sticks attacked a Gezi Park forum in the late hours of July 11, in the neighborhood of the conservative Istanbul district Fatih. The group was commemorating the death of the latest victim of the police crackdown on protesters. 19-year-old Ali Ismail Korkmaz died of his wounds in hospital on Wednesday. He was badly beaten by unidentified people in plane clothes during protests on June 2. It is widely believed the attackers were wither plain-clothes police or protested by police.

NATO is holding one of its largest post-Cold War military drills near Russia\'s borders. Poland and the Baltic states are hosting the war games launched on Saturday. Code-named \"Steadfast Jazz\", the exercises involve some SIX thousand troops from NATO as well as non-member states such as Finland, Sweden and Ukraine. Around half of them will participate in live exercise training, which will involve armor, aircraft and naval vehicles. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the week-long war games are designed to prepare forces to defend any ally from an unidentified foreign invader. NATO\'s recent actions have raised tensions in the region. Russia has already expressed concerns over NATO\'s missile and radar deployments in Eastern Europe calling them threats to its security.

Thousands of Yemenis have held demonstrations over the deteriorating security situation in the country. In Sana\'a, huge crowds took to the streets after Friday Prayers. The protesters criticized the government for failing to protect the nation from persistent attacks and targeted assassinations. A demonstration was also held in the western city of Saada. Yemen has been hit by a wave of shootings and assassination attempts on political and security officials over the past year. Over 90 army officers and security officials have been assassinated by unidentified gunmen in the past seven months. Earlier this month, an attack on a hospital inside the country\'s defense ministry left scores of people dead and wounded. In addition, many foreign journalists and diplomats have been kidnapped and held for ransom by gunmen.

An anti-government protester has been killed and three others injured in a gun attack in Thailand. Jannat al-Baqi is the oldest and the first Islamic cemetery located in the city of Medina. Both Sunnis and Shias have protested against the demolition and desecration of this holy heritage site.
