A senior Russian lawmaker says US attempts to influence the situation in Ukraine are a desire to take revenge for Washington\'s defeat in Syria. Alexei Pushkov says US interference in Ukraine is to show that the West is still the force that determines the course of events in global affairs. He emphasized that the West\'s meddling in the events in Ukraine suggests that the country is treated as a semi-colony. Pushkov also says the direct involvement of the EU and the US in Ukraine is a new form of political aggression. Tensions between Ukraine, Europe and Russia are running high over Kiev\'s decision to suddenly scrap plans to sign a deal with the European Union. Russia is now accusing the Europeans of blackmailing Kiev to sign an association agreement with the EU. The Russian president says the E-U is using threats and pressure to shift Ukraine out of Russia\'s orbit. Vladimir Putin has also criticized the E-U for supporting protests against scrapping the deal. Putin made the comments shortly after the E-U accused Kiev of bowing to Russian pressure. On Thursday, Ukraine suspended signing the association agreement with Europe, citing economic concerns and trade issues with Russia. The decision has sparked protests in Kiev. Demonstrators have taken to the streets to oppose the government move, with the opposition leaders joining the rallies.

Ukraine has been hit with a wave of political unrest since late November when President Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign a trade pact with the European Union. The Russian parliament, the State Duma, in a non-binding statement on Tuesday urged the West to \"stop mounting external pressure on the politics of a country that is brotherly to us.\" The lower house of parliament also called on Ukrainian opposition forces to \"stop illegal actions\" over the political crisis.

Ukraine\'s political crisis has dominated the summit between the European Union and Russia, with Russian President Vladimir Putin assuring Ukrainians that Moscow would honor a loan deal whatever government emerges in Kiev. Despite that, trade talks between the EU and former soviet states continue to create tensions. The EU blames pressure from Moscow for the breakdown in trade negotiations between the EU and Ukraine. The EU also claims this has led to the current crisis in Ukraine. The EU and Russia have been negotiating a \'new basic agreement\', as it is called, for years.
