[17 Oct 2012] UN -Arab league envoy to Syria visits Lebanon - English

The UN-Arab League Special Envoy for Syria has arrived in Damascus as part of a tour aimed at garnering support for proposed peace talks. Lakhdar Brahimi was welcomed by Syrian deputy foreign minister Faisal Moqdad upon his arrival. Brahimi traveled to several countries in the Middle and Near East including Iran to prepare the grounds for the Geneva Two conference. The talks are aimed at ending Syria\'s two-and-a-half-year unrest. This is Brahimi\'s first visit to Syria since December.

The Syrian leader has met with the UN-Arab League Special Envoy for Syria, on the third day of his visit to the country. The meeting was aimed at paving the way for the Geneva-2 conference on Syria.

The UN, Arab League special envoy for Syria is in Lebanon for talks with high-ranking Lebanese officials. Lebanon is said to have paid the heaviest price so far as a result of the war in neighboring Syria and is now hoping that the Geneva 2 Conference will be held soon to pave the way for a political solution to the crisis.

The United Nations and Arab League special envoy to Syria say the Syrian crisis has become extremely dangerous for the the region and beyond. Addressing a news conference in Iraq, Brahimi said there\'s a new attempt to solve the Syrian crisis in the Geneva 2 peace conference. His comments come as the United States and Russia, who support opposing sides in the conflict, have been trying for months to bring the Damascus government and the divided opposition to the table for a peace conference. But with the war deadlocked, the opposition has shown no interest in compromise, forcing the meeting to be repeatedly postponed.

This comes as Syria's president Basher Assad has appointed a new prime minister and tasked him with the formation of a new government is Syria despite a continuous western pressure on hi government. Syria's security and political crisis carries on despite the UN's efforts to bring about a peaceful political solution.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has launched a new effort to include Iran in the upcoming Syria peace talks in Geneva. Ban Ki-moon said that Iran needs to contribute to peace in Syria along with others in the region. He also called the division about Iranian participation unfortunate. The remarks came two days after the UN-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, released a list of participants for the January talks. Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, India, and Indonesia are some of the countries invited to the conference. Brahimi said that Iran is not on the list because of US opposition. Russia, which insists on Iran\\\'s participation, has criticized the US position, calling it illogical. The UN chief, however, has expressed hope that the question of Iran\\\'s participation can be resolved soon.

UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could play a constructive role in a future transition in his country. Brahimi is in Damascus on the latest leg of a regional tour to rally support for the upcoming Geneva talks. Representatives from the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition will resume meetings in February. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has confirmed the February talks. The confirmation comes as the two sides prepare to wrap up the Geneva negotiations on Friday which were mediated by UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. The two sides remained deadlocked on Thursday over the issue of terrorism in Syria. They blame each other for the ongoing violence.
