Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has praised the takeover of the US Embassy in Tehran by Iranian students in 1979. Gaza Freedom Flotilla came under fire early on Monday by Israeli navy forces in international waters more than 150km (90 miles) off the coast of Gaza. The six-ship aid fleet was soon stormed by commandos descending from helicopters. At least 20 people were killed in the takeover of the Gaza aid convoy, al-Aqsa TV channel reported, saying that more than 50 people, including leader of the Palestinian Islamic Movement Sheikh Raed Salah, were wounded in the attack. The news trickled through the Israeli military censorship which has sought to block the reporting of any information about the casualties. A report on the Israeli radio said the censorship was aimed at covering up the number of casualties brought to Israeli hospitals for treatment. Meanwhile, Israeli Trade and Industry Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer expressed regret for the deaths aboard the Gaza aid ships. "The images are certainly not pleasant. I can only voice regret at all the fatalities," he told Israel's Army Radio. The comments come as the first official acknowledgement by Tel Aviv that the attack had turned fatal. Israel had initially declined to comment on the reports of casualties from the takeover of the aid ships.

It has been 30 years since the US undertook Operation Eagle Claw - a failed military mission to rescue 52 diplomats and embassy staff taken hostage in Iran. About 90 commandoes, eight helicopters and six aircraft landed in the Iranian desert on the first stage of the mission, but an accident resulted in the deaths of eight soldiers and it was called off. The hostage crisis lasted for another year after "divine intervention", as some Iranians say, stopped Eagle Claw. The anniversary comes amid rising tensions between the US and Iran. Al Jazeera Alireza Ronaghi reports from Tehran.

Anti-Mubarak protests continue in Egypt

A group of young Venezuelan-Egyptians took over the Egyptian embassy in solidarity with the widespread protests that have swept the Middle Eastern country in recent days and reportedly left after speaking with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro. Although the protest was at first peaceful, it turned violent when the security guards of the embassy tried to intervene. When reached for comment, they embassy officials refused to talk to Press TV. President Hugo Chavez also said on the state TV, quote, "“They wanted to protest, but they shouldn't have done that because we are obliged to protect all of the embassies, which are sovereign territory.” After a quick intervention of Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicolas Maduro, demonstrators agreed to leave the embassy. Nevertheless they said they will organize more actions until President Hosni Mubarak leaves Egypt.

As the situation in cities throughout Egypt continues to intensify, Egyptian-Americans are speaking up with deep emotions and frustrations about the problems of the Mubarak government. We urge the Egyptian authorities to allow peaceful protests and to reverse unprecedented steps it has taken to cut off communications. More protests are scheduled throughout New York and the rest of the US in the coming days. Protesters say they'll continue to mobilize as long as their brothers and sisters in Egypt need them to.

Demonstrations took place around the country Friday in support of the mass protests in Egypt this week. At the National Press Club in Washington, Egyptian leaders gathered to ask the White House to stand with the Egyptian people in their demands to the nation's government. The United States has expressed its firm support for the Mubarak regime and although vague expressions of concern for the freedoms of the Egyptian people have been made, an outright denunciation of Hosni Mubarak is yet to be heard. Dr. Samia Harris of the Alliance of Egyptian Americans had this message for Vice President Joe Biden in response to his affirmation of the Mubarak government. Egyptian rights activist Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim called the events in Egypt as a revolution, and in response to a question about the impact of revolution on the United States' so-called War on Terror, he had this to say: After the press conference, demonstrators rallied in front of the White House to make their demands known. These include withdrawing military and economic aid from Egypt, which is the second highest recipient of foreign aid from the U.S. after Israel, at an annual $2 billion. Though the world's eye is currently transfixed on Egypt, these demonstrators turn to the White House in demanding an end of U.S. support for the Mubarak regime.

According to Israeli daily Ha'aretz, the Israeli occupation confiscated Palestinian lands northeast of the Jordan valley and gave it to Kibbutz Merav, inhabited by Israeli settlers. The Israeli occupation is systematically confiscating land and expelling Palestinians in the Jordan Valley, known as al-Aghwar. The route of Israel's apartheid wall was altered to secure the takeover of 375 acres Palestinian lands. This annexation have come during the same week as Israel plans to invite tenders for the construction of 2,230 settlement units in East Jerusalem al-Quds and other parts of the West Bank. The Palestinian Authority has condemned these Israeli plans. According to experts, a large part of the occupied land belongs to Palestinians who were driven out of the land by the Israeli occupation forces during the 1967 war. These Palestinians are considered "absentee" by Israel and under the Israeli so-called Absentee Property Law, their lands can be used for settlement activities. Thousands of acres of privately-owned Palestinian lands were given to Israeli settlers in the Jordan Valley in the 1960s and 1970s, and the confiscation of Palestinian land in the area is still ongoing by the Israeli occupation, regardless of International laws and resolutions. In most cases, Israel confiscates lands near illegally-built settlements in the West Bank under the pretext of security reasons, but in this case, they have officially annexed these occupied lands.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei says Iranian youths were more than three decades ahead of their time when they called the former US Embassy in Tehran the den of espionage. The Leader was addressing a group of school and university students on the occasion of the Student Day which coincides with the takeover of the former US Embassy in Tehran by revolutionary students on November 4, 1979. “On that day, our youths named the US Embassy the \'den of espionage’ and today, after over three decades, US embassies in the European countries, which are American allies, are called nest of espionage,” said the Leader on Sunday, adding, “This shows that our youths were over 30 years ahead of the world calendar.” “The arrogant approach taken by the US has caused nations to distrust and loathe it. Moreover, experience has shown that any nation and government that trusts the US will be harmed, even if they are friends of the US,” the Leader noted. Ayatollah Khamenei also pointed to the ongoing nuclear negotiations between Iran and the UN Security Council\'s permanent members - Russia, China, France, the US and UK - plus Germany and defended the Iranian negotiating team against criticism. The Leader warned that no one should undermine or insult the negotiating team or label them as being inclined toward reaching a compromise over Iran\'s nuclear energy program. Ayatollah Khamenei stated that the negotiations will not harm the Iranian nation, but will be an experience for the nation, which will increase their analysis and thinking capacity, much like the experience of temporary suspension of uranium enrichment in 2003-2004. The Leader once again voiced skepticism about US intentions, saying, “A smiling enemy should not be trusted.” “I’m not optimistic about the ongoing negotiations because it is not known whether the nation will achieve its desired results. However, we believe there is no harm in such an experience provided that the nation is vigilant and knows what is going on,” said Ayatollah Khamenei. The Leader added, “The nuclear issue is merely a pretext and if, hypothetically, this issue is resolved with us backing down, they will find tens of other pretexts such as [Iran\'s] missile achievements, the Iranian nation’s opposition to the Zionist regime [of Israel], and the Islamic Republic’s support for the Resistance [Movement] to continue enmity with [our] beloved Iran,” Ayatollah Khamenei said. The Leader advised Iranian officials to carefully observe the statements and actions of the other side of the negotiations because “on the one hand, they smile and express willingness for dialogue, but on the other hand, they immediately say ‘all options are on the table.’”
