Foreign-backed militants continue their attacks on residential areas in Syria. The insurgent shelling of the Meridian district of the northern city of Aleppo killed several civilians on Wednesday. They also captured the area of Adra, northeast of the capital Damascus. More than 20 civilians, mostly Alawites, are said to have been killed in the militant attack there. This is while, Kurdish People\'s Protection Units have recaptured the north-eastern village of Tweineh, near al-Hasakah city, following clashes with militants of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front. In recent days, some regional and international leaders have warned of growing extremism in Syria. This, as insurgents fighting the Syrian government enjoy the logistical and financial supports of Western and some regional Arab countries.

Israeli forces demolished 30 Palestinian structures including nearly a dozen in residential areas in the occupied Jordan Valley on Tuesday, displacing 41 people, 24 of which are children.

Mortar shells have hit several residential areas in the Syrian city of Aleppo causing casualties. Our correspondent in Syria says at least five civilians were killed and some others injures in Slemania, Jamilia and Hamdania neighborhoods. There has been no claim of responsibility. But insurgents have in the past repeatedly targeted civilian areas with rockets to pressure the government. Syrian forces are engaged in fierce battles with militants across the country.

Iran Urges Int'l Community to Halt Israeli Crimes TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hassan Qashqavi called on the United Nations and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) to take immediate measures to bring an end to Israel's brutal attacks in the Gaza Strip. About 220 Palestinians were killed across the Gaza Strip on Saturday in massive air strikes carried out by the Zionist regime. This brutal and inhumane strike brings more shame upon Israel, MNA quoted Qashqavi as saying on Saturday. "Although this crime has apparently been committed to gain more votes in the election campaigns of the occupiers of the occupied territories, it also provides firm evidence that the Zionist regime's aggressive approach is continuing." He also criticized the members of the international community for their silence in the face of the disastrous situation in Gaza. "These crimes are the result of the painful silence of the international community in the response to the inhumane siege of oppressed men, women, and children in the Gaza Strip." The Foreign Ministry spokesman addressed the world bodies and so-called upholders of human rights, saying, "The important question in this issue is: Shouldn't attacking residential areas and massacring dozens of men, women, and children in the streets… cause any reaction or human feelings to arise, and shouldn't this be considered… a serious human rights issue?" Qashqavi also expressed his condolences to the Palestinians and emphasized that the Iranian nation and government strongly supports the oppressed Palestinian nation in their struggle against the Zionist regime.

Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Sayyed Ali Khamenei was born in Mashad, the holiest city, in the north-eastern province of Khorasan, in 1939. Both his parents belonged to clergy\'s families and spent the year 1964, he achieved the highest degrees in his theological studies at the Theological Academy of Qum but continued his studies at the Theological Academy at Mashad up to the age of twenty-nine. Political Activities before Victory of The Islamic Revolution During the rule of the deposed shah, Ay. Khamenei was a favourite pupil of Imam Khomeini, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, he was also considered to be one of the most eminent and dependable leaders of the movement of the Iranian Muslims, this movement entered a new phase in 1962 after Imam Khomini`s pronouncements against the Shah regime. Responsibilities After the Victory In the course of these struggles, Ay. Khamenei was arrested many times and spent three years in prison between 1964 and 1978. In 1978, upon return from exile and the height of the revolutionary of the Iranian Muslims, he, together with a few close associates led the struggle of the people in Khorasan. Later, in the same year when Leader of the Revolution was temporarily in Paris, he was selected as a member of the government of the Islamic Republic of IRAN. He was entrusted with the responsibility of representing the Revolutionary Council in the Army as well as Deputy for Revolutionary Affairs at the National Ministry of Defence and some time later. He was appointed to the post of the Revolutionary guards. At about this time, Imam Khomeini chose him to lead the Friday congregational Prayers in Tehran and in 1980 he was elected to Islamic Consultative Assembly by the people of Tehran. After the formation of the Supreme Council of Defence, Ay. Khamenei joined it as the representative of Imam Khomeini. Ay. Khamenei was one of the founding members of the Islamic Republic Party in IRAN and held the post of the Secretary-General of the Party. Ay. Khamenei was the victim of an assassination attempt on 27th June 1981. having delivered an important speech at the consultative assembly, which ended in the dismissal of Bani-Sader from the Presidency of IRAN, he was addressing the faithful at poor residential area in Tehran, after leading the congregational prayer, when a time-bomb exploded nearby which injured him in the hand, chest and face. He was immediately transferred to a hospital by the deboted people of Tehran and he miraculously survived; his right hand, however, is not still functioning properly. Presidency In the 1981, following the martyrdom of the second President of the Islamic republic of Iran, he becomes a candidate and, in September of the same year, he was elected the Third President of the Islamic Republic of Iran with %95 of the votes cast in his favour by the Iranian people (the total number of votes was 16,847,717). He was reelected as president in 1985 for a second four-year term. Ay. Khamenei heads the Supreme Council of Defence and the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution. Since the beginning of the imposed war, he has often visited various war fronts and has often inspected the frontline in order to help remove any shortcoming or to advise on organizational matters. Leadership In 4th June 1989, One day after demise of Imam Khomeimi, Assembly of Experts closed Ayatollah Khamenei to lead the Islamic Revolution of IRAN.Since 1994, Ayatollah Khamenei has been introduced as the Religious authority in religious authority for Shi`ait people in the world by the Ulama from different countries. Family Mr. Khamenei is married and has six children. Works & Books He has a good command of the Arabic and Turkish and English language and, in addition to writing, he is a good judge of literary and poetic works. He has translated and written numerous books on Islam and history. His translations include \" Future of the Islamic lands,\" \" A Thdictment against the Western Civilization,\" and \" Imam Hassan`s Peace Treaty.\" From among his writings, one may mention: \" The Role of Muslims in the Independence struggle of India.\" General Pattern of Islamic Thought in the Quran,\" The Question of Patience,\" On the Inner Depth of prayers,\" \"Understanding Islam properly,\" \"Imam Al-Sadegh`s Life,\" and a collection of lectures on the question of Imamate. He was also a co-writer of the famous pamphlet \" Our Positions,\" which helped the political, social and philosophical advancement of Islamic Republic Party. Other contributors were martyred Ayatollah Beheshti, martyred Hojjatol-Eslam Bahonar and Hojjatol-Eslam Hashemi Rafsanjani.

[28 May 2012] \'West loses credibility on Syria\' - English Syria slams the wording of a United Nations Security Council statement on the recent massacre of civilians in the central town of Houla. Ja\'afari said the 15-nation council misinterpreted the words of the head of the UN mission in Syria, General Robert Mood. He was referring to a part in the statement that condemned the Syrian government for the artillery and tank shelling of a residential neighborhood in Houla. Ja\'afari said it was an interpretation of Western states such as Germany and the UK. He added that General Mood had said it was unclear how the mass killings had taken place and that the events needed to be investigated. The Security Council released the statement after an emergency session to discuss the Houla killings. Over one-hundred people were killed and three-hundred others wounded in the town on Friday.

Large parts of Syria have plunged into darkness after a huge blast targeted the main gas pipeline feeding electricity stations south of the country. The explosion caused massive but partial power outages in all Syrian governorates. The Electricity Ministry says technicians and workers are trying to fix the problem. Meanwhile, in the capital Damascus, mortar shells fired by foreign-backed insurgents killed at least two civilians. In another attack, a booby-trapped car went off near an army checkpoint at the entrance of the Dummar residential area in Damascus. The sound of an explosion was also heard near the main church in the area.

Syrian army units in a major push against insurgents across the country. Troops have carried out large-scale operations in several towns and cities. The mop-up operations covered vast areas in the Idlib and Aleppo countryside and the cities of Dara\'a, Homs and Dayr al-zawr. The Syrian army says scores of foreign-backed militants including Saudi and Tunisian nationals were killed during the offensives. It also adds that a large number of heavy weapons were seized from militant hideouts. Meanwhile, mortar attacks have left over a dozen civilians injured in residential areas in Damascus. The government has blamed the insurgents for the mortar shells.

Another day of bloodshed in Iraq. At least 22 people are killed in mortar attacks on a town south of the capital Baghdad. Five mortar rounds hit a residential area, a market and a parking lot in the town of Musayyib. Over 50 people were also injured there. The town, which is close to the Shia-dominated city of Hillah, had been a former stronghold of insurgents. A bomb attack in the same town on Tuesday claimed five lives. Iraq has been witnessing a surge in attacks by al-Qaeda-linked militants for more than six months now. Reports say over 15-hundred civilians and security forces have been killed since the beginning of this year. That\\\'s in addition to 68-hundred people who lost their lives there last year.

The Boeing 7-47 aircraft was reportedly carrying just four crew members, all of whom lost their lives when it went down. The plane crashed into residential buildings in a village 25 kilometers from Bishkek during landing approach. Emergency workers were dispatched to the crash site immediately to recover bodies and help with relief operations. Kyrgyz officials said crash happened due to QUOTE pilot error. All flights to and from Kyrgyzstan\'s Manas International Airport have been suspended. The plane coming from Hong-Kong belonged to a Turkish company. Bahraini forces also fired tear gas at a residential building in Sanabis village on the outskirts of the capital Manama. The biggest rally was held in the village of Diraz. Earlier, protests were held on Sitra Island as well as the town of A\'ali and Barbar village. Iraqi Vice President Nouri al-Maliki has condemned the executions as a shameful act and heinous crime. He said Manama is practicing execution as a form of authoritarian behavior and revenge against peaceful people. The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah has also slammed the executions, warning that they would undermine any chance for a political solution in Bahrain.
