Iran\'s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman has condemned a report by the UN special Human Rights Rapporteur on the country\'s rights situation as politicized and biased.
Marzieh Afkham said such reports should not be used as a criterion to judge the human rights situation in Iran. Afkham was reacting to the latest report by the UN Rapporteur Ahmad Shahid which accused Tehran of failing to make significant improvements on the human rights front. The Iranian foreign ministry spokeswoman said the report lacks legitimacy, as it is based on information provided by terrorist groups. Afkham also described Iran as the anchor of stability and religious democracy in a region which suffers from extremism and terrorism.

The UN Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, who was on an official visit to India from March 19 to 30 last year, has presented his findings in a report and proposed recommendations to ensure better protection of the right to life in India. The Special Rapporteur, Christof Heyns, has expressed serious concern over the alarming level of extrajudicial executions in India. The report specially mentions the excessive use of force against peaceful demonstrators in Indian-control Kashmir, fake encounters by government forces, unmarked mass graves, and unbridled powers given to security forces in the region.

UN human rights experts express serious concern about US drone attacks resulting in civilian casualties in Yemen.
The UN special rapporteur on extra-judicial, summary or arbitrary executions says Yemen cannot accept violations of people\\\'s right to life. This, as the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture also says that deadly attacks on illegitimate targets amount to cruel or degrading treatment. According to the world body, 16 civilians were killed when two separate wedding processions were targeted by US drones in Yemen on December 12. The UN says the victims were mistakenly identified as al-Qaeda members. The US think tank, New America Foundation says about a hundred drone strikes have killed some 9-hundred people in Yemen since 2002.

UN official Enough evidence to prosecute Rumsfeld - English. Monday, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak told CNN's Rick Sanchez that the US has an "obligation" to investigate whether Bush administration officials ordered torture, adding that he believes that there is already enough evidence to prosecute former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
"We have clear evidence," he said. "In our report that we sent to the United Nat More..ions, we made it clear that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld clearly authorized torture methods and he was told at that time by Alberto Mora, the legal council of the Navy, 'Mr. Secretary, what you are actual ordering here amounts to torture.' So, there we have the clear evidence that Mr. Rumsfeld knew what he was doing but, nevertheless, he ordered torture."
Asked during an interview with Germany's ZDF television on Jan. 20, Nowak said: "I think the evidence is on the table."
At issue, however, is whether "American law will recognize these forms of torture."
A bipartisan Senate report released last month found Rumsfeld and other top administration officials responsible for abuse of Guantanamo detainees in US custody.
It said Rumsfeld authorized harsh interrogation techniques on December 2, 2002 at the Guantanamo prison, although he ruled them out a month later.
The coercive measures were based on a document signed by Bush in February, 2002.

A lawyer for a nine-eleven suspect, who\'s jailed in the US Guantanamo prison, criticizes his limitations in even talking about the torture of his client.
James Connell says the Guantanamo court has barred him from reading out his client\'s personal account of his alleged abuse. He says this hampers his ability to put up a strong defense. To add insult to the injury, Connell said he was also prevented to send the document to a third party such as the U-N\'s special rapporteur on torture. The lawyer insisted that the treatment violated the U-N Convention Against Torture. Other lawyers have also complained about the issue, saying it\'s important to discuss torture claims because all their five defendants face the death penalty if convicted. Connell has also revealed that his client suffered a head injury apparently during an interrogation by the C-I-A in 2006.

A UN envoy says the deadly violence against a Muslim minority in Myanmar poses a serious threat to the country\\\'s economic and political reforms.
The U-N special rapporteur on the human rights situation in Myanmar has warned against anti-Muslim sentiments in the Southeast Asian nation. Tomas Ojea Quintana says Myanmar\\\'s military junta needs to do more to protect the vulnerable community. He says the underlying issue of discrimination against Muslims and particularly Rohingyas remains unaddressed. Hundreds of Rohingyas have been killed in sectarian violence in the western Rakhine state since last year. The continuing violence and rights abuses have forced hundreds of thousands to flee a country that does not even accept them as legitimate citizens.
