Iran, Algeria vow to enhance ties Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stressed the importance of taking practical steps to bolster ties with Algeria in line with the interests of both countries. Ahmadinejad, who left Tehran for New York to attend the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly, arrived in Algiers on Saturday in the second leg of his three-nation tour. In a meeting with his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the two presidents exchanged views on promoting mutual relations as well as the key issues of the Muslim world including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bouteflika pointed to Iran's position in the Middle East and the Muslim world and said Algiers is resolute to expand relations with Tehran. He added that the expansion of ties between Iran and Algeria would be beneficial for Muslim countries. Ahmadinejad's visit to Algeria comes after his trip to Damascus and meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad earlier in the day. The Iranian president is slated to attend the UN General Assembly and the Millennium Development Goals summit to be attended by 140 heads of states in the United States. In a key speech from National Defense University in Washington, U-S President Barack Obama defended assassination drone strikes on Muslim countries as a just war. He outlined a newer standard of deadly drone strikes being carried out in several Muslim countries including Yemen and Pakistan. Obama stayed persistent on a commitment to the so called war on terror that began under former president George W Bush. The United States is under international pressure to halt its deadly drone strikes. But U-S president Barack Obama defied the pressure and defended the drone attacks. Obama said his administration\'s policy of targeted killings by drones is legal, effective and just. Our correspondent in Washington Colin Cambel has the story.

Following several days of mass protests that had gripped the country on a national level, the Egyptian army has ousted the country\'s first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in a move described by the ousted president as a full military coup. That was the final decision after army\'s 48-hour ultimatum for political factions to reach an agreement came to an end. General Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, Head of Egypt\'s Armed Forces accompanied with religious authorities as well as political figures announced the decision and presented a political roadmap for the transition period. Based on the army\'s roadmap, the much disputed constitution has been suspended temporarily and Adly Mansour, the head country\'s Supreme Constitutional Court has been named as the acting president until early elections are held. Iran\'s President Hassan Rouhani has called on China to stand against what he described as the excessive demands of certain countries in nuclear talks with Tehran. President Rouhani told his Chinese counterpart over the phone that China is an important country with significant responsibilities over international issues. He said Tehran expects Beijing to play a stronger role in the efforts to solve the dispute over Iran\'s nuclear program. Rouhani says Tehran is determined to settle the issue within the frameworks of international law. Shi Jinping, for his part, praised what he described as smart steps by Iran over its nuclear program as well as its foreign policy agenda. He says a peaceful resolution of the case will only happen when the nuclear talks are based on mutual respect and the principle of equality.

Thousands of supporters of Egypt\'s ousted president Mohamed Morsi take to the streets across the country. They have marked 100 days since the violent crackdown on pro-Morsi sit-ins in the capital Cairo. On another front, interim president Adly Mansour has signed into law an anti-protest bill.

Iran\'s president says the problems in the Middle East have doubled since the creation of israel. Rouhani said enrichment is a right not banned under international law. He added that the Iran nuclear deal has created cracks in the sanctions regime. Rouhani stressed that his administration managed to neutralize a rift of unilateral and multilateral sanctions imposed on Iran. He was briefing the Iranian nation on his first one-hundredth day since he took office. The Iranian president also said the country\'s enemies that tried to spread Irano-phobia across the world are isolated more than ever.

Rouhani has told visiting Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi that terrorism and extremism put nations in the region and across the world in danger. Rouhani said all countries should now unite to fight against this danger. He said that Iran has spared no effort to avert a foreign military strike on Syria. The Iranian president said that Tehran has urged all its neighbors to help lessen the sufferings of the Syrian people in the wake of the nearly three-year-long conflict in the country.

Rouhani pointed to the recent agreement reached between Iran and the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany in Geneva and said the deal struck a heavy blow to Zionism. The Iranian president also said his government will strive to tear down what he called the wall of unfair sanctions against the nation. Elsewhere in his speech, Rouhani said Iran seeks constructive and positive interactions with other countries. He also hailed Iran for its significant role in preventing a destructive war in Syria.

Rouhani made the remark in a meeting with his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai in Tehran. He also expressed Tehran\'s concern about the tensions created by foreign forces in neighboring countries and said the security of Afghanistan must be provided by Afghan people. President Karzai praised Iran\'s cooperation with Afghanistan and urged closer economic and security ties with Tehran. Karzai has also had a separate meeting with foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif. Tehran and Kabul have announced plans to sign a long-term pact to boost cooperation and friendship between the two countries.

Egypt\'s public prosecutor orders the trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and more than 30 others on charges of espionage. A statement from the prosecutor\'s office has accused Morsi of plotting with foreign organizations to carry out terrorist attacks in the country. The toppled leader is also accused of committing acts of violence in Egypt. Local media say the other defendants include former presidential aides and Muslim Brotherhood leaders, who will be standing trial along with him. Morsi is already on trial over alleged involvement in the killings of opposition protesters. He was ousted by the military in early July, about a year after taking office as Egytp\'s first democratically-elected president.

Iranian president\'s proposal for a global campaign against violence and extremism has been approved by the United Nations. Iran\'s UN ambassador Mohammad Khazaee said the UN General Assembly approved unanimously the draft resolution put forth by Iran for \"A world against violence and extremism\" - known as WAVE. He also noted that the resolution is aimed at promoting global interactions to eradicate violence across the world. Iranian diplomats have for months been negotiating with other UN members to finalize the draft document. In his speech to the UN General Assembly earlier this year, President Rouhani said that the world should unite against violence and extremism.

Italian Foreign Minister Emma Bonino who is in Tehran on an official visit has met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. During the meeting, President Rouhani said the level of relations between Iran and Italy is below expectation and all available capacities must be used to expand it. President Rouhani added that Italy has acted as an important partner in its relations with Iran and expressed happiness about Rome\'s willingness to expand ties with Tehran. He added that cooperation between the two sides can lay the foundation of mutual trust between Iran and Europe. Emma Bonino for her part said that Italy\'s interests lie in expanding and developing ties with Iran. She added that Rome is eager to expand relations with Tehran in economic, industrial, energy, tourism and scientific fields.

Lebanon\'s President Michel Sleiman has raised hopes that a new government could soon see the light of day. Speaking to diplomats at the Presidential Palace in Beirut, Sleiman said all major obstacles had been overcome, and that he was putting the final touches on the new cabinet. He added that this weekend would be decisive. Sleiman\'s remarks are the strongest signal yet of an end to the 10-months political deadlock in Lebanon. The country has been reeling from the political turmoil since the March 2013 resignation of Prime Minister Najib Miqati. President Sleiman\'s mandate runs out on May 25.

The trial of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi over the deaths of protesters has been adjourned to March first. His trial was scheduled to be held on Wednesday. Morsi and 14 of his allies are charged with inciting the killing of demonstrators outside the presidential palace in late 20-12. Egypt\'s first democratically-elected president has been implicated in two other cases. Morsi is also due to stand before the court on February 16 on charges of espionage and on February 22 on charges of orchestrating a prison break in 20-11. The military ousted him in July, sparking deadly pro-Morsi protests across the country.

The US Secretary of State criticizes Russia for what he calls support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. John Kerry has said that with support from Moscow, Damascus stonewalled the second round of peace talks in Geneva. He added that such support would let the Syrian president continue destroying his own country. Kerry also blamed the Syrian government for the failure of the Geneva talks-- saying the government delegation refused to open up one moment of discussion during the meetings. Kerry made the remarks hours after Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem accused Washington of trying to create a very negative climate for dialog in Geneva.
