Tensions in Egypt continue to run high ahead of a referendum on a new constitution. More than 50 students have been injured in a police crackdown. some of the students are in critical condition. The violence broke out in Assiut and Minya as police fired tear gas and bird shots to disperse anti-government students. On Saturday, the army-installed government said it will confront the Muslim Brotherhood protesters with full force. It accused the group of trying to disrupt the referendum to be held later in January. Egypt has been the scene of almost daily protests since the country\'s first democratically-elected president was ousted by the military last July. Protesters demand Mohamed Morsi\'s reinstatement.

At least one Egyptian protester has been killed in an anti-government demonstration in the center of the country. Officials say the 18-year-old student was shot and killed by the security forces in the city of Deir Mawas in Minya province. The demonstration, organized by supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood, was held to commemorate Egypt\'s Student Day and denounce a decision to delay the start of the academic year. The demonstrators were also angry about the possibility that army chief Marshal Sisi may run for president. Similar demonstrations were also held in Alexandria, Monufia, Ismailiyah, Suez, and Cairo. The security forces fired tear gas and birdshot at protesters in those cities.

In Egypt, at least two people have been killed in fresh clashes between supporters and opponents of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. A 10-year-old boy was shot dead in the port city of Suez and a man was killed in the central city of Minya. Over a dozen people have also been injured. Security forces fired tear gas and plastic-coated bullets to scatter protesters near the al-Azhar University in Cairo. Morsi supporters also rallied outside el-Salam Mosque east of the capital. The protesters say they will press ahead with their calls for an end to the military rule and Morsi\'s re-instatement.
