Secular societies have gradually eroded the importance of marriage and this has been the subject of much controversy in recent times. Plans to legalize gay marriage in England and Wales is being debated in the UK Parliament. It is currently going through its two-day report stage and third reading. Amendments to the bill are also being proposed. MPs in the House of Commons will vote on a number of amendments to the gay marriage bill, including an amendment put forward by one Conservative MP who is opposed to gay marriage. The Tory MP wants civil partnerships to be extended to opposite-sex couples. But this amendment could delay the bill, increase costs and could force the government to drop the bill altogether.
