In Syria, at least two people have been killed in insurgent shelling of the city of Idlib. At least five mortar shells landed near a university in the northwestern city. One of the victims was a student and the other a passerby. At least 17 others were also injured in the attack. Mortar attacks are the hallmark of insurgents in Syria. Only on Monday, about a dozen people were killed in a mortar attack on a government stronghold in the northern city of Aleppo.

Syrian government forces have seized a large cache of drugs from foreign-backed insurgents in Idlib province. Syrian troops found the drugs in a warehouse in Idlib countryside. Several men were also arrested at the warehouse. The militants have been receiving funds and other supports from their regional backers, particularly Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Reports say Riyadh and Doha give them millions of dollars each month, and also buy them weapons from black markets around the world.

[01 May 2012] 'US bent on destruction of Middle East countries' - English A third explosion rocked Syrian city of Idlib on Monday, hours after twin bomb blasts killed more than 20 people in the northwestern city. Casualties are feared in the third blast which shook the university neighborhood in Idlib on Monday. Activists say at least 20 people were killed and dozens of others were injured in twin explosions targeting the Air Force Intelligence headquarters and the Military Intelligence buildings in Idlib earlier in day. Al-Qaeda-linked militants in Syria have killed at least 50 rival insurgents amid continued infighting among militant groups. Opposition sources say the insurgents were killed in attacks, car bombings and summary executions by militants loyal to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant or I-S-I-L. Sunday\'s deaths came on the third day of infighting that began when militants of the so-called Free Syrian Army attacked checkpoints and bases manned by the I-S-I-L. The clashes have mostly centered in the northern provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. Opposition sources say the I-S-I-L militants summarily executed thirty of their civilian and non-civilian hostages after their base was surrounded by rival insurgents in the Harem district of Idlib province. Meanwhile, a group calling itself the Islamic Front, which is the biggest insurgent alliance in Syria, issued a strong warning to the ISIL militants, vowing to fight against the group.

The slain reporter of Al-Jazeera International and Reuters was on an assignment for a Spanish media outlet. Many journalists have lost their lives in the Syrian conflict which began in 20-11.

Rival insurgent groups continue to fight each other in syria. In the latest development, the so-called Free syrian Army has seized a compound held by al-Qaeda-linked militants in syria\'s northwest. Opposition sources say the F-S-A insurgents seized the compound after chasing fighters loyal to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Aleppo\'s Manjib town. The I-S-I-S militants reportedly used car bombs for the first time to defend the compound. The foreign-backed battle against the syrian government has turned into full-scale infighting in recent days. The al-Qaeda-linked group has suffered huge losses in two days of fighting against an alliance of militant groups in Aleppo and Idlib provinces. Dozens from both sides have been killed in clashes since Friday.

Pillay said her office has received reports of a series of mass executions of civilians and soldiers in Aleppo, Idlib and Raqqah by militants, especially by al-Qaeda affiliates, fighting the Syrian government. Pillay says exact numbers are hard to verify, but many civilians and soldiers in the custody of militants have been executed since the beginning of this year.
