Gunmen have assassinated a prominent pro-Syria figure in southern Lebanon, Syrian official SANA news agency says.
On Wednesday, the state-run news agency said Mohammed Darrar Jammo, the head of the political and international relations division of the International Organization for Arab Immigrants, was killed outside his home in the southern Lebanese coastal town of Sarafand.
On April 29, Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi survived an assassination attempt after bomb attacks targeted his vehicle in downtown Damascus. The bombs were detonated in the al-Mazzeh neighborhood of the capital as Halqi\'s vehicle was passing through the area.
Three bodyguards of the Syrian prime minister and the driver of the vehicle were killed in the blasts.

Lebanese nationals who were held captive by insurgents in Syria now talk about their ordeal. One of them has described the captors as inhuman.
Abbas and ten other Lebanese nationals were snatched by militants in Syria as they were returning from a visit to religious sites in Iran in 2012. He says the kidnappers constantly tormented them during the 17-month detention. The man says the psychological abuse they suffered at the hands of the hostage takers was even worse than the physical torture. Another ex-hostage says the captors kept telling lies to them about their fate to mentally torture them. The hostages arrived in Beirut on Saturday and were greeted by cheerful crowds.

There\'s been a fresh US drone strike in Afghanistan. At least four people have been killed in the fifth attack over the past four days.
Afghan officials say the airstrike took place in the north-eastern Kunar province near the border with Pakistan. The latest deaths bring to 22 the number of people who\'ve been killed in recent days. Washington uses its killer drones in several Muslim countries including Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen. It claims to target Taliban and al-Qaeda-linked militants but many of the casualties are civilians. The United Nations has urged the US to be more transparent on its drone strikes.

The Syria peace talks or the Geneva TWO conference remains in doubt amid wrangling between foreign-backed opposition groups.
Arab League Chief Nabil al-Arabi has announced that the Geneva conference will be held on November 23. But the UN-Arab league envoy has refused to announce a date. Lakhdar Brahimi-- who\'s on a tour of the Middle East to drum up support for the initiative-- says the talks can only be held if a credible opposition takes part in it. The remarks were in reference to a growing rift among foreign-backed opposition factions. The so-called Syrian National Coalition says a decision whether to attend the talks would be taken in the coming days. But, it remains unclear whether it can enforce any agreement as dozens of militant groups have recently rejected the umbrella group as their representative.

Deadly violence continues to plague Pakistan. A bomb has hit a passenger train in the southwestern Balochistan province.
At least seven are dead, over a dozen injured. The bomb was apparently planted on the railway track. It went off when the train approached a station in Naseer-Abad district, causing the daily express to derail. The train was travelling from Rawalpindi to Quetta, the main city in the insurgency-hit province. No group has yet claimed responsibility. Our correspondent says the death toll may rise because six of the wounded are in critical conditio

In Egypt, students of al-Azhar University hold a protest, demanding the reinstatement of the country\'s ousted President Mohammed Morsi.
Thousands of students gathered in the campuses of the university in the capital Cairo and other cities for a third consecutive day. They chanted slogans against the army-installed interim government. Security forces reportedly arrested more than forty of the students during clashes. The rallies were held as the Egyptian prime minister threatened tough measures against those who want to divide the country. Egypt has been witnessing a political crisis and street protests after the army toppled Morsi in early July. Security forces have killed hundreds of protesters ever since.

Another shooting incident in the US. A shooter at a middle school in Nevada shot a teacher dead and injured two other students before turning the gun on himself.
The incident happened just before the scheduled start of classes. Reports say the shooter was a student at the school. The incident was the latest in a string of shooting rampages across the United States in recent years, which have reignited a national debate over gun control.

Saudi Arabia says it plans to make a major shift in its dealings with the United States.
The Saudi intelligence chief says Riyadh\'s ties with Washington have been deteriorating for a while over several issues. A source close to Bandar bin Sultan says Riyadh\'s new stance is in protest at Washington\'s inaction over the war in Syria and the issue of Palestine. He\'s also voiced concern about the U-S growing closer to Iran. Bandar bin Sultan also criticized Washington for failing to back his country when it deployed forces to crush the popular uprising in Bahrain. The source close to the Saudi prince has hinted that the planned change in policy would have wide-ranging consequences, including for arms purchases and oil sales.
