President Bashar al-Assad made an unprecedented pledge of greater freedom and more prosperity to Syrians Thursday as anger mounted following a crackdown on protesters that left at least 37 dead. As an aide to Assad in Damascus read out a list of decrees, which included a possible end to 48 years of emergency rule, a human rights group said a leading pro-democracy activist, Mazen Darwish, had been arrested. In the southern city of Deraa, a hospital official said at least 37 people had been killed there Wednesday when security forces opened fire on demonstrators inspired by uprisings across the Arab world that have shaken authoritarian leaders. Announcing the sort of concessions that would have seemed almost unimaginable three months ago in Syria, Assad adviser Bouthaina Shaaban told a news conference the president had not himself ordered his forces to fire on protesters: "I was a witness to the instructions of His Excellency that live ammunition should not be fired -- even if the police, security forces or officers of the status were being killed." Assad, she said, would draft laws to provide for media freedoms and allow political movements other than the Baath party, which has ruled for half a century. Assad, who succeed his late father Hafez al-Assed in 2000, had, Shaaban said, decreed the drafting of a law for political parties "to be presented for public debate" and would strive above all to raise living standards across the country. She said another decree would look at "ending with great urgency the emergency law, along with issuing legislation that assures the security of the nation and its citizens." DERAA KILLINGS Security forces opened fire on hundreds of youths on the outskirts of Deraa Wednesday, witnesses said, after nearly a week of protests in which seven civilians had already died. The main hospital in Deraa, in southern Syria near the Jordanian border, had received the bodies of at least 37 protesters killed Wednesday, a hospital official said. Around 20,000 people marched Thursday in the funerals for nine of those killed, chanting freedom slogans and denying official accounts that infiltrators and "armed gangs" were behind the killings and violence in Deraa. "Traitors do not kill their own people," they chanted. "God, Syria, Freedom. The blood of martyrs is not spilled in vain!" As Syrian soldiers armed with automatic rifles roamed the streets of the southern city, residents emptied shops of basic goods and said they feared Assad's government was intent on crushing the revolt by force. Assad, a close ally of Iran, key player in neighboring Lebanon and supporter of militant groups opposed to Israel, had earlier dismissed demands for reform in Syria, a country of 20 million people run by the Baath Party since a 1963 coup. Assad's father took personal in 1970.

Five years after the invasion of Iraq, two leading opponents of the US-led occupations in the Middle East come to Manchester to talk about the reality of the War on Terror on the ground at a public rally. The event is organised by the Stop the War Coalition as part of its build up to the World Against War demonstrations that were due to take place globally on March 15th 2008. This meeting is a chance to hear key figures from the Middle East and leading activists and writers from Britain discuss the impact of the war on terror and the continuing campaign to get the troops out. The speakers include two eyewitness reports from Iraq and Lebanon: 1. Ibrahim al-Moussawi is editor of the Lebanese Hezbollah newspaper, al-Intiqad, and one of the key spokespeople for the popular resistance to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 2006. 2. Hassan Juma'a is President of the Iraqi Oil Workers Federation, and a leader of the campaign to stop the US-led privatisation of Iraqi oil. They are joined at the rally by Chris Nineham, national chair of the Stop the War Coalition. Ibrahim Mousawi defies a campaign by warmongering Conservative Party leader, David Cameron, to keep him out of the country. "Governments should not censor what people have to say and confiscate the right of intelligent people to decide what to hear or not to hear. French lawmakers approve burqa ban French lawmakers have ratified a legislation to prohibit women from wearing face-covering veils despite right activist saying such a law violates personal and religious freedoms. The Senate voted 246 to 1 in favor of the bill, which has already cleared the lower chamber, the National Assembly, reported AFP. The law will come into effect if the Constitutional Council does not question its legality. Muslims argue that the legislation is going to discriminates against France's Muslim population, which is already facing rising level of Islamophobia. Once in place, the law will allow authorities to arrest and fine those women who defy the ban. A woman who continues wearing veils will receive a fine of EUR 150 (USD 195) or a course of citizenship lessons. A man who forces a woman to go veiled will be fined EUR 30,000 and imprisonment. France is home to the largest Muslim population among the 27 European Union member states. Nearly 10 percent of the 62 million people living in French is Muslim. In June, members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) unanimously voted against any general ban against burqa or niqab in Europe, saying Muslim women should be free to choose their clothing. Demonstrations took place around the country Friday in support of the mass protests in Egypt this week. At the National Press Club in Washington, Egyptian leaders gathered to ask the White House to stand with the Egyptian people in their demands to the nation's government. The United States has expressed its firm support for the Mubarak regime and although vague expressions of concern for the freedoms of the Egyptian people have been made, an outright denunciation of Hosni Mubarak is yet to be heard. Dr. Samia Harris of the Alliance of Egyptian Americans had this message for Vice President Joe Biden in response to his affirmation of the Mubarak government. Egyptian rights activist Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim called the events in Egypt as a revolution, and in response to a question about the impact of revolution on the United States' so-called War on Terror, he had this to say: After the press conference, demonstrators rallied in front of the White House to make their demands known. These include withdrawing military and economic aid from Egypt, which is the second highest recipient of foreign aid from the U.S. after Israel, at an annual $2 billion. Though the world's eye is currently transfixed on Egypt, these demonstrators turn to the White House in demanding an end of U.S. support for the Mubarak regime.
