Press TV has conducted an interview with Elias Farhat, retired Army General, about the US strongly condemning the Syrian Army\'s liberation of the city of Qusayr, which served as the major stronghold of foreign-backed armed insurgents.

Syrian army forces have cleared the strategic border city of Qusayr of foreign-backed militants after two weeks of fierce fighting. For the militants, losing Qussayr meant a cut off in supply lines of weapons and arms. But for the Syrian government, the city has been a strategic location. As international efforts are underway to fashion a political solution to end the crisis in Syria, the army is gaining the upper hand in its fight against the militants after retaking the strategic city of Qusayr. Elian el-Khamissi reports from Beirut.

On this episode of the program, George Galloway comments on the Turkish unrest and asks if the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is paying the price for the policies he has been pursuing across the border in Syria and elsewhere over the last few years. Turkey has been the scene to a fierce anti-government unrest in the last week. The unrest broke out after police crushed a sit-in staged in Taksim Square on May 31 which was held to protest against the government plan for Gezi Park. The anti-government demonstrations have mainly been held in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Mugla, Antalya, and many other cities and towns. Turkish Human Rights Foundation says some 4,300 people have been hurt or sought medical care for the effects of tear gas inhalation. Four people have also been killed during the unrest. Galloway asks if Erdogan is earning the wage of his sin in support of the Syrian militants. The government of Erdogan has been one of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad\'s harshest critics and has supported the foreign-backed militants fighting to topple his government. The Syrian crisis resulted in the death of many Syrians and the destruction of the Syrian cities.

South Lebanon wakes up to news that a top Syrian figure has been gunned down in the town of Sarafand. The assassination of Mohammed Darrar Jamo comes just a week after a pre-dominantly Shia suburb was rocked by a massive car bomb blast. Analysts say the violence in Lebanon is directly linked to foreign-backed armed groups losing foothold in neighboring Syria. Press TV\'s Altaf Ahmad reports from South Lebanon.

As fighting continues between foreign-backed militants and Syrian troops, neighboring countries seem to be dragged into the confrontation. The Turkish government has been a key ally to al-Nusra Front fighting against the Syrian army.

Outskirts of Qatana --the main city in the south western countryside of Damascus-- was one of the strong-points for the foreign-backed militants which was cleared from insurgents more than six months ago and is still in control of the government forces. Large parts of Syria have plunged into darkness after a huge blast targeted the main gas pipeline feeding electricity stations south of the country. The explosion caused massive but partial power outages in all Syrian governorates. The Electricity Ministry says technicians and workers are trying to fix the problem. Meanwhile, in the capital Damascus, mortar shells fired by foreign-backed insurgents killed at least two civilians. In another attack, a booby-trapped car went off near an army checkpoint at the entrance of the Dummar residential area in Damascus. The sound of an explosion was also heard near the main church in the area.

The World Health Organization says at least 22 people in Syria, mostly babies have been infected by the polio disease. The organization confirmed that this would be the first outbreak of the illness in Syria in 14 years. The country\'s health ministry has begun a vaccination drive. There are more than 100-thousand children now at risk of polio in Deir Ezzor province alone, which has been caught in fighting between Syrian government forces and foreign-backed militants. The country has been going through unrest since March 2011, which has cost the lives of over a hundred-thousand people there.

Syria\'s grand Mufti Sheikh Ahmed Badreddin Hassoun says at least two-thousand Russian citizens are currently fighting along foreign-backed insurgent inside Syria. Sheikh Hassoun made the remark during a visit to the Islamic University of Moscow. Hassoun said from the beginning of the unrest in Syria more than two-thousand Russian nationals, mostly of Chechnya origin, have moved to Syria to fight the government there. He\'s added that a large number of those people have been killed so far and Damascus estimates that some 1300 of them are still operating inside Syria. According to Syria\'s grand Mufti, most of those Russian nationals are from North Caucasus and citizens of Commonwealth of Independent states.

UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi says Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could play a constructive role in a future transition in his country. Brahimi is in Damascus on the latest leg of a regional tour to rally support for the upcoming Geneva talks. In an interview with a French magazine ahead of his trip, he said a deal on Syria\'s arsenal of chemical weapons has transformed Assad from Quote-- a pariah into a partner. On Sunday, the veteran Algerian diplomat was in Tehran, where he insisted on Iran\'s participation in the Geneva conference. However, Brahimi faces an uphill task in convincing the fractured foreign-backed opposition to attend the talks. And 19 militant groups have issued threats against those who plan to attend the Geneva conference. Brahimi says he fears Syria may become a failed state like Somalia if a peace agreement cannot be reached.

The Southern border region between Tunisia and Libya is a closed military zone where the army is fighting against terrorists who were responsible for dozens of attacks which killed more than 20 soldiers and policemen since July 2013. The Unions of Police forces have declared that the armed militants joined training camps in Libya and have been fighting with foreign backed-insurgents in Syria
