US Secretary of State John Kerry has called on the Syria\\\'s divided foreign-backed opposition to join the upcoming peace conference in Geneva. Kerry says the purpose of the Geneva Two conference is to find a way to install a transitional government. The US secretary of state says the opposition can veto any names for an interim leadership, including President Bashar al-Assad\\\'s. Kerry also says that the talks in Geneva are the only way to end the bloody conflict in Syria. The deeply divided foreign-backed opposition will vote Friday on whether to attend the peace talks which are scheduled for next week.

Foreign-backed insurgents in Syria are increasingly using kidnapping as a means to fund their activities in the northern city of Aleppo. Militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have been named as the main culprits in insurgent-controlled areas. A London-based opposition group says that 80-percent of kidnappings target activists and journalists. Only this week, two Swedish journalists were abducted by insurgents. The missing are a combination of foreign and Syrian journalists. 30 journalists are currently being held and 52 have been killed in the country since early 2011.

The so-called Friends of Syria group is meeting in London in an attempt to persuade the foreign-backed Syrian opposition to participate in a peace conference scheduled to be held in Geneva next month.

Foreign-backed insurgents in Syria have reportedly massacred at least 30 civilians in Idlib province. The killings took place as members of an al-Qaeda-linked group-- known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-- fired a series of mortar shells on Kafteen village. The insurgents in a separate incident also fired mortar shells on a town in Hasakah province. The attack primarily targeted a police station and led to the injury of a number of civilians. Locals say they\'ve seen some people vomiting after the shelling-- in what could be a sign of a chemical attack.

Foreign-backed insurgents in Syria have kidnapped 12 nuns from a convent in the Christian town of Ma\'lula. Local authorities say the insurgents have taken the nuns to the nearby town of Yabrud. There is no word on the fate of the nuns, but militants are usually known to kill people they kidnap. The insurgents have entered Ma\'lula several months after they were pushed out of the historic town. The Syrian army has been battling the insurgents in the regions near the capital Damascus. The army has cleared many towns and villages of the insurgents. Sources close to the militants have admitted that government forces have been making significant gains near Damascus and elsewhere in the country.

It includes mortar launchers, machine guns, night vision goggles, and explosive devices. Damascus says the militants receive the arms from some Western as well as regional countries namely Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. Here is al-Qusayr; the most important supply station for foreign-backed insurgents and one of their last strongholds in western Syria. Foreign-backed militants continue their attacks on residential areas in Syria. The insurgent shelling of the Meridian district of the northern city of Aleppo killed several civilians on Wednesday. They also captured the area of Adra, northeast of the capital Damascus. More than 20 civilians, mostly Alawites, are said to have been killed in the militant attack there. This is while, Kurdish People\'s Protection Units have recaptured the north-eastern village of Tweineh, near al-Hasakah city, following clashes with militants of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front. In recent days, some regional and international leaders have warned of growing extremism in Syria. This, as insurgents fighting the Syrian government enjoy the logistical and financial supports of Western and some regional Arab countries.

Press TV sources say the insurgents were trying to infiltrate into Syrian territory from Lebanon. But the Syrian army chased them, killing a dozen and injuring many others. Syrian troops have on many occasions blocked such attempts by the foreign-backed insurgents over the past months. Syria has been rocked by deadly unrest since March 20-11. Damascus says armed terrorists are the driving factor behind the deadly violence while the opposition accuses the security forces of being behind the killings.

The military wing of Syria\'s foreign-backed opposition, known as the Free Syrian Army says it will not take part in the upcoming conference in Geneva which is aimed at ending the conflict in Syria. Mokdad told Press TV that the international community must give guarantees that President Bashar al-Assad will step down. He says the opposition, Syrian National Council will hold a vote to decide whether to take part in the conference or not. A few days ago, the leader of the FSA pledged to continue fighting despite the planned peace conference . The UN, US and Russia have been trying for months to persuade the foreign-backed opposition to attend the peace talks with the government in January. Damascus has said the Syrian people must decide on the future of the country and their government.
