[23 June 2014] Car bomb explosion causes injuries in southern Beirut - English

A bomb explosion has ripped through a passenger bus in the south of Russia, killing six people. The incident came as the bus carrying around 40 people, was traveling on the Volga River in the city of Volgograd. According to security officials and investigators, a suspected female bomber detonated the bomb inside the bus. There is no immediate information about the identity of the bomber and the motive behind the incident. More investigation is underway.

Large parts of Syria have plunged into darkness after a huge blast targeted the main gas pipeline feeding electricity stations south of the country. The explosion caused massive but partial power outages in all Syrian governorates. The Electricity Ministry says technicians and workers are trying to fix the problem. Meanwhile, in the capital Damascus, mortar shells fired by foreign-backed insurgents killed at least two civilians. In another attack, a booby-trapped car went off near an army checkpoint at the entrance of the Dummar residential area in Damascus. The sound of an explosion was also heard near the main church in the area.

There\'s been a deadly bomb attack near the Iraqi city of Baquba. The car bomb explosion in a suburb of the city killed at least 19 people. Over two dozen others were also wounded. Iraqi officials blame such incidents on al-Qaeda elements operating in the country, and also on the remnants of the former Ba\'athist regime. The latest attack comes as Iraqi security forces are conducting mop-up operations in the western province of Anbar. Thousands of people were killed in nationwide terror attacks last year alone.

A bomb explosion has left at least nine people dead in northwest Pakistan. Scores of others have been injured. The blast took place on the rooftop of a religious center in Peshawar. That\\\'s the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on the border with Afghanistan. It came as more than 8-hundred people had gathered for evening prayers. According to a bomb disposal squad, around five kilograms of explosives were used in the attack. Elsewhere in Nowshera city in the same province, police defused another bomb also near a religious center. No person or group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, but pro-Taliban militants have led a bloody campaign against the Pakistani state in recent years.
