[23 June 2012] Egypt may be facing hard coup - English
Egyptian protesters have remained in Cairo's iconic Liberation Square, protesting the delay in announcing the winner of the presidential elections and the risk of a coup by the country's military rulers. A delay in the run-off results, which had been due on Thursday, has raised widespread suspicions that the result is being negotiated rather than counted. Many fear that the delay is the army's move to declare former premier Shafiq the winner.
Press TV has conducted an interview yesterday with Hisham Jaber, director of the Center for Middle East Studies, to hear his opinion on this issue.

In Egypt, an alliance of Islamic groups called anti-coup alliance has finally made its widely-expected announcement about the constitutional referendum slated for January.
The alliance was formed following the July\'s ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi --- a move which it sees as a military coup. In its long-awaited announcement, the alliance said it had weighed the option of rallying for a No-vote, but finally decided to go for a boycott. The alliance said it\'s against the referendum, because it will be held by a government which it says has killed and detained many people following Morsi\'s ouster.

A military coup has taken place in Egypt, depending who you talk to. Western countries, like the US, have not described it as such, just like the opposition NSF in Egypt.
Nevertheless, an interim army-appointed leader has been sworn in office, until parliamentary and presidential elections.
In this edition of the show we look at the dynamics of how and why this coup took place, reactions by some regional and western countries, and what may be in store for Egypt in the months to come.

IN AUGUST OF 1953 IRAN HAD A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT. ITS PARLIAMENT AND PRIME MINISTER, THE POPULAR MOHAMMAD MOSSADEGH, HAD NATIONALISED THE OIL INDUSTRY TO CONTROL THE COUNTRY’S CHIEF ASSET. THEN THE CIA INTERVENED.
I am honoured to be in the timeless city of Cairo. (cheering) We meet at a time of great tension between the United States and Muslims around the world. Tension rooted in historical forces that go beyond any current policy debate. For many years Iran has defined itself in part by its opposition to my country and there
is, in fact, a tumultuous history between us. Since the Islamic revolution Iran has played in role in acts of hostage taking and violence against US troops and civilians. In the middle of the Cold War the United States played a role in the overthrow of a democratically elected Iranian government. This history is well
known.

Following several days of mass protests that had gripped the country on a national level, the Egyptian army has ousted the country\'s first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in a move described by the ousted president as a full military coup. That was the final decision after army\'s 48-hour ultimatum for political factions to reach an agreement came to an end. General Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, Head of Egypt\'s Armed Forces accompanied with religious authorities as well as political figures announced the decision and presented a political roadmap for the transition period. Based on the army\'s roadmap, the much disputed constitution has been suspended temporarily and Adly Mansour, the head country\'s Supreme Constitutional Court has been named as the acting president until early elections are held.

calling for the respect of the legitimacy of the Tunisian government. They also denounced the military coup in Egypt, which they described as a Western conspiracy. The demonstrators slammed the financial aid by Saudi Arabia and the UAE to the Egyptian Military commanders amid a strong outrage by millions of supporters of the country\'s ousted president Morsi. The Tunisians warned against similar interference in their country. The protesters waved the Egyptian flag and addressed messages to the agents of former Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali who fled to Saudi Arabia following a popular uprising in 2011.

Tension is still running high in Egypt. More demonstrations have been held in the cities of Giza and Alexandria.
Protesters in the two cities chanted slogans denouncing last year\'s military coup. In Alexandria, an angry crowd torched a vehicle after police targeted them. Some of the protesters also gathered at the journalists\' union and burned copies of government newspapers in a show of discontent over the curbs on freedom of expression. Muslim Brotherhood supporters have been staging almost daily protests to demand the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. Friday\'s demonstrations turned violent after security forces clashed with protesters in major cities. At least 17 protesters were killed and dozens injured. Meanwhile, the army-installed government pledged to confront the Muslim Brotherhood with full force after the group called for a million-man march on Wednesday.
