A territorial dispute between China and Japan seems to be far from over. In the latest development, Beijing has sent four coastguard vessels to the disputed islands in the East China Sea. The move follows Beijing\'s mention of war after Tokyo approved a plan to shoot down Chinese drones if they fly over Japan\'s airspace. China has threatened to take firm countermeasures, if Japan fires on its drones. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has accused China of trying to change the status quo in the region by force, adding that\'s why Tokyo is expected to take a leadership role over regional security issues. The relations between the two Asian powerhouses have been strained particularly over a group of disputed islands-- known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China. Both countries claim sovereignty rights over the uninhabited resource-rich islands that are currently under Tokyo\'s control.

In Beijing the Chinese government gave its support to Iran\\\'s participation in a proposed international conference aimed at ending the Syrian conflict. Speaking to reporters, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Iranian input was essential for a negotiated end to the conflict.

U-S military aircraft fly over the disputed islands in the East China Sea without informing Beijing. The move comes days after China declared an air defense zone in the area. The Pentagon\'s spokesman says two U-S military aircraft have conducted operations over the islands disputed by China and Japan. Steve Warren says U-S aircraft carried out QUOTE normal procedures in the area. Under the rules declared by China, aircraft are expected to provide a flight plan, clearly mark their nationality and maintain two-way radio communication to allow them to respond to identification inquiries from Chinese authorities. The East China Sea includes a cluster of islands controlled by Japan but also claimed by China.

Washington calls Beijing\'s declaration of an air defense zone over the East China Sea provocative. White House spokesman Jay Carney says the United States does not recognize the plan and will NOT comply with it. He says the US will continue to conduct its military operations in the region like before. Carney also says China\'s behavior is not consistent with its role as a major power and called on Beijing to scrap the air defense zone. China says its decision to establish the air defense zone in the East China Sea is in line with international laws and Washington should respect it.

[07 June 2012] 'Russia, China back Iran nuclear rights' - English Moscow has issued a statement supporting Tehran's right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and will shore up its efforts to ensure the international recognition of Iran's right. Foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov noted that the issue will also be discussed during a Thursday meeting of Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Beijing. In Beijing, the Chinese government has called for a renewed effort to reach a long-term solution to the Iranian nuclear issue. With agreement in Vienna a real possibility, Chinese policymakers are busy thinking about what that might mean. Western politicians say the economic damage inflicted by the sanctions they have imposed has forced Iran to the negotiating table. Many Chinese analysts, however, say the main impetus towards a deal could now be coming from America. The US, Chinese experts say, needs better relations with Iran to wind down its commitments in southwest Asia.

China has warned the United States to be cautious in its words and actions with regard to territorial disputes involving China and its neighbors. The Chinese Foreign Ministry warning comes amid a diplomatic wrangle over Beijing\\\'s newly announced air defense zone in the East China Sea. Before this, Washington had warned Beijing against imposing an air defense zone over both the South China Sea and East China Sea. US State Secretary John Kerry said recently that Washington would help its regional allies in protecting their territorial waters. China and its neighbors lay similar claims to parts of the strategic and resource-rich seas. The development comes days after Chinese fighter jets chased the US and Japanese military aircraft inside China\\\'s newly declared Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea. Chinese defense authorities say they have sent more fighter jets to the zone. The Chinese air force described the mission as a defensive measure in line with international law. China says foreign aircraft passing through the airspace, including passenger planes, will have to identify themselves to Chinese authorities. The zone includes the skies over islands at the heart of a territorial dispute between Japan and China. China is also locked in territorial rows with the Philippines over wide swathes of the South China Sea and has said it might set up a similar zone there. Senior Chinese officials have repeatedly called on Washington not to take sides over the issue.

China\'s national Bureau of Statistics has released new figures on the country\'s economic outlook. The figures show China\'s economic growth was 7.5 percent in the second quarter of 2013-down from 7.7 percent in the first quarter of the previous year and the slowest pace in 23 years. Figures also show China\'s GDP has been staying under 8% for five straight quarters, which is a clear sign of distress. The government is now setting 7.5 percent economic growth target for 2013. Some economists have warned that China could face economic problems because of over-investment in its industries. India is expanding its fighting capability against China. 50,000 additional troops will be deployed on the Chinese border. They will be specially trained and equipped for mountain warfare. All of the Indo-China border falls in the high Himalayas. The two countries have a longstanding border dispute. It led to a bloody battle between them in 1962. India accuses China of occupying 38,000 square kilometers of its territory in the disputed region of Jammu and Kashmir, while the government in Beijing lays claim to 90,000 square kilometers of land in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India.

Iran\'s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani expresses hope that Tehran\'s new plan to resolve the Western dispute over its nuclear program would succeed soon with China\'s help. In a meeting with the Chinese president, Iran\'s top lawmaker also stressed that there\'s been no military deviation in Iran\'s nuclear program. Larijani also noted that Tehran and Beijing share similar positions on various regional and international issues. For his part, Chinese President Shi Jinping said that friendly ties between Iran and China are in the interest of the entire region. The two sides also exchanged views on the deadly crisis in Syria, stressing the need for a political solution to the crisis there.

Iran\'s President Hassan Rouhani has called on China to stand against what he described as the excessive demands of certain countries in nuclear talks with Tehran. President Rouhani told his Chinese counterpart over the phone that China is an important country with significant responsibilities over international issues. He said Tehran expects Beijing to play a stronger role in the efforts to solve the dispute over Iran\'s nuclear program. Rouhani says Tehran is determined to settle the issue within the frameworks of international law. Shi Jinping, for his part, praised what he described as smart steps by Iran over its nuclear program as well as its foreign policy agenda. He says a peaceful resolution of the case will only happen when the nuclear talks are based on mutual respect and the principle of equality.

North Korea has deported an American veteran who\'d been held since October for alleged hostile acts against Pyongyang. North Korean officials say they\'ve released 85-year-old Merrill Newman after he apologized for his alleged crimes during the Korean War, and also because of his age and health condition. The war veteran was pulled from a plane on October 26th while preparing to leave the country after a 10-day tour. He\'s now landed in Beijing, expressing happiness to be on his way home. Meanwhile, U-S Vice President Joe Biden has hailed North Korea for releasing the man, saying it was wrong to detain him in the first place. Biden has also called for another detained American to be swiftly released.

China has condemned Japan for criticizing its new air identification defense zone amid an escalating war of words between the two neighbors. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said the flight zone over a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea violates the freedom of aviation over the high seas and should be canceled. But China has once again defended the move-- saying Abe is using the situation to QUOTE maliciously slander Beijing. The Chinese Foreign Ministry says the establishment of the zone is in line with international laws and does not affect aviation freedom. Tensions have been running high between the two Asian powerhouses in the past year over the Japanese-controlled archipelago. Both countries have scrambled jets and carried out patrols in the area.
