This is a ‘meccan’ sūrah. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that reciting this sūrah carries the reward of reciting a quarter of the Holy Qur’an. The recitation of this sūrah drives away Shaitan and keeps one safe from Shirk. It is also among the five sūrahs that have been recommended to be recited during a journey, the others being sūrah an-Nasr, at-Tawhid, al-Falaq and an-Naas. Reciting sūrah al-Kafirun and at-Tawheed in compulsory prayers is a means for forgiveness of sins for the reciter, his parents and his children. If a person dies after reciting this sūrah, it is as if he has died a martyr. Recitation of this sūrah before sleeping keeps one safe the whole night.

The reward for reciting this surah is compared to ten times the number of cattle slaughtered on Eid-ul-Adha every year until the Day of Resurrection. When the Holy Prophet\'s (saw) son, Tahir, born to Khadijah al Kubra, died, Amr bin As and Hakam bin Aas taunted the Holy Prophet (saw) by calling him “abtar” (tail-less), whose progeny has been cut off. This surah was revealed to give glad tidings to the Holy Prophet (saw) that abundance of unbounded grace, wisdom and knowledge, mercy and goodness, spiritual power and insight, in highest degrees, and of progeny has been given to him. It is mentioned in Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hambal and other books of renowned Sunni scholars that the Holy Prophet (saw) said: “Kawthar is a stream of super excellence, exclusively belonging to me. Only the righteous believers (among my followers) will be allowed to drink from it. Ali shall distribute the water from it to them. On the day of judgement I will see some of my companions driven, like cattle, away from Kawthar. It will be announced that they are those who, after my departure from the world, deviated from the true religion and introduced innovations (based upon conjecture) to corrupt the faith.” From that day Imam Ali (as) was known and referred to by the companions as “saqi al kawthar”. “Kawthar” also means abundance of descendants. The countless descendants of the Imams of the Ahlulbayt (as), in the progeny of Imam Ali (as) and Syeda Fatimah (sa) are known as sayyids. They are the descendants of the Holy Prophet (saw).

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. The Quraysh, among whom the Holy Prophet (s) was born, was a tribe held in great esteem, as the guardians of the holy Ka-bah, by the Arabs. They were the descendants of prophet Ibrahim (as) through his son Ismail (as). The custody of the sacred shrine of the Ka-bah enabled them to obtain covenants of security from the rulers of neighbouring countries on all sides on account of which they travelled to Syria in summer, and to Yemen in winter, to carry out their trade. Their trade caravans enriched them, united them, and drew people from distant parts to visit Makka, to bring and take from there merchandise of various kinds. This honour and advantage they owed to their position as servants of the sacred house. They owed it to Allah. It was therefore right and fitting that they should worship Allah alone and accept as true the religion of Allah, Islam, brought by the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) said that the one who recites this surah will get the reward of ten times the number of people performing Tawaaf and I’tekaaf. The recitation of surah al-Feel and al-Quraysh in the compulsory prayers carries great reward. If this surah is recited on food, its ill effects are removed. Those with heart ailments should recite this surah and then gently blow into some drinking water and drink it. If a poor person recites this surah before sunrise, ALLAH (swt) will make it easy for him to get his sustenance.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. This surah refers to an incident in the history of Makka, as an example of how ALLAH (swt) deals with those who oppose HIS will. About fifty days before the birth of the Holy Prophet, Abraha, the Abyssinia\'s viceroy of Yemen, Christian by religion, proceeded against Makka, as the head of a large army, with the object of destroying the Kaabah, because he wanted that there should be no place or structure more glorious than the church he was building at Sana. He had with him elephants. Therefore he and his army is known as ashab al fil, those who brought elephants. At the outskirts of Makka he captured a large number of camels belonging to the chief of Makka, Abd al Muttalib, the grandfather of the Holy Prophet. After receiving the information that Abraha was coming to destroy the holy Ka-bah, Abd al Muttalib went to see him and said: \"I have come to collect my camels. The Ka-bah belongs to God. He will surely protect it from your evil design.\" Abraha gave the captured camels to Abd al Muttalib He returned to the city and asked the people to retire to the neighbouring hills, leaving the Lord of Ka-bah to protect it. When Abraha entered Makka, suddenly a large flock of birds, like swallows, came flying from the sea-coast and pelted the invading army with pebbles of baked clay. They all died. They were like a dead and useless field from which all the produce is eaten up and only straw with stubble is left. Abraha escaped and went directly to the king in Abyssinia. All the way a bird with a stone in her beak followed him. When the king asked Abraha as to what kind of birds they were, Abraha looked to the sky and the bird at once dropped stone in her beak and killed him on the spot.The lesson to be drawn is twofold. The pagans of Makka were forewarned that as the Holy Prophet was superior to the Kaabah, ALLAH, who protects whatever is HIS own, shall protect him from all their evil schemes. It is also a warning to men in all ages that \"if a man intoxicated with power comes out to defeat ALLAH\'s holy plan, he cannot prevail against ALLAH (swt), but his plan will fail and destroy him as well.“ It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) that whoever recites this surah in his faraa’idh prayers, the mountains will bear witness on the Day of Judgement that he prayed and he will be taken to Jannah on the command of ALLAH (swt). The person who recites this surah is kept safe from his enemies and has his difficulties and problems solved quickly. Recitation of this surah is also helpful in remaining safe from evil tyrant rulers.

This surah condemns those who slander others, whether by speech or action, and imagine that their own wealth will keep them immune from death, and describes, in brief yet evocative phrases, the doom of Hell which awaits them.The Holy Prophet (s) said that the reward for reciting this surah can be compared to ten times the number of disbelievers who were present in Makkah. According to some commentators it is a reference to the period in which the Holy Prophet (s) was sent into this world to preach the religion of ALLAH (swt), Islam, so that mankind, in all ages, come out from the darkness of ignorance into the light of divine guidance and reach higher realms of spiritual bliss. Some say that it refers to afternoon prayers (salatul asr). Imam Jafar bin Muhammad as Sadiq (as) said: \"It refers to the age when the living Imam of the Ahl ul Bayt, Muhammad bin Hasan al Mahdi al Qa-im (ajtfs), will be commissioned by ALLAH (swt) to administer the society of all human beings under the law of ALLAH (swt) prescribed in the religion of Islam.\" Whether it refers to the time of the Holy Prophet (s) or his true successor who will act according to the teachings and laws he brought from ALLAH (swt) to guide mankind, those who follow them will achieve success in the life of hereafter, and those who reject them will be the losers. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) has said that the person who recites this surah in his recommended prayers will have a shining face on the Day of Judgement. The one who recites this surah will be patient in adversity and will be counted from among the people of truth. If this surah is written after ‘Isha prayers and kept, it will be a safety from the tyrant ruler in whose presence one is brought.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. At takathur signifies, \"the contending among people for superiority in the amount of property or number of children and men.\" It keeps man heedless of the hereafter, having no time for spiritual life. It is reported that the people of Bani Abd Munaf, Bani Qu-asi and Bani Sahm had an inordinate craving for acquisition of more and more wealth and adherents or supporters. When once they dug up the graves of their followers to count even the dead to prove the superiority of one tribe over the other this surah was revealed. Rivalry in such things monopolises the attention of individuals and communities and leaves no time for higher purposes of life and spiritual attainments, therefore a clear warning is given in this verse for devotion of some time to spiritual attainments also. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that whoever recites this surah before going to sleep at night will be saved from the torments of the grave. If this surah is recited in faraa’idh prayers, the reciter will get the reward of a hundred martyrs. If recited in the nawafil prayers, he will get the reward of fifty martyrs. It is especially recommended to recite surah at-Takathur in the ‘Asr prayers and the person who does this remains under the protection of ALLAH (swt) until the day ends. Recitation of this surah is a cure from headaches. Another way of reciting salaat al-Wahshat (apart from the commonly known way) is to recite Ayatul Kursi once and surah al-Ikhlas twice after the Surah al-Hamd of the first rak’aat and then recite surah at-Takaathur ten times after the Surah al-Hamd of the second rak’aat.

Like many sura, the holy Quran here introduces a term (Al-Qaria, meaning \"the Calamity\"), and asks itself (and the reader) what it means: \"The Calamity! What is the Calamity? And what shall teach thee what is the Calamity?\". The answer is said to be a specific day, which has not yet come to pass. On that day \"men will be like scattered moths, and the mountains shall be like plucked wool\". This day is presumably the Day of Judgment. The image is of chaos and collapse, both of the social order of humanity, and of the cosmological order of the universe itself. The sura continues with this theme of balance The sura ends as it began, asking about how one will learn the meaning of the word \"the Pit\" - which is explained to be known in \"the blazing fire\" of Hell.Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) has said that the person who frequently recites this surah will be saved from the heat of hellfire. If a businessman or a person in financial difficulties keeps this surah in his possession, the doors of sustenance will be opened to him. Recitation of this surah in prayers also increases in one’s sustenance. Water in which this surah has been dissolved is useful in keeping away unwanted pests (eg. Insects and rodents).

In a tradition from the Holy Prophet (saw) it is said that the reward for reciting surah Aadiyat is equivalent to ten times the number who are present in Arafah and Muzdalifa at the time of Hajj. If a person has many creditors, recitation of this surah will help clear his debts. If recited by a person in fear, this surah brings him to safety; if recited by a hungry person, it helps in his finding sustenance; if recited by a thirsty person, his thirst will be quenched.

It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) that whoever recites this surah in his nawafil (recommended) prayers will not die as a result of an earthquake and will be saved from all the natural calamities. The experience of death is made easy for the one who recites this surah and he sees the light of Jannah as he is about to die. Then, seventy thousand angels accompany his soul to the heavens. Keeping this surah in one’s possession is a safety from tyrant rulers.

If this surah is written as a talisman and then tied to one’s back, after which he goes into his wife, then ALLAH (s.w.t.) will give him a child who will be a means of pride and blessings for him.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. Ghashiyah means that which overshadows or overwhelms-a terrible thing or event which makes people lose their senses. The “day of Judgement” is indicated as an event when all that which we have seen and experienced in the life of this world will be lost and the only reality before us will be the process of reckoning. It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (saw) that the one who recites this surah will not face difficulty in the accounting of deeds on the “Day of Judgement” and ALLAH (swt) will show Mercy to him/her and save him/her from Jahannam. Reciting this surah near a baby removes fright from him/her and stops his/her crying. Imam Ali (as) has said that if this surah is recited over a paining part of the body, the pain will go away and if recited over food items, it removes any bad effects of that food.

It is narrated that the reciter of this surah will get the reward equal to ten times the number of letters in the divine books that were revealed to the Holy Prophet (saw), Prophet Ibrahim (as) and Prophet Musa (as). It is also said that in the hereafter, he/she will be told to enter Jannah through whichever door he/she pleases. Imam Ali (as) used to recite this surah often in his compulsory prayers. Surah al-Ala is also good for relieving ear pains and other ailments.

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) said that a person who recites this surah properly will get a chance to meet the Holy Prophet (saw) and if he/she prays for a specific wish he/she will get InshALLAH. Recitation of this surah protects one from insanity and from being a slave to people.

If a person recites this surah, especially on Thursday mornings, he/she will be rewarded with a hundred houries and four thousand slaves in Jannah and he/she will be given a place close to that of the Holy Prophet (saw). Mursalat, in addition to the winds sent forth, refers to all the communicating agencies who convey the divine blessings and grace to the created beings in various stages and realms, such as prophets, angels and other conscious and unconscious functionaries in the activity of communication. The Holy Prophet (saw) has said that the one who recites this surah will not be counted from the Mushrikeen (polytheists). He/she will always be victorious over his enemy. It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) that drinking this surah after it is written, and then dissolved in water that is mixed with the water from an onion, acts as a cure from aches and pains. Keeping this surah, written on deerskin, as a talisman, enables one to reduce the amount of time he/she sleeps and he/she will be able to stay awake for a longer time.

This is a ‘meccan’ surah. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) has said that whoever recites this surah everyday will be fortunate enough to visit Masjidul Haraam (Makkah) in the same year. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that memorization of this surah carries great reward.If this surah is recited with the intention of staying awake, then the reciter will not fall asleep and if it is recited before travelling then the journey will become easy. Drinking water in which this surah has been dissolved cures stomach problems.

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (as) has said that the one who recites this sūrah will have his sins hidden on the Day of Judgement and he will enter Jannah alongside the Holy Prophet (saw). If a prisoner recites this sūrah, he will secure his release. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) said that if this sūrah is recited before sleeping, one keeps safe from the temptations of Shaitan (la).

This is a “meccan” surah. The Holy Prophet (saw) said that those who recite this surah will get a reward equal to the number of people who believe in Prophet Nuh (as). Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (as) said that those who believe in ALLAH (swt), His Prophet (saw) and recite the Holy Qur’an, should never leave out surah Nuh as they will gain a place among the favoured servants of ALLAH (swt) by reciting it. He will get three places in Jannah instead of one and he will be given 200 hur or huriyah . Any supplications made after reciting this surah are quickly answered.
