Iran, Algeria vow to enhance ties Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has stressed the importance of taking practical steps to bolster ties with Algeria in line with the interests of both countries. Ahmadinejad, who left Tehran for New York to attend the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly, arrived in Algiers on Saturday in the second leg of his three-nation tour. In a meeting with his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the two presidents exchanged views on promoting mutual relations as well as the key issues of the Muslim world including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bouteflika pointed to Iran's position in the Middle East and the Muslim world and said Algiers is resolute to expand relations with Tehran. He added that the expansion of ties between Iran and Algeria would be beneficial for Muslim countries. Ahmadinejad's visit to Algeria comes after his trip to Damascus and meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad earlier in the day. The Iranian president is slated to attend the UN General Assembly and the Millennium Development Goals summit to be attended by 140 heads of states in the United States. The Leader pointed to the growing power of the Islamic Revolution despite three decades of conspiracies and plots, and added, \\\"The Great Satan has brought to stage its military, financial, propaganda and political cartels in a bid to defeat the Islamic Revolution and the Iranian nation but the realities of the political scene of Iran and the region demonstrate that the US has been brought to its knees in its confrontation against the Islamic Revolution.\\\" Ayatollah Khamenei further reiterated the Islamic nature of the recent popular uprisings in the region and the influence and effects of Iran\\\'s Revolution on these uprisings. \\\"Today, Islam and Quran are prevailing among the youths and the regional nations after the failure of the hegemonic system\\\'s nonstop attempts, and this reality is the radiant rise of a flag hoisted by the Iranian nation on this land in 1357 (1979).\\\" In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has been sweeping the Arab world. In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali. In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of his authoritarian rule. Other revolutions later erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while other anti-government unrests are growing in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and somehow Algeria.

The 29th International Holy Quran Competitions started at Tehran\\\'s Milad Tower International Convention Center on Sunday. Officials and reciters of Holy Quran from more than 65 Muslim and non-Muslim countries have taken part in the six-day event, IRNA reported. Hojatloleslam Mohammadi Golpayegani, head of the Supreme Leader\\\'s office, Seyyed Mohammd Hosseini, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and Iranian MPs and ambassadors were present at the opening ceremony of the event. Representatives of 65 Muslim and non-Muslim countries took part in the 29th edition of Iran\\\'s International Holy Quran Competitions. The jury of the contest has 14 members, 5 of whom are Iranian and the rest are from other countries. A Quran memorizer from Isfahan province and a Quran reciter from Khuzestan province will represent Iran in the memorization and recitation sections of the international event. Iranians win first prizes at 29th International Quran Competition An Iranian Quran reciter and a memorizer won the first prizes at the 29th International Quran Competition, the organizers announced in Tehran on Friday. Qasem Moqaddami received the first prize in the recitation category and Hossein Motamedi won the first prize in the memorization category, Persian news agencies reported on Saturday. They were selected from among over 50 reciters and 40 memorizers competing from about 70 countries. Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Hosseini, and a number of Iranian officials attended an award presentation ceremony held at Tehran�s Milad Tower on Friday. The second prize in the recitation category was handed to Ezzat Sayyid Rashid from Egypt and the third prize went to Mahmood Salman Ali from Bahrain. Reciter Sabruddin Abdulrahman from Indonesia was selected as the fourth winner and the fifth was Najam ul Hassan from Bangladesh. In the memorization category, the second prize was given to Ainul Arefin Rafiqul Islam from Bangladesh, while Abdullah Omar from Libya got the third prize. The fourth and fifth awards were handed to Mahdi Khair Al-Balil from Sudan, and Abdul Malik Muhammad Rahim from Afghanistan. A jury panel of 14 selected from Egypt, Malaysia, Algeria, Indonesia, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon and Iran judged the event. Egyptian master Quran reciter Ahmed Naina was among the jury members for this year�s competition.

The Syrian information minister says Saudi Arabia is responsible for death and destruction throughout the Muslim world today -- including in Syria. Omran al-Zoubi made the remarks in a television interview, in which he advised Riyadh to halt its policy of terrorism against Syria and other regional countries, such as Iraq, Lebanon, and Algeria. He had particularly scathing criticism of the Saudi foreign minister, saying Saud al-Faisal has always driven Saudi policy toward failure. The comments came after a meeting between Faisal and his U-S counterpart, John Kerry. During the meeting on Monday, the Saudi official reportedly lamented the international community\'s inaction on the Syrian crisis, particularly the U-S decision not to intervene militarily. Syria has long accused Saudi Arabia of being one of the main regional patrons of the foreign-backed militants, which provides military and financial support to them.

The UN-Arab League envoy for syria Lakhdar Brahimi says that Iran has not been invited to the Geneva Two conference, at the request of the US. Brahimi announced the list of countries officially invited to the Geneva Two conference-- aimed at finding a diplomatic solution to the syrian crisis. Among the countries invited to the event are Morocco, Algeria, South Africa, India and Indonesia. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry have reportedly held talks on the upcoming Geneva conference. Russia insists that Iran should be part of the talks, saying excluding Tehran from the conference would be counter-productive.
