Egyptian security forces have fired tear gas at dozens of university students outside their Cairo campus. The violence broke out when the students tried to reach the nearby Defense Ministry building. Dozens of students pelted security forces with rocks, while some picked up tear gas canisters and threw them back. The students were demonstrating outside Ain Shams University in eastern Cairo as part of a widening protest movement at universities against the military-backed government. With these actions, supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi have been keeping up the pressure on the authorities. Demonstrations have been held at Al-Azhar University and the University of Cairo in recent months.

Saudi Arabia has sentenced a Shia activist to 13 years in jail and a 15-year travel ban. Human Rights Watch says a judge convicted Adel al-Labbad in the Eastern Province on Thursday. Labbad faced a total of five charges, including disobedience to the ruler and disturbing public order. Media across the kingdom has not yet reported on the sentence. Meanwhile, the Saudi public prosecutor has demanded the death penalty for a 20-year-old man accused of participating in anti-regime protests. Saudi Arabia is one of the most repressive countries in the world where there\'s zero tolerance for dissent.

A US appeals court has put Saudi Arabia back as a defendant in lawsuits, saying it had given support to al-Qaeda prior to the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. The federal appeals court in New York City has revived claims by families of victims of the attacks. Another court had previously ruled that Saudi Arabia was protected by a legal privilege which says foreign countries can\'t be sued in American courts. The US says nearly three thousand people were killed in the attacks. It says most of the attackers were Saudi nationals who hijacked planes and flew them into the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington.

A pledge to punish Tel Aviv; the leader of Lebanon\\\\\\\'s resistance movement Hezbollah accuses Israel of assassinating one of its senior commanders. Hassan Nasrallah says the group will punish those behind the killing of its members. Nasrallah was referring to the December 4 assassination of Hezbollah\\\\\\\'s senior commander Hassan Laqqis. He added that all evidence points to Israel\\\\\\\'s role in the killing. Nasrallah also rejected Arab media reports about his movement\\\\\\\'s casualties in Syria, describing them as part of the psychological warfare against the resistance. Nasrallah also said the war in Syria is not a sectarian one between Shias and Sunnis. According to Nasrallah, all Takfiri and Salafi militants who are fighting in Syria share the al-Qaeda ideology.

Ten international human rights groups have written to the United Nations about the torture of journalists in Bahrain. The letter, signed by the Media Legal Defense Initiative and the International Federation for Human Rights, among others, has been sent to U-N special rapporteurs Frank La Rue and Juan Méndez. The rights groups have called for an investigation into the arrest, detention, and torture of Mohamed Hassan, Hussain Hubail, and Qassim Zain al-Deen. All three journalists were arrested in August and face trial on charges related to their reporting on the anti-regime demonstrations. Thousands of people, including rights activists and journalists, have been detained and tortured since the uprising began in Bahrain in 2011. Over the past three years, Manama\\\'s heavy-handed crackdown, which is being backed by Saudi forces, has killed scores of people.

Iran\\\'s deputy foreign minister has rejected Bahrain\\\'s accusations, alleging that Tehran is involved in regional crises. Hossein Amir Abdollahian emphasized that Tehran is in favor of political solutions to crises across the region, including the unrest in Bahrain. He noted that Iran views the situation in Bahrain as an internal issue, adding that only the Bahraini people are entitled to decide their own future. He however advised the Manama government against adopting wrong measures to deal with the unrest. Earlier, Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Al Khalifah accused Iran of interfering in the internal affairs of regional countries and supporting terrorist groups.

He went on a hunger strike in which he consumed only liquids fortified with vitamins that lasted for more than eight months until April 2013. His protest attracted widespread attention in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Issawi only ended his protest after Israel agreed to shorten his sentence and give him an eight-month parole violation sentence. Israel currently holds thousands of Palestinian prisoners. Palestinian officials say over 200 Palestinian security prisoners have died in Israeli prisons since 1948.

Syria\\\'s official news agency, SANA, has lashed out at the US for condemning the government for airstrikes in the northern city of Aleppo. SANA says Washington views the unrest in Syria in a partial, biased way, ignoring crimes committed by militants fighting the government. On Monday, Washington condemned as QUOTE \\\"indiscriminate\\\" the bombings of Aleppo which have reportedly been taking place for the past nine days. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 15 people have been killed in the latest airstrikes, bringing the total death toll to over 360 during the period. The group blames the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for the bombings. Damascus has not made any comments yet. Press TV can not independently verify the group\\\'s claims.

Christians from around the world flocked to Bethlehem to celebrate Christmas. The festivities were marked with marching Palestinian bands, concerts and the coming of the Latin Patriarch, a yearly ritual where he makes his pilgrimage from Jerusalem al Quds to Bethlehem to conduct prayers in the Church of Nativity. Israel has made an announcement that they produce tenders for a further 2000 new illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem al Quds. Israeli prime minister made the announcement just one week before the Israelis are set to release 24 Palestinian prisoners who have been held in Israeli jails since before the Oslo agreement in 1993. Members of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation slammed the Israeli authorities for defying calls from both the EU and the US to halt settlement expansion and further stated that this move could seriously jeopardize the US brokered Palestinian Israeli negotiations.

UN human rights experts express serious concern about US drone attacks resulting in civilian casualties in Yemen. The UN special rapporteur on extra-judicial, summary or arbitrary executions says Yemen cannot accept violations of people\\\'s right to life. This, as the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture also says that deadly attacks on illegitimate targets amount to cruel or degrading treatment. According to the world body, 16 civilians were killed when two separate wedding processions were targeted by US drones in Yemen on December 12. The UN says the victims were mistakenly identified as al-Qaeda members. The US think tank, New America Foundation says about a hundred drone strikes have killed some 9-hundred people in Yemen since 2002.

An Israeli court has extended the house arrest of the mentally-ill Palestinian teenager Ahmad Dawuod Obeid.The 19-year-old was beaten and arrested by Israeli forces back in August in Issawiya, near Jerusalem al-Quds. Ahmad appeared in court several times on charges of throwing stones at Israeli forces. He faced a heavy fine and was later released on condition that he remains under house arrest.

On the other side of the town, tensions escalated as the funeral service of a teenage victim of Friday\\\'s attack, turned into a scene of clashes between Future Bloc officials and Lebanon\\\'s highest ranking Sunni cleric Grand Mufti Mohammad Rashid Qabbani. It\\\'s a new funeral here and another one there and bloodshed here in Beirut continues. Such bombings carry the message that when extremism infiltrates the region, it\\\'s bound to hurt all factions.

In Iraq, 44 members of parliament announce their resignation after security forces dismantle an anti-government protest camp. The lawmakers are demanding the withdrawal of the army. Earlier in the day, clashes broke out between gunmen and police in the central city of Ramadi where the camp was located. Three policemen and ten gunmen were killed. The violence also spread to the nearby city of Fallujah. The lawmakers are also calling for the release of detained MP Ahmed al-Alwani who backs the anti-government protesters. On Saturday, security forces raided Alwani\\\'s home. Deadly clashes broke out after his guards opened fire on the police. Seven people -- including the MP\\\'s brother, five guards and a security force member - were killed before Alwani was taken into custody.

Hundreds of Palestinians have gathered at the Erez crossing with Israel as Tel Aviv prepares to release 26 Palestinian prisoners. The release, expected in a few hours, is the third of four planned stages. All 26 of the Palestinians have spent between 19 and 28 years in Israeli prisons. 18 are from the occupied West Bank, three from the Gaza Strip, and five from East Jerusalem al-Quds. Last summer, Israel agreed to release a total of 104 long-serving Palestinian prisoners. The deal was made during the US-brokered direct talks between the Israelis and the Palestinian Authority. Despite the latest release, thousands of Palestinians are still incarcerated in Israel -- and many of them have not even been charged with any offense.

Syria\\\'s prime minister says his country\\\'s government is gaining major diplomatic victories thanks to the support from its allies. Addressing the Syrian parliament, Wael al-Halqi referred to Russia, Iran, and China as the countries that have helped his nation win such victories. He said the ties between Damascus and Tehran are as strong as the relations with Moscow and other BRICS countries. The Syrian premier said-- without this support-- Syria could see more aggression and pressure. Halqi also praised Syria\\\'s allies for helping it implement the agreement on the destruction of its chemical weapons. He\\\'s epxressed hope that this would enable Damascus to score more victories in future, especially in the upcoming Geneva two conference.

Egyptian security forces have once again clashed with supporters of ousted president Mohammad Morsi. An anti-government protest rally was held near the defense ministry headquarters in Cairo. Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse hundreds of pro-Morsi students who had blocked a nearby road. Similar clashes broke out between police and pro-Morsi students in the Nile Delta city of Zakazik and the city of Alexandria where two demonstrators was killed and several others were injured by live rounds. The protesters demand Morsi\'s reinstatement. Egypt has seen deadly protests following Morsi\'s ouster by the military back in July. Meanwhile, students of Cairo\'s al-Azhar university have called for mass rallies in the city\'s iconic Liberation Square on Friday.

There\'s been a deadly bomb attack near the Iraqi city of Baquba. The car bomb explosion in a suburb of the city killed at least 19 people. Over two dozen others were also wounded. Iraqi officials blame such incidents on al-Qaeda elements operating in the country, and also on the remnants of the former Ba\'athist regime. The latest attack comes as Iraqi security forces are conducting mop-up operations in the western province of Anbar. Thousands of people were killed in nationwide terror attacks last year alone.

A 14-year-old Pakistani student has become the latest victim of targeted attacks against Shia Muslims in the restive northwest. The boy succumbed to his injuries sustained in a bomb attack in Ibrahim-zai area of Hangu district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. So far, there\'s been no claim of responsibility. Such incidents are usually blamed on the al-Qaeda and its offshoots. According to Human Rights Watch, more than eight-hundred people have been killed in targeted attacks against Shia Muslims in Pakistan since 2012.

A prominent human rights group accuses Israel of presenting no evidence in the case of killing two Palestinian teenagers in the West Bank in 2013. Human Rights Watch says Israeli forces hid near schools and killed two children who posed no threats to them. In January 2013, Samir Awad was shot three times in the leg, back and head. The 16-year-old was about 250 meters away from his school when he was shot. Also in December, an Israeli soldier shot dead 16-year-old Wajih al-Ramahi in an area between his school and a market. The HRW says there is no justification for the use of live ammunitions in either of the cases. Last week, another Palestinian teenager died of the wounds he sustained after being shot by Israeli soldiers near the Gaza border.

The group has pledged not to cave in under attacks similar to last week\\\'s car bombing in Beirut\\\'s southern suburbs. The comments came after the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-- ISIL, claimed responsibility for that attack. The ISIL said the bombing was in retaliation for Hezbollah\\\'s support for the Syrian government. Hezbollah says terrorist attacks will not change its stance on Lebanon or Syria. Infighting between rival insurgent groups is raging on in Syria. Opposition sources say that foreign-backed militants have seized the headquarters of al-Qaeda-linked insurgents in the northern city of Aleppo. The sources added that members from several insurgent groups have taken control of a children\'s hospital in Qadi Askar district that is the headquarters of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in Aleppo. Meanwhile, other reports from Syria say at least 20 militants have been killed in a car bomb near the northern city of Dakoush. The attack was reportedly carried out by militants from the I-S-I-L. The recent tension among militant groups fighting the Syrian government has been the deadliest since the conflict began in the war-torn country back in March 20-11.
