The Syrian army continues mop-up operations against foreign-backed insurgents on the outskirts of the capital Damascus. Syrian troops have taken over key areas in the suburbs of the city of Adra near Damascus. A large number of militants have been killed during the operation. Adra has been the scene of atrocities against local residents after it was seized by the militants. The insurgents have committed a series of kidnappings and executions, especially targeting religious minority groups in the city over the past few days.

Syrian troops have made more advances, regaining control of key areas in the town of Adra, 30 kilometers from Damascus. During their offensive in the area, the Syrian troops killed a large number of foreign-backed insurgents. The AL-Qaeda linked militants committed atrocities in the area after seizing control of Adra. Members of religious minority groups residing in the city have been the main target of the militant attacks over the past few days. The insurgents executed more than 80 civilians and kidnapped scores of people to be used as human shields. Al-Qaeda linked groups often resort to executions and abductions to frighten the local people.

Syrian media reports say 22 Saudi terrorists have been killed in an attack by the army on the al-Nusrah front and the Jaysh al-Islam insurgents in Adra. The Syrian army launched a heavy crackdown against militants in Adra after they seized control of the town two days ago. The al-Qaeda-linked insurgents reportedly beheaded 50 civilians-- including the town\'s mayor, and hung up their heads in a market. Adra which is located northeast of Damascus, has a population of about 100-thousand including Alawites, Druze, Christians and Sunni Muslims. Syria has been gripped by a deadly war since 2011.

The militants have reportedly attacked the mausoleum and exhumed the grave of Hujr ibn Adi in the Damascus suburb of Adra, and took his remains to an unknown location. Foreign-backed militants continue their attacks on residential areas in Syria. The insurgent shelling of the Meridian district of the northern city of Aleppo killed several civilians on Wednesday. They also captured the area of Adra, northeast of the capital Damascus. More than 20 civilians, mostly Alawites, are said to have been killed in the militant attack there. This is while, Kurdish People\'s Protection Units have recaptured the north-eastern village of Tweineh, near al-Hasakah city, following clashes with militants of the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front. In recent days, some regional and international leaders have warned of growing extremism in Syria. This, as insurgents fighting the Syrian government enjoy the logistical and financial supports of Western and some regional Arab countries.
