The report suggests that the Saudi diplomat made those comments despite being aware that the conversation was probably being monitored by the NSA. As the gap between Riyadh and Washington becomes deeper, the Arab country has apparently turned to Israel for support.

The Iranian former foreign minister made the remarks in a televised interview in Tehran on Monday. \"The issue of foreign affairs... and the domestic economy have close ties to one another,\" he said. Velayati, who is currently serving as an advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, stated that he would pursue Iran\'s nuclear rights if elected in the upcoming presidential election. \"I would like to assure our dear people that we will solve the nuclear issue by preserving the nuclear rights and we will boost international relations without relinquishing an iota of Iran\'s rights.\" The Principlist candidate added that Iran has \"billions of dollars in foreign countries,\" and that \"we need an active diplomacy,\" to return it. He also emphasized boosting the country\'s economy by privatizing state-run sectors, increasing production, and fully implementing the state subsidy program. Presidential candidate Hassan Rohani says the US-engineered sanctions against Iran are illegal, because the West acknowledged the peaceful nature of Iran\\\'s nuclear energy program almost nine years ago. In a televised speech on Monday, Rohani said \\\"the Board of Governors [of the International Atomic Energy Agency] unanimously confirmed the peaceful nature of Iran\\\'s nuclear energy program in November 2004.\\\" \\\"We did not allow the nuclear dossier to be referred to the Security Council. In the course of one year, we proved the peaceful nature of our nuclear energy program,\\\" the presidential candidate stated. Rohani said that from October 2003 to August 2005 -- his term as Iran\\\'s top nuclear negotiator -- the country\\\'s policy, under the supervision of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, was to repel threats and \\\"to convert them to opportunities\\\" in order to disprove Western allegations that Iran is pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program, and to foil Washington\\\'s plots against the Islamic Republic. \\\"The US wanted to say that Iran is after a [nuclear] bomb. Mansour Arbabsiar, an Iranian-American used car salesman, was arrested at New York\'s John F. Kennedy International Airport on September 29, 2011. He was charged with planning to assassinate Saudi Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir in a bomb attack on a restaurant in Washington. He signed a plea bargain offered to him by Preet Bharara, U-S Attorney for the Southern District of New York. After this one-sided out of court deal, which benefited the District Attorney, Arbabsiar was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison. He was represented by Sabrina Shroff, a federal public defender appointed by the court. Arbabsiar\'s family says that Shroff used unethical means to make her client sign the plea bargain.

In Egypt, three prominent activists have gone on trial for defying a controversial protest law. Ahmed Maher, Ahmed Douma, and Mohamed Adel are accused of organizing an illegal protest on November 30. Maher and Douma are also charged with allegedly assaulting police officers at another rally last month. The charges stem from a new law imposed by the military-backed government following the ouster of president Mohamed Morsi in early July. Maher and Douma supported Morsi\'s removal, but oppose what they see as the army\'s attempts to crack down on freedom of expression. Reports say the trial of the three leading figures-- who had a major role in the 2011 downfall of former regime-- has been adjourned now. Cairo has drawn international fire for the protest law, which has sparked violent protests nationwide. The law bans any protest assembly without prior permission from the police.

Saudi Arabia has sentenced a Shia activist to 13 years in jail and a 15-year travel ban. Human Rights Watch says a judge convicted Adel al-Labbad in the Eastern Province on Thursday. Labbad faced a total of five charges, including disobedience to the ruler and disturbing public order. Media across the kingdom has not yet reported on the sentence. Meanwhile, the Saudi public prosecutor has demanded the death penalty for a 20-year-old man accused of participating in anti-regime protests. Saudi Arabia is one of the most repressive countries in the world where there\'s zero tolerance for dissent.
