When calling him, Husayn (as) used to say, “May I be sacrificed for you.” He loved him very much. I don’t know how Zaynab (as) used to call Abbas (as). These were their private conversations. Imam Husayn, his Imam, said, “May I be sacrificed for you.” Zaynab was his sister and sisters are more compassionate, tender-hearted and loving. She was a sister and full of affection. For example, consider when they were on the way. It was God’s mercy that detailed memories of this caravan while travelling to Karbala have not been recorded. [It’s as if they say,] “Why do you want to know?” For example, they haven’t recorded Zaynab saying, “My Abbas, get Ali Asghar. Hug Ruqayya for a minute.” I want to say, “O Aba al-Fazl, don’t go into the battlefield. Don’t go. I plead you.” Abbas came to say goodbye. Husayn (as) said, “Do you want to leave Husayn alone?” Alas for Abbas’s sorrows and sufferings. O Abbas, go and see what you can do for Husayn (as). You will have to become a martyr. But at least bring this waterskin back with some water so that you can relieve your sorrow a little by doing this. Abbas had so much hope and picked up that waterskin so confidently that the children felt less thirsty. They told each other, “Our uncle is going to bring water.” “Did you see how our uncle picked up the waterskin?! That’s it. Rabab, hold onto Ali Asghar. Water is coming. The way our uncle picked up the waterskin shows that we’ll have water soon.” When the enemies would beat Husayn’s children while traveling to Damascus, they would call for their uncle! How could they tell the children that their uncle would not return anymore?! He picked up the waterskin so confidently that everyone thought the same. Abbas (as) expected the same. There is a sentence in history books that shows Aba al-Fazl was surprised himself too. When his hands were cut off, he didn’t care. But as soon as an arrow struck his waterskin, it is said that Abbas stood still. O Abbas, you didn’t expect this? It was then that he begged God to take him [due to his shame].

The Secret behind the Special Status of Hazrat Abu al-Fazl al-Abbas (\'a) Everything for Aba Abdullah al-Husayn (‘a) in Karbala was Abbas. Does a person become like this because his hand is cut off? No! Where a person is struck isn’t what makes a difference. A person’s body strength isn’t what makes a difference. What is it that separates Aba al-Fazl al-Abbas from the rest so much? Intention! “And I will fight with whoever fights with you.” He was thinking about the world. Do you know what Abbas’s intention was that he reached to this height? Saving the entire world! He didn’t want less than this. He was standing with Imam Husayn (‘a) and he saw 72 helpers, a few tents, and 30,000 enemies. But, he was thinking about the world, about humankind. He was big. It is not unlikely that on the day of Ashura he was thinking about Imam Mahdi’s (‘a.j.) reappearance. He wasn’t caught up with small problems. Look at a part of Aba al-Fazl al-Abbas’s intention. It is obvious that even if we are martyred we will not reach to this point. It is very difficult for a person to have worked on correcting his intention this much. The only person who asked Imam Husayn (‘a) in this way to enter the battlefield was Aba al-Fazl al-Abbas (‘a). He said, “My Master, I’m tired of these hypocrites. Give me permission to go and take revenge.” You should always have this intention of destroying the enemies of religion somewhere in your heart. Yah! If I could destroy them. Yah! I wish I could strike them hard, O God! Having this intention against them is very purifying and uplifting. See how much the Imam’s (‘a) enemies are cursed in the Ashura Supplication? Why should we just send our greetings upon the Imam (‘a) with much feeling? “And I will fight with whoever fights with you.” (Ashura Supplication) Do you know what Abal Fazl al-Abbas’s intention was that he reached this level? Saving the entire world. Hating the enemies. This should be a part of our intention. You have probably heard that tradition about Imam Javad (‘a). He would pound his fist on the ground and say, “I’ll kill and burn.” He was asked, “What? Who? What are you doing? Where are you now?” He said, “The one who came and burned the door of the house of our mother, Fatimah Zahra (‘a).” This means that our mother was pressed between the door and the wall, and thought, “My sad story will reach my children. The hatred of my enemies will enter their hearts, and they will grow.” What an expense was made for your luminous hearts between the door and the wall. Whoever comes to the Bani Hashim Alley and sees the burned door, won’t leave this alley anymore. A tradition says, “If a person doesn’t wish to kill the enemies (of Islam) with his sword someday, and he dies, he has died with a kind of hypocrisy.” “If a person is not in the battlefield, or he doesn’t read the tradition about holy war for himself, he will leave this world with a kind of hypocrisy.” (Sahih Muslim, vol. 3, p. 1,517)

He said, “This world is such that the Children of Israel would behead their prophet at night and live their life comfortably in the morning.” The Imam recited an elegy for one of the beheaded prophets in order to help Abdullah bin Umar lose his infatuation with this world. “This world isn’t worth it. Come with me. It’s a world where such crimes take place.” What should hearing Imam Husayn’s elegies do to us? You friends who are mourning for Aba Abdillah al-Husayn and who love him, accept this that we have just started our relationship with Imam Husayn (as). The Imam’s martyrdom has not yet affected us. Do you know when his martyrdom will affect us? It’s when we start feeling the same way Zaynab felt when he said goodbye, and she fainted and collapsed. It’s when you take this elegy seriously on the night of Ashura, “Tonight the king of religion is a guest in her tent. O morning, don’t rise!” Who can be affected by Aba Abdillah al-Husayn’s (as) martyrdom? The one who has this unusual thought the night before Ashura, “Maybe they won’t kill Husayn (as) tomorrow. Maybe. Could it be possible?” You say, “The story finished 1,400 years ago!” But when one has an intense love, his mind functions like this and is under the influence of his love. When he is told that Husayn, the son of Lady Fatimah, was martyred on the evening of Ashura, his life changes. He’ll live differently from the next day. “You’re not infatuated with this world anymore?” He replies, “I saw this world is not worth it. İkincisi, laik yöneticilerin çaba ve tahakkümüne rağmen ve onların bu ülkelerdeki dine karşı açık ve gizli çabalarına rağmen İslam muhteşem ve apaçık bir güçle sahnededir, gönüllerin hidayetçisi olarak söz ve amelde milyonluk kitlelerin toplantılarına canlılık ve hayat veren bir pınar durumundadır. Ma\'zeneler, tekbirler ve İslami sloganlar bunu ifade eden gerçeklerdir. Tunus\'ta gerçekleşen son seçimler de bu iddiayı kanıtlayan kesin bir delildir. Hiç şüphesiz diğer ülkelerde de serbest seçimler gerçekleşecek olursa Tunus\'ta gerçekleşen sonuçtan farklı bir sonuç ortaya çıkmaz. Üçüncüsü, bu yıldaki olaylar herkese gösterdi ki Aziz ve Kadir Allah milletlerin iradesinde öyle bir güç vermiştir ki hiçbir güç ona karşı koyacak bir güce sahip değildir. Dördüncüsü, müstekbir devletler ve onların başında Amerika onlarca yıl boyunca türlü türlü siyası ve güvenlik oyunlarına başvurarak bölge ülkelerini kendi emirlerine boyun eğdirmiş, kendi zanlarınca iktisadı, kültürel ve siyasi sultaları için engelsiz bir ortam oluşturmuşlardı. Şimdi bu devletler milletlerin nefretlerinin hedefi durumundadırlar. Kesinlikle bilmemiz gere-kir ki bu inkılaplardan meydana gelen nizamlar asla önceki zillet dolu denklemlere boyun eğmeyecektir. Bu bölgenin siyasi coğrafyası milletlerin eliyle ve onların izzeti ve tam bir bağımsızlığı yönünde seyredecektir. Beşincisi, Batı\'nın münafık ve aldatıcı yapısı, bu ülkelerin halkları nezdinde artık iyice bilinmektedir. Mısır\'da, Tunus\'ta ve Libya\'da, Amerika ve Avrupa ellerinden geldiği kadar kendi maşalarını korumak için çalışmışlardır. Ancak milletlerin iradesi onların isteklerine üstün geldiğinde halkın yüzüne aldatıcı gülücükler sunmaya başladılar. Son bir yılda gerçekleşen olaylarda meydana gelen ilahi açık alametler bu saydıklarımızdan daha fazladır. Tefekkür ehli için bu alametleri görmek zor değildir. Ancak bütün bunlara rağmen bugün İslam ümmeti ve özellikle kıyam eden milletler iki temel unsura muhtaçtırlar. 1- Direnişi sürdürmek ve azimlerin gevşemesini önlemek: Yüce Allah\'ın Kur\'an\'da Peygamber\'ine emri şöyledir: \"Artık sen ve seninle beraber bulunan ve tövbe etmiş olanlarla birlikte, nasıl emredildiyse öylece dos-doğ‏ru hareket et.\" (Hud: 112) Yine Hz. Musa\'nın dilinden şöyle diyor: \"Musa kavmine, \"Allah\'tan yardım dileyin ve sabredin. Kuşkusuz yeryüzü Allah\'ındır; onu kullarından dilediğine miras bırakır ve (güzel) son takvalı-larındır.\" dedi.\" (A\'raf: 128) Kıyam etmiş milletler için bu dönemde takvanın somut örneği kendi mübarek hareketlerini sürdürmeleridir. Kendilerine iyi sonuç vaat edilen takvalıların taşımaları gereken en önemli takva unsuru da bundan ibarettir. 2- Uluslararası hilelere ve bu hareketlerden darbe alan güçlere karşı uyanıklık: Düşmanlar boş durmazlar; bütün siyasi, güvenlik ve mali güçleriyle bu ülkelerde elden çıkan güç ve nüfuzlarını yeniden elde etmek için çalışırlar. Onların ellerindeki vesile aldatma ve tehditten ibarettir. Tecrübe göstermiştir ki elit kesim arasında onlara araç ve vesile olacak kimseler bulunurlar, bunlarda olan korku, ihtiras ve gaflet bilerek veya bilmeyerek düşmana hizmet etmelerine yol açar. Gençler, din alimleri ve aydınlar bu tür sapmaları dikkatle gözetlemelidirler. En önemli tehlike bu ülkelerin yeni siyasi yapılarında küfür ve istikbar cephesinin müdahale etmesi ve etkili olmasıdır. Onlar bütün çabalarıyla yeni kurulan nizamların İslami ve halkçı bir yapıya sahip olmaması için çalışacaklardır. Bu ülkelerdeki samimi kimseler ve ülkelerinin izzet, onur ve ilerlemesine önem veren her kes yeni kurulacak nizamların tam manada İslami ve halkçı bir içeriğe sahip olması yolunda çaba göstermek durumundadırlar. Bu arada hazırlanacak anayasaların önemli bir konumu vardır. Milli birliliği korumanın yanı sıra, mezhebi, kabilevi ve dil farklılıklarını resmiyete tanımak gelecek-teki zaferlerin şartıdır. Mısır\'da, Tunus\'ta ve Libya\'da kıyam eden şecaatli halk, diğer uyanık ve mücadeleci milletler bilmelidirler ki onların Amerika\'nın ve diğer müstekbirlerin zulüm ve oyunlarından kurtulmaları dünyadaki güç dengesinin onların lehine değişmesine bağlıdır. Müslümanlar, sorunlarını ciddi bir anlamda emperyalistlere rağmen çözebil-meleri için kendilerini dünyadaki bir güç olacak düzeye ulaştırmalıdırlar. Bu da sadece İslam ülkelerinin gönül birliği ve işbirliği ile mümkün olabilir. Bu İmam Humeyni\'nin unutulmaz vasiyetidir. Amerika ve Nato habis ve diktatör Kazzafi\'yi bahane ederek aylarca Libya halkının başına ateş yağdırdılar. Kaddafi Libya milletinin şecaatli kıyamından önce onların yakın dostlarından sayılır onu bağırlarına basıyor ve onun aracılığı ile Libya\'nın servetini yağmalıyorlardı. Onu aldatmak için elini sıkıyor veya öpüyorlardı… Halkın kıyamından sonra onu bahane ederek Libya\'nın bütün altyapısını tahrip ettiler. Hangi ülke halkın Nato tarafından katledilmesine ve Libya\'nın tahribine engel olabilirdi? Kan içen ve vahşi Batılı güçlerin diş ve pençeleri kırılmadıkça sürekli İslam ülkeleri için bu tür tehlikeler söz konusu olacaktır. Bundan kurtuluş ancak İslam dünyasının güç bloğu oluşmayla mümkün olur. Bugün Batı, Amerika ve Siyonizm her zamankinden daha çok zayıflamışlardır. İktisadi sorunlar, Afganistan ve Irak\'ta birbirini izleyen yenilgiler, Amerika ve diğer Batı ülkelerinde her gün geçtikçe genişleyen köklü itirazlar, Filistin ve Lübnan halklarının fedakarca mücadeleleri, Yemen, Bahreyn ve Amerika\'nın nüfuzu altında olan ülkelerin halklarının kahra-manca kıyamları, İslam ümmetine ve özellikle yeni İnkılap etmiş ülkelere büyük müjdeleri içermektedir. İslam dünyasındaki mümin kardeş ve bacılar özellikle Mısır, Tunus ve Libya\'daki halklar, uluslararası İslam gücünü kurmak için bu fırsattan en güzel şekilde yararlanmalıdırlar. Ayatollah Khamenei made the remark in a message to the Hajj pilgrims. The full text of the message is as follows: In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful Greetings to the holy Ka’aba, the base of monotheism, and pilgrimage place of the faithful. The place on which angels land, and greetings to Masjid al-Haram, Arafat, Mash’ar and Mina, and greetings to humble hearts, and tongues mentioning God, and eyes opened with insight, and thoughts which have set examples to others, and greetings to you blissful Hajj pilgrims, who have succeeded in answering positive to the divine call and are taking advantage of this bountiful occasion. The first duty of Hajj pilgrims is to muse on this global, historical and eternal positive response to the divine call: “verily all thanks and blessings are yours as well as absolute rule, and there is no partner for you, and I accept your call.” All eulogies and thanks, belong to Him, and all blessings come from Him, and all the rules and power belong to Him. This is the viewpoint that is given to a Hajj pilgrim at the first step of this rich and meaningful obligation, and continuation of these rituals takes place in coordination with it, and then, like a lasting training and an unforgettable lesson, it is put in front of him, and requires him to regulate his life plan on its basis. Learning this great lesson and acting upon It, is the same blessed spring which can impart vivacity, liveliness and dynamism to the lives of Muslims, and relieve them from the problems with which they are grappling – both at this time, and in all other times. The idol of human proclivities, vanity and lust, the idol of seeking dominance over others and submission to dominance, the idol of the global arrogance, the idol of laziness and irresponsibility, and all idols that bring humiliation to the endeared human soul will be shattered with this Abrahamic outcry, when it comes from the bottom of one’s heart and turns into a life plan, and will substitute freedom and dignity and health for dependence and hardship and affliction. Brethren and sisters who are performing the Hajj pilgrimage, from any nation and any country, think about this wise divine word, and through a painstaking approach to problems facing the Islamic world, especially in West Asia and North Africa, define for yourself, in view of your personal and environmental capacities and potentialities, a duty and responsibility and then strive towards fulfilling it. Today, the mischievous policies of America in this region, which are the source of war, bloodshed, devastation, homelessness as well as poverty, and backwardness and ethnic and religious differences on the one hand, and crimes committed by the Zionist regime, which has taken its usurping behavior in the country of Palestine to the ultimate degree of ruthlessness and evilness, in addition to repeated violations of the sacred sanctuary of the al-Aqsa Mosque, and trampling on the lives and property of the oppressed Palestinians on the other hand, are the foremost problem for all of you Muslims. About which you must think and in the face of which you must know your Islamic obligation. Religious ulema, political, and cultural elites shoulder a much heavier responsibility, which is unfortunately ignored by them most of the time. The ulema, instead of fanning the flames of religious discord, and the politicians, instead of passivity in the face of the enemy, and the cultural elite, instead of being preoccupied with marginal issues, must try to know the great ailment of the Islamic world and accept their mission, which they are responsible to fulfill before God, and try to cope with it. The regretful incidents in the region, [including] in Iraq and the Levant and Yemen and Bahrain, and in the West Bank and Gaza, and in some other Asian and African countries, are major problems of the Islamic Ummah, in which the plotting hands of the global arrogance must be seen, and for which a remedy must be sought. Nations must demand this from their governments, and governments must remain loyal to their heavy responsibility. Hajj and its glorious gatherings are the loftiest place for the rise and exchange of this historic obligation. The opportunity to denounce [infidels], which must be valued through participation of all Hajj pilgrims, from all places, is one of the most expressive political rituals in this overarching obligation. This year, the bitter and devastating incident of Masjid al-Haram, brought bitterness to all Hajj pilgrims and their nations. It is true that those who passed away in this incident, who went to meet their God while saying prayers and going around Ka’aba and worshipping God, have achieved great bliss and are, God willing, resting in the sanctuary of divine safety, observance and mercy, and this could be a great source of consolation for their families. But this issue cannot reduce the heaviness of the responsibility of those people who are committed to providing security for the guests of the Beneficent God.
