Syrian government forces deal a major blow to foreign-backed insurgents in the Ghouta region near Damascus.
Army forces killed over 175 militants in an ambush near the capital city. Most of the fatalities are of Saudi, Qatari and Chechen origins. Syrian army sources say most of them were from the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front. Government forces have the upper hand in the battle against militants across the country.

Pakistan launches new airstrikes against militant hideouts in the northwestern tribal region, killing at least 30 people.
Military officials say the latest strikes mainly took place in the Shawal valley and Datta-khel areas of North Waziristan. They say fifteen militants were killed in the South Waziristan side of the border, and another 12 in North Waziristan. Militants are using these areas as training compounds for their attacks. Pakistani fighter jets have been pounding targets in the region since the government\'s efforts to hold peace talks with pro-Taliban militants broke down this month. In recent days, people of North Waziristan have evacuated their villages, anticipating a full-scale military offensive.

A Saudi source says Saudi Arabia is in talks with Pakistan to provide Syrian insurgents with anti-aircraft and anti-tank rockets. The source who is close to Saudi decision-makers referred to the recent meetings between Riyadh and Islamabad\'s high-ranking officials. Riyadh is seeking to provide the militants in Syria with Pakistan\'s version of Chinese shoulder-launched anti-aircraft missiles, known as Anza, and anti-tank rockets. The source also noted that Jordan will provide facilities to store the weapons before they are delivered to militants in Syria. The head of the Syrian National Coalition Ahmad Jarba said during a visit to northern Syria last week that powerful arms would be arriving soon.

A Syrian opposition leader has hailed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for expressing support for insurgents wounded during the conflict in Syria.
Muhammad Badie said the Syrian opposition is grateful to Netanyahu for his Thursday\'s visit to a field hospital in the occupied Golan Heights. Israeli doctors are treating Syrians, including anti-government militants, there. The Turkey-based leader added that Netanyahu\'s visit sent an important message. During the visit, the Israeli premier said that giving medical care to Syrians shows the true face of Israel. Syria and Israel are virtually at war. Last year, the Israeli military carried out at least three airstrikes against Syria. Damascus accuses Tel Aviv and its Western allies of aiding al-Qaeda-linked insurgent groups.

Iraq\'s Defense Minister says the army along with Sunni tribesmen were able to gain full control of the city of Al-Bu Ali Jasim in Iraq\'s Northern Anbar province. Fierce clashes have been underway between Iraqi security forces and militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant there since late December. The Defense Ministry has issued a statement saying that Sunni tribesmen were a big help in the equation.
Meanwhile, Iraq\'s capital Baghdad has been plagued with car bombs. The bombs have targeted heavily-populated areas and have killed at least 70 civilians this week alone. The Iraqi army has also claimed gains in the city of Sulaiman Bek. But the number of refugees from areas attacked by the militants keeps increasing with the UNHCR saying that over 300,000 refugees have fled the city of Fallujah and Ramadi in the Anbar province

The Syrian army has launched an offensive in the strategic Qalamun region to retake the town of Yabrud from al-Qaeda-linked militants.
Security sources say the army is advancing around the town and is expected to take control of the town soon. Yabrud has been under the control of militants since 2011. It\'s the last major town in the Qalamun region the army\'s fighting to retake. The town\'s located near the Lebanese border and explosives used in bombings in Lebanon are reportedly smuggled into the country from there.

Another day of bloodshed in Iraq. At least 22 people are killed in mortar attacks on a town south of the capital Baghdad.
Five mortar rounds hit a residential area, a market and a parking lot in the town of Musayyib. Over 50 people were also injured there. The town, which is close to the Shia-dominated city of Hillah, had been a former stronghold of insurgents. A bomb attack in the same town on Tuesday claimed five lives. Iraq has been witnessing a surge in attacks by al-Qaeda-linked militants for more than six months now. Reports say over 15-hundred civilians and security forces have been killed since the beginning of this year. That\\\'s in addition to 68-hundred people who lost their lives there last year.
