Flotilla organizers said they carried no weapons. The six-vessel flotilla, packed with hundreds of international activists, food and other humanitarian supplies, left Cyprus on Sunday night and was attempting to break Israel's long-standing blockade of the Gaza Strip. Israel had vowed to intercept the boats, by force if necessary, and tow them to the Israeli port of Ashdod, where passengers would be arrested or deported. Israel says the blockade of Gaza, which is controlled by the Palestinian militant group Hamas, is needed to combat terrorism. A live video feed from the Turkish boat showed images of Israeli soldiers boarding the vessel and firing some sort of weapons, though it was unclear whether the weapons were live rounds or less-lethal devices, such as stun grenades. The feed was abruptly cut.

What started as a regular basketball game between two teams, ended in the arrest of 30 Turkish youth. According to the indictment, they have been accused of "insulting Israel". This is not the first time Israeli players have been forced off the court. In 2009, some 3000 Turkish fans disrupted a game in the capitol Ankara. Soma analysts say these events shine a light on the growing rift between the long-time regional allies, who share trade, military and strategic ties. While Turkey is a predominantly Muslim country, it is a secular one, leading some to believe it will make a good role model for new governments in the Middle East. Turkey also maintains strong ties with Iran and with that growing influence across the region. The dilemma now rests with Israel and how long they feel their policies will keep them afloat.

Hundreds of people around the world have held demonstrations near Egyptian embassies to support the ongoing protests against President Hosni Mubarak. In Turkey, groups of people gathered outside the Egyptian Embassy in Ankara in a show of solidarity with protesters in Egypt. In London, demonstrators called on the Egyptian authorities to avoid the use of force against protesters. In the Tunisian capital of Tunis, a similar rally was held in front of the Egyptian Embassy to support the uprising in Egypt. "We are here to say that the Tunisian people are behind the Egyptian people. They have suffered in the way that we suffered. It's time for change," AFP quoted one protester as saying. A demonstration is also expected in Germany to show solidarity with Egyptian protesters. Egyptian security forces have clashed with protesters in the capital Cairo and several other cities where rallies are held against the government of Mubarak. Thousands of protesters have defied an overnight curfew and to stay on Cairo's streets. Security forces have been replaced with army troops on the streets of Alexandria. Latest reports at least three people have been killed during Friday's protests, bringing to 12 the number of those killed in the unrest. Scores of others have been wounded in the massive protests. Egypt's largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood, earlier called on all Egyptians to take to the streets. Sources say the opposition leaders brace for massive arrests across the country. The Egyptian government has cut all cell-phone and Internet services amid anti-government demonstrations that began after the Friday prayers. The army has also been brought in and military vehicles are seen on the streets of the capital following violent clashes between police and protesters. Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei was among other top figures, who attended the rally. Reports say ElBaradei has been placed under house arrest after joining the massive anti-government protests in Cairo. Security forces initially prevented ElBaradei from leaving a mosque in Giza. The mosque was under siege for several hours before ElBaradei was put under house arrest. ElBaradei has said he would help head a transitional government if Mubarak steps down. Many more people including opposition activists have been arrested. Protesters want an end to the decades-long rule of Mubarak.

A senior member of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood has expressed gratitude to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei for his support of the Egyptian revolution. Kamal al-Halbavi made the remark in an interview with the state-funded BBC Persian on Sunday night. Halbavi further expressed hope that Egypt would have "a good government, like the Iranian government, and a good president like Mr. Ahmadinejad, who is very brave." When asked about the Muslim Brotherhood's opinion of Ayatollah Khamenei's statements on Egypt's developments, Halbavi said, "Many thanks for Imam Khamenei and all who support the revolution in Egypt." Ayatollah Khamenei said in Tehran's Friday prayers last week that the recent developments in North Africa are the result of "Islamic awakening, which followed the great Islamic Revolution of the Iranian nation." The Leader of the Islamic Revolution made reference to Egyptians' fight for "dignity and honor" and noted that Mubarak's biggest crime was turning Egypt into an instrument in the hands of the United States. The Muslim Brotherhood member added that he wants his country to develop in all spheres "like Iran, achieving more technological and scientific advances and becoming a regional power." Troubled Egypt has been the scene of violent clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces during the past two weeks. Egyptians on Sunday took to the streets on the thirteenth consecutive day of demonstrations, called the "Day of Martyrs," to honor hundreds of protesters killed during the revolution in the crisis-hit country. The number of people killed in the Egyptian revolution is reported to be at least 300, and thousands were also injured in clashes that have rocked Cairo, Suez, and Alexandria, according to the United Nations.

New footage disputes account of Basij base incident Press TV has broadcast newly-obtained footage of a controversial clash between Basij members and protesters, which shows the Basij base under siege. Tehran became the scene of violence in recent weeks amidst rallies staged in protest at the outcome of the June 12 presidential election -- which saw Mahmoud Ahmadinejad re-elected to a second term in office. People described by Iranian officials as "saboteurs" infiltrated the riots and set fire to a mosque, two gas stations and a military post in western Tehran. At least 20 people were killed and many others were injured in the ensuing violence. The protests came to worldwide attention when major media outlets broadcast footage of what they described as unprovoked attacks by security forces. In Britain, Channel Four covered the news by airing a video of a clash between rioters and Basij members in which a man was seen shooting at the crowd. According to comments broadcast in a video provided by the government in Tehran, journalist Maziar Bahari had provided Channel Four with the footage of the June 15 attack. What was aired by the channel, however, had the scene of the attack on the base censored. The new footage obtained by Press TV shows a group of people attacking the Basij base with Molotov cocktails. Documentary on Freedom Flotilla - Press TV - English The death toll from the Israeli navy's takeover of a Gaza aid convoy has risen to 20 while Israel carefully censors reports on the casualties from the attack. Gaza Freedom Flotilla came under fire early on Monday by Israeli navy forces in international waters more than 150km (90 miles) off the coast of Gaza. The six-ship aid fleet was soon stormed by commandos descending from helicopters. At least 20 people were killed in the takeover of the Gaza aid convoy, al-Aqsa TV channel reported, saying that more than 50 people, including leader of the Palestinian Islamic Movement Sheikh Raed Salah, were wounded in the attack. The news trickled through the Israeli military censorship which has sought to block the reporting of any information about the casualties. A report on the Israeli radio said the censorship was aimed at covering up the number of casualties brought to Israeli hospitals for treatment. Meanwhile, Israeli Trade and Industry Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer expressed regret for the deaths aboard the Gaza aid ships. "The images are certainly not pleasant. I can only voice regret at all the fatalities," he told Israel's Army Radio. The comments come as the first official acknowledgement by Tel Aviv that the attack had turned fatal. Israel had initially declined to comment on the reports of casualties from the takeover of the aid ships.

A new video has emerged on YouTube depicting the latest brutality of the Saudi-backed Al Khalifa regime forces against the Bahraini people. The video shows the Bahraini security forces kicking a door in and firing tear gas into a house only to flee the scene seconds later in their police vans. Security forces on Friday resorted to violence once more, in an attempt to disperse a rally of anti-regime protesters who have been calling for an end of the Al Khalifa regime, a Press TV correspondent reported. The anti-regime demonstrations on Friday led to one woman being killed and several others being injured. Meanwhile, human rights groups have condemned Manama's political ploy in initiating national dialogue, saying the move is aimed at influencing the international community. They argued that the Bahraini regime is continuing its severe repression of protesters despite the ongoing national talks launched earlier this month. Human Rights Watch has also urged Manama to probe the dismissal of thousands of workers from state-linked firms and government jobs over participation in anti-government protests earlier this year. Thousands of anti-government protesters have been waging protest rallies in Bahrain since mid-February, demanding an end to the Al Khalifa rule, which has been in power for over 40 years. In mid-March, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates deployed their military forces in crisis-hit Bahrain to assist the Manama regime in its brutal crackdown on popular protests. Scores of protesters have been killed -- many under torture -- and numerous others detained and transferred to unknown locations during the regime's brutal onslaught on protesters.

Iran's Foreign Ministry summons the Swiss ambassador, who represents US interest in Tehran, in protest to 'interventionist' statements by American officials on Iran's election. The ministry also summoned the Canadian charge d'affaires to convey Iran's official protest to Ottawa over the Canadian officials' recent remarks on Iran's presidential vote. Several European envoys were also summoned on Tuesday over what Iran's Foreign Ministry called 'malicious stance' taken by their countries toward Iran. On Tuesday, US President Barack Obama expressed 'deep concern' about the post-election unrest in Iran but warned that meddling in Iran's internal affairs would be counterproductive. "We respect Iranian sovereignty and want to avoid the United States being the issue inside of Iran," he said. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon also called on Monday for what he called 'a full and transparent investigation into electoral fraud and discrepancies' in Iran's presidential vote. Friday's presidential election, which saw incumbent Iranian President Mahmoud re-elected for a second term in office, has caused mass rallies by hundreds of thousands of supporters of former prime minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi who reject the election as fraudulent. The interior minister, who is appointed by president and is in charge of holding the election, has denied the allegation, saying the ministry adopted methods which could not possibly be subject to 'irregularities'. At least eight people have been killed so far in recent post-election violence in Tehran.

[28 May 2012] \'West loses credibility on Syria\' - English Syria slams the wording of a United Nations Security Council statement on the recent massacre of civilians in the central town of Houla. Ja\'afari said the 15-nation council misinterpreted the words of the head of the UN mission in Syria, General Robert Mood. He was referring to a part in the statement that condemned the Syrian government for the artillery and tank shelling of a residential neighborhood in Houla. Ja\'afari said it was an interpretation of Western states such as Germany and the UK. He added that General Mood had said it was unclear how the mass killings had taken place and that the events needed to be investigated. The Security Council released the statement after an emergency session to discuss the Houla killings. Over one-hundred people were killed and three-hundred others wounded in the town on Friday.

New Zealand and its South Island city of Christchurch were struggling to get back to normal on Thursday, two days after an earthquake which killed at least 76 people, injured hundreds more. Police said up to 120 bodies may still be inside one of the buildings hardest hit by New Zealand's devastating earthquake. That number is not included in the official death toll of 76, which is based on the bodies recovered and brought to a temporary morgue in the stricken city of Christchurch.

Despite a cautious calm following two days of warfare, life was far from normal in the neighborhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab -Al-Tabaneh. Most shops remain closed and tensions remain high between the Allawite pro-Syrian and Sunni anti-Syrian neighborhoods. With each side blaming the other for instigating the violence, sectarianism has reached its peak and hence the worse is probably yet to come.

[11 July 2012] Al Saud tries to scare Sunni population - English Tens of thousands of Saudi Arabian protesters have held a demonstration against the Al Saud regime in the Qatif region of oil-rich Eastern Province. The protester chanted slogans against the Al Saud regime, calling for its downfall. The mass rally comes a few days after Saudi forces killed at least three protesters in the region. The oil-rich eastern province has been the scene of protests after the forceful detention of a prominent Shia cleric. Sheikh Nemr al-Nemr was wounded in an attack on his car and then arrested by Saudi forces. The Eastern Province has been the epicenter of anti-regime protests since last year. The protesters demand the release of political prisoners and social justice. Press TV has conducted an interview with Ali Al Ahmed, director of the Institute for [Persian] Gulf Affairs (IGA) in Washington, to further discuss the issue.

[30 May 2012] 'NATO behind Houla massacre' - English The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has said that most of the civilian victims of last week's massacre in the Syrian town of Houla were executed. Over 100 civilians were killed in a massacre in the western town of Houla on May 25. Meanwhile, a number of Western governments have recalled their ambassadors and high-ranking diplomats from Syria in protest to the killing of at least 108 people. The Syrian government says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country and that security forces have been given clear instructions not to harm civilians. Saudi attack on Yemen condemned in Toronto: Peace and justice loving Canadians have not been swayed by the nasty propaganda of the Saudi regime and its supporters in the west that their attack on Yemen is justified. Instead, hundreds of people braved strong winds to denounce the illegitimate Saudi regime for its equally illegitimate war on the poor people of Yemen. There were also demands to put the Saudi rulers on trial for war crimes. Chanting slogans against the Banu Saud as well as their masters in Washington DC, the protesters demanded an immediate halt to attacks on the Yemeni people that have killed more than 2,600 civilians so far. They also demanded that humanitarian aid be provided to the people of whom more than 120,000 (according to UN figures) have been displaced from their homes since the Saudis and their allies launched their war of aggression on March 26. There were also repeated calls for putting Saudi rulers on trial for war crimes since Yemen has not attacked Saudi Arabia. Further, it is not the people of Yemen that have attacked Saudi Arabia, but the illegitimate regime of the Najdi Bedouins that has attacked the poorest Arab country in the region. Speakers included Ken Stone from the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War, Sid Lacombe of the Canadian Peace Alliance, Dave Mckwee of the Toronto Coalition to the Stop the War, Zafar Bangash Director Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought and Maulana Zaki Bakri of Al Mahdi Centre.
