Concerned about the devastation currently being inflicted on the people of Lebanon and Palestine by the Israeli Military Forces and with the very limited and biased reporting on these conflicts presented by most American media networks - students organized a teach-in on the UC Berkeley campus in order to give students faculty and the Bay Area community at large achance to gain a greater understanding of these events and to participate in an open discussion on their significance for both Americans and the people of the Middle East. During the first hour of this two-hour event four scholars with expertise in the Middle East presented short analyses - 15 minutes each - of the historical and political dimensions of this conflict focusing on the following themes. 1. The role US foreign policy has played in enabling and authorizing the Israeli bombardment 2. The origins and historical development of Hezbollah and the role of this movement within Lebanese social and political arenas 3. The shifting political alignments within Israel and their relation to the current war on Lebanon and to Israels role in the region more broadly 4. The impact of Israeli military actions in Gaza and the West Bank on the lives of Palestinians and the political landscape of the Palestinian society. The presentations were followed by audience questions and comments which is what this video is about. Speakers in the first part included Judith Butler Beshara Doumani Charles Hirschkind Saba Mahmood Zeina Zaatari The teach-in took place on September 7th 2006. Saudi attack on Yemen condemned in Toronto: Peace and justice loving Canadians have not been swayed by the nasty propaganda of the Saudi regime and its supporters in the west that their attack on Yemen is justified. Instead, hundreds of people braved strong winds to denounce the illegitimate Saudi regime for its equally illegitimate war on the poor people of Yemen. There were also demands to put the Saudi rulers on trial for war crimes.
Chanting slogans against the Banu Saud as well as their masters in Washington DC, the protesters demanded an immediate halt to attacks on the Yemeni people that have killed more than 2,600 civilians so far.
They also demanded that humanitarian aid be provided to the people of whom more than 120,000 (according to UN figures) have been displaced from their homes since the Saudis and their allies launched their war of aggression on March 26.
There were also repeated calls for putting Saudi rulers on trial for war crimes since Yemen has not attacked Saudi Arabia.
Further, it is not the people of Yemen that have attacked Saudi Arabia, but the illegitimate regime of the Najdi Bedouins that has attacked the poorest Arab country in the region.
Speakers included Ken Stone from the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War, Sid Lacombe of the Canadian Peace Alliance, Dave Mckwee of the Toronto Coalition to the Stop the War, Zafar Bangash Director Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought and Maulana Zaki Bakri of Al Mahdi Centre.
Protest Rally was organized by the Canadian Peace Alliance and Toronto Coalition to Stop the war and supported by many Christian, Jewish and Islamic groups.

Husayn Day: Beacon of Unity
Press Release
Husayn Day Exemplifies Muslim Unity in Houston:
Houston, TX – Dec 07, 2013, Muslims from all factions of society came together to promote the cause of unity and brotherhood amongst the believers, by drawing lessons from the sacrifices of Imam Husayn (as); the grandson of the last Prophet, Mohammad (saw), a mercy upon the mankind.
The annual Husayn day was organized and sponsored by Islamic Education Center (IEC) Houston and supported by prominent Muslim organizations of Houston including but not limited Makkah Masjid Dairy Ashford, Muslim Council of USA, Buzm-e-Mustafa, Minhaj-ul-Quran, Markazi Tanzeem-e-Imamia, Dar-e-Abbas, Ali School, Azadar-e-Husayn, Scouts of Islam, CAIR, ACT, et al. Each participating institution in itself plays a significant role in bridging social disparities and promoting unity, harmony, tolerance and justice amongst the community at large.
The event packed with mesmerizing Qir’at, beautiful poetry, thought provoking lectures exemplified that Imam Husayn’s (as) sacrifice continues to be the spring source for unity and global reforms against oppression and injustice.
Moulana Wahidi and Qari Hamdani mesmerized the gathering with awe-inspiring Qir’at.
Speakers stresses that more opportunities like Husayn Day should be organized collaboratively to actuate awareness, harmony and cooperative environment in the community, and expel the views spread by Takfiri’s and other agencies of hatred and sectarianism.
During the program Salat ul Asr with Jamat was performed, lead by Moulana Shabbiri and attended by all the Muslim participants.
In the opening note, resident Aalim of IEC Moulana Shabbiri emphasized on the principles of Islam extensively shared by Muslims across the globe. Muslims must pay attention that we all believe in the Tawheed, Qur\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'an and Prophethood and should work together to serve Allah (swt) by emulating the footsteps of Prophet (saw), his infallible progeny and trusted companions. He further highlighted that the insignificant theological differences acts as exploitation tools in hands of dividing agencies. Muslims must avoid division and embrace brotherhood to defeat the common enemies of Islam. He said that Today\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s Jihad is to establish unity with in Muslim Ummah because enemies of Islam all are gathered to create fitna of disunity. Also he said that Movement of Imam Husayn is one of the foundation for the unity, and today\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s program is not only a program but it’s a movement to establish unity within Muslim community in Houston specifically and Muslims in North America.
Moulana Awaisi resident Aalim of Makkah Masjid stressed on Qur’anic teachings that regardless of theological orientations, all Muslims, Shia or Sunni, shall embrace brotherhood to fail divisive plots of external enemies.
Br. Afeef khan, an eloquent intellectual, highlighted how ignorance and absence of public mindset is weakening Muslims and acting as an apparatus for exploitation by oppressive political powers. We must take lessons from Imam Husayn (as) on how to confront such oppressors and remain steadfast to sacrifice everything for truth and righteousness.
Similarly, Dr. Butt, a prominent intellectual, shared his views that our common goal must be to help each other in attaining pleasure of Allah (swt) and this should be a sufficient call for Muslims to come together.
Br. Mustapha Carol, Executive Director of CAIR, articulated that civil liberties and social justice would prevail, if Muslims stand fortified for the common causes and become active on socio-political fronts.
Researcher and scholar Moulana Shamshad Haider elaborated that the Islamic principles are based on humanity so one should act as human in order to be a Muslim.
Revered poets, Ayaz Mufti and Zafar Taqvi blessed the gathering with beautiful and thought provoking poetry. The program concluded with Salat-al-Jamat and a community dinner for all attendees.
The organizers are grateful to the community of Greater Houston, Media Partners, and participating agencies who showed such interest and cooperation in making the program successful.
This program was highly appreciated by the scholars and participants and they insisted to hold programs geared towards the unity of Muslims in the Houston.

Cultural Organization in Baghadhas organized a conference to protest against the US-produced film with a negative depiction of the holy Prophet of Islam.
It was attended by ordinary citizens, officials, tribal leaders and clerics.
They also warn about the aims of the makers of such insulting film.
The film has sparked harsh reactions in Muslim world and across the world.
People here say only such trends could come to an end only through spreading Islamic awakening across the world.

Charles Hirschkind sheds light on the utility of the war on terror for the US empire. He argues that - instead of targeting Al-Qaeda - the war on terror is more focused on targeting anti-imperial movements in certain Muslim countries and protecting pro-US dictatorial regimes. In a cautious tone he also emphasizes the importance of understanding the context in which violent tactics of certain resistance organizations should be understood. The viewer may not agree with everything he has to say. I for one do not. But there are some useful insights that we can surely appreciate. Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani talks about his latest book on the Darfur Conflict and the shady Save Darfur movement. His book is called SAVIORS AND SURVIVORS. The talk was at UNCA. In this clip Mamdani argues that 20 to 30 percent died from direct violence. Others died because of independent causes like desertification and drought which actually preceded the conflict. The cause of violence was the civil war in Darfur and the insurgency and counter-insurgency - all with separate origins and causes. The third consideration was the Cold War which involved America France Israel on one side and on the other Libya and Soviet Union. Each side armed different sides in the civil war in Chad. In Darfur the Chad opposition organized itself and launched assaults on Chad.

Beshara Doumani addresses the question WHY CANT THEY GET ALONG? The answer according to him - they cant along because of decades long dispossession of one group by another which has only intensified recently. Using a number of anecdotal examples he argues that the arrogance of Israelis is responsible for the violence - the failure of many international interventions for peace - and the ongoing plight of the Palestinian people. He seems to believe in the two state solution - and was subsequently questioned on that in the QnA session. The clip is from a Berkeley Teach-in organized in Sep 2006. Surrey Islamic Society hosted a talk on Islam and The Media on Day Two of its Islamic Awareness Week 2011. This is the Question & Answer session.
Talk by Anas Altikriti and Lauren Booth
Lauren Booth is an English broadcaster, journalist and pro-Palestinian activist. She works for Iran's English language news channel, Press TV.In August 2008 she travelled to Gaza by ship from Cyprus, along with 46 other activists, to highlight the blockade of the Gaza Strip and deliver hearing aids and balloons to a deaf school in Gaza. Booth elected to remain behind in Gaza, and was subsequently refused entry into both Israel and Egypt. She said that she believed that, by refusing her the right to leave Gaza and return to her home country, Israel and Egypt were in breach of Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, specifically regarding freedom of movement.
Anas Altikriti is President and founder of the Cordoba Foundation. A leading figure in the British Anti-War movement, Altikriti also served as president of the Muslim Association of Britain between 2004 and 2005.
Altikriti holds an MSc in Translation and Interpreting. He teaches translation and interpreting on part-time basis at Leeds University. He headed the Respect Yorkshire and Humberside slate for the European elections in 2004.
Altikriti organised more than twenty major demonstrations including the demonstration against the Iraq war organized in London on February 15, 2003. He was also special envoy to Iraq to negotiate the release of Western hostages. As a commentator in the International and Arab media (e.g. BBC, CNN, ABC, SKY, Al-Jazeera, etc.) on Muslim and current affairs, he has appeared on HARDtalk and the Doha Debates (both with Tim Sebastian), 'Lateline' on Australian ABC and BBC's Newsnight as well as a number of prominent programs on a variety of international channels. Altikriti has contributed a number of articles to The Guardian, Al-Ahram Weekly and Islam Online.
