It has been 30 years since the US undertook Operation Eagle Claw - a failed military mission to rescue 52 diplomats and embassy staff taken hostage in Iran.
About 90 commandoes, eight helicopters and six aircraft landed in the Iranian desert on the first stage of the mission, but an accident resulted in the deaths of eight soldiers and it was called off.
The hostage crisis lasted for another year after "divine intervention", as some Iranians say, stopped Eagle Claw.
The anniversary comes amid rising tensions between the US and Iran.

A group of young Venezuelan-Egyptians took over the Egyptian embassy in solidarity with the widespread protests that have swept the Middle Eastern country in recent days and reportedly left after speaking with Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro.
Although the protest was at first peaceful, it turned violent when the security guards of the embassy tried to intervene. When reached for comment, they embassy officials refused to talk to Press TV.
President Hugo Chavez also said on the state TV, quote, "“They wanted to protest, but they shouldn't have done that because we are obliged to protect all of the embassies, which are sovereign territory.”
After a quick intervention of Venezuelan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nicolas Maduro, demonstrators agreed to leave the embassy. Nevertheless they
said they will organize more actions until President Hosni Mubarak leaves Egypt.

On a peaceful day in front of the White House there was a group focused on US aggression of nuclear proportions.
Nearly 30 years ago William "Doubting" Thomas started the White House Anti-Nuclear Peace Vigil. He died in 2009. But since then, his supporters such as “Concepcion” who's a fixture here--have been carrying out his legacy of urging the US government to redefine its nuclear development and nuclear aggression against other countries.
Thomas' widow Ellen says more nuclear weapons don't make the population safer.
The vigil in front of the white house couldn't come at a more poignant time. With nuclear reactor failures in Japan after a massive earthquake and the us participation of strikes over Libya after a un-mandated no-fly zone, activists say the us government is headed in the wrong direction regarding nuclear development and military activity.

The NATO strike that hit a pro-democracy convoy outside of the eastern town of Brega killing at least 10 people may have been a mistake.
Although the population in the country's east is prepared to forgive the mistake, there is less sympathy is other parts of Libya.
Such incidents may have just given Muammar Gaddafi's spokespeople propaganda ammunition.
