Syrian forces recapture more than half of a strategic city near the border with Lebanon. Some are describing this and similar advances as a game-changer that will eventually lead to an end to more than two years of a deadly insurgency against President Bashar al Assad.
As the US and Russia agree on a peace conference, others are asking can peace talks work as long as terrorists from all over the world continue to operate within Syrian soil.
Reports of the discovery of Israeli-made equipment have also raised questions on the extent of cooperation between the insurgents, regional Arab states and Tel Aviv.

The city of Detroit, Michigan made headlines last month when police reported that there were 13 people shot in 24 hours. But other cities in the US are also starting to see an increase in violent crime. The surge in violence comes as the FBI releases figures that indicate that the crimes are part of a nationwide trend. The FBI figures suggest the overall increase in violence is due to a surge in crimes committed in larger cities-- after six years of steady declines. Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assaults. Nationally, those crime rates have edged up 1.2 percent year-over-year, according to the FBI\'s Preliminary Annual Uniform Crime Report. The largest increases happened in cities with populations of between 500,000 and one million people. This is where violent crime rose by 3.7 percent, including a 12.5 percent spike in murder rates.

Most Gazans suffer from food insecurity due to several years of Israeli blockade. Impoverishment has increased the level of food insecurity in Gaza which is home to one point seven million people. Tel-Aviv is not only maintaining a tight air, sea and land blockade but it also prevents farmers in Gaza from farming vast swathes of land in the so-called buffer zone.

To join or not to join the EU? That is a question facing Ukraine. Although in need of financial assistance, its president Viktor Yanukovych has not signed the Association Agreement.
In this debate, we\'ll discuss why the EU is so keen to have Ukraine in its neighborhood, the role that Russia has in all this, and ultimately what is best for Ukraine, as thousands have been protesting FOR and AGAINST signing the agreement:
Will this divide Ukraine and ultimately force its president out of power?

Israel\'s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is under fire by Israeli media for squandering public money on a posh lifestyle.
Reports of Netanyahu\'s plush items of interest come at a time when Tel Aviv is facing tough austerity measures. In a detailed document released by a civil liberties group, Netanyahu\'s alleged expenses on fancy whim-wham, including scented candles, flowers and ice cream, exceeded 900-thousand dollars in 2013 alone. Israelis have long been weary of Netanyahu\'s lavish lifestyle, and his failure to address the middle class\'s economic woes. Activists have held several large rallies to protest Tel Aviv\'s economic policies. Netanyahu\'s office has responded by saying that this year, they\'ve spent less than last year.

American soldiers who have returned home from the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are facing tough challenges.
The Department of Veterans Affairs says, last year nearly 50,000 of the veterans were either homeless or in a federal program aimed at keeping them off the streets. High rate of unemployment and post traumatic stress disorder among the veterans have raised the rate of suicide among them. A large number of US troopers who were deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan come from the lower class. They were promised a better future by the department of defense. Long costly wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have failed to end militancy in the two countries.

Reports from the camp say people have started hunting cats, dogs and donkeys. This is while foreign-backed insurgents are still holed up inside, and government forces keep fighting to force them out. Reports say seventy-eight people, including 25 women and three children, have died as a result of food shortage there. Syria has been gripped by a foreign-backed insurgency for nearly three years now.

So the \\\'Quick-Paced to Success Quintet\\\' was back from Arbaeen, and life just kept on going as usual.
But the girls who embarked upon following the footsteps of lady Zaynab (A) seemed to be facing some trials and difficulties in each one of their lives.
What kinds of problems were they facing; problems that most of us face in our lives?
And how did lady Zaynab (A) help them to be able to overcome the natural trials and tribulations that they were facing?
Finally, what is a kind of attitude that we must all adopt in our lives; an attitude and outlook that was taught to us by her eminence, lady Zaynab (A)?
Sister Fatima talks with her friends how \\\"Lady Zaynab (A) Taught Me To Always Be Positive\\\" in this last episode in ode to lady Zaynab bint Ali (A), the princess that continues to brink people out of darkness and into the light, even after the passing of over a thousand years.
Our condolences to the believers, wherever you are, upon the recent martyrdom anniversary and Arbaeen of Imam Husayn (A), his honorable family members, and his devoted companions.
Salutations be upon the Master of Martyrs!
Salutations be upon the esteemed Husayn!
Salutations be upon the esteemed Ali ibn Husayn!
Salutations be upon the innocent children of Husayn!
Salutations be upon the loyal companions of Husayn!

That will be the conclusion of this topic.
What happens when these people are facing the army of Iblis? When these people are facing the enemies of God, as it said in the other verse. What\'s going on? They do not need weapons, there\'s no need for weapons in this story.
These people, their only weapon is science. And the science they have, do you know what it does? It does that in front of them, when they walk, fear walks before them. And that fear penetrates the hearts of the enemies of God. It is terrible.

How have the tables turned in the equation between the oppressive Zionist regime and the Palestinians?
What was the distinctive feature of the battle of Saif al-Quds?
And why did the other Palestinian groups not enter the battlefield this time?
Furthermore, how did the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group put the – apparently well-equipped and powerful – israeli army to shame?
And what is the difference between when they are facing other conventional militaries and when they are facing the Jihadi groups?
Major-general Husayn Salami speaks about the changing power dynamics between the illegal Zionist regime and the Palestinian resistance groups.

What happened to the world after the Industrial Revolution?
In what aspects of the world are we facing imbalance and why is that so?
And what is the imperialist-capitalist system doing to the natural resources of the world?
What is the fundamental reason that secular governments are not able to fix the problems of the world, even though they say that they are trying to?
What will the living Imam (A), the Imam (A) of our Time do, vis-à-vis the painful and extreme disbalance that the world is facing?
Finally, what will happen to the rains of the world with the advent of the Qaem (A), and what does Imam Ali (A) say about this?
Sister Spade explains and answers these questions and more, based upon selections from the book, The Essence of Creation, 3rd edition, as she speaks about \"Bringing Balance to the Natural World\".
It\'s time to pray for the advent of the 12th divinely appointed Imam (A), for only then can the natural world be brought back to balance.

Has humanity been able to solve its problems in the present-day?
And despite the technological advancements of this era, have the fundamental problems of humanity decreased or increased?
And are the problems and crises of the modern era rooted merely in \\\'ignorance\\\'?
Are the problems that the modern world is facing similar to those of the \\\'Age of Ignorance\\\'; and if so, in what manner are they similar?
What was the solution for the problems of the \\\'Age of Ignorance\\\'?
Does the Western world or the Eastern world have the solutions to our problems?
What are just a few of the Fitnahs that the Muslims are suffering from in the present-day? What do the oppressors do to other nations in the name of democracy? What do the materialists do to our women in the name of fashion?
Finally, what are some statements by the Messenger of Allah (S) that can help us to navigate through the modern day Fitnahs and seditions that the Muslims and humanity on the whole is facing?
Shaheed Arif al-Husayni answers in his simple, yet magnetic manner, as he speaks about \\\"The Ultimate Solution To Our Problems\\\" and how we must all seek refuge from Fitnah with the Holy Qur\\\'an.

As Iran witnesses an unprecedented turnout in its closely-fought presidential election, the polling time is extended to accommodate the massive lines of voters.
The Interior Ministry announced that the polling time has been extended to 9 p.m. local time.
Our correspondent Gisoo Misha Ahmadi who is stationed at the ministry reported that polling stations have been ordered to remain open until further notice due to the massive electoral turnout.
Tens of millions of Iranians have crowded to the polls to take part in the election in which the incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad seeks a second term in office while facing a strong challenge from former prime minister Mir-Hossein Moussavi.
After weeks of intense campaigns, turnout appears to be extraordinarily high, with polling stations packed all day.
Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli said that the turnout would be above 70 percent -- a new record.
Kamran Daneshjoo, the head of the country's electoral committee, had earlier promised to put in place a strategy to ensure "maximum participation" from the 46.2 million eligible -- aged 18 and above -- voters.
Two-time parliament Speaker Mehdi Karroubi (1989-1992 and 2000-2004) and Expediency Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei are also battling for office in the crucial election.
If no candidate gets absolute majority of votes in the first round, the two front-runners will face a run-off vote on June 19

Gaza Photo Expo Threatened with Closure - 16Feb2010 - English

On Monday, Feb. 15th, Cinema du Parc received an email insisting that CJPME's Photo Exposition, Human Drama in Gaza, be immediately removed from the Cinema. The email was from a legal representative of Gestion Redbourne PDP Inc., the owners of the building housing Cinema du Parc. The Cinema has hosted dozens of expositions in the past three years, and this is the first time that such action has been taken. This move on the part of Redbourne seems entirely political, to muzzle the message of Human Drama in Gaza.
If you live outside Montreal, click here (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1103051037264&s=16948&e=001lbx5DoOzK2lQ2AkszhAXAcw77yHdCXtCL8T0qJpd4L_1Nbb17CtbwXJvymCoHeOkYqGvkWUSWVEuH0gY0YTHWYo2RySXVSbYQdNd_gXJkkyFSlO25c9M2C6OBYbWHHnXJVQatP5EzstlidTU5Qk2fQ==) to protest this action.
On Monday, Feb. 15th, the critically acclaimed Human Drama in Gaza
Photo Exposition in Montreal was threatened with closure by Gestion Redbourne PDP Inc., the real
estate management firm owning the property housing the Exposition. A legal representative of
Redbourne, Lieba Shell, sent an email late in the day to the exposition host, Cinema du Parc,
ordering the removal of the exposition and threatening legal action if the exposition were not taken
down by evening. Cinema du Parc and Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East
(CJPME) – the producer of the exposition – asserted through their legal advisor, Mark H. Arnold,
that such threats from Redbourne were not lawful.
Human Drama in Gaza was launched in mid-January, and received very positive reviews in several
media. Redbourne, however, demanded the removal of the exposition based on a paragraph in the
lease that Cinema du Parc has with Redbourne relating to “purely cinemagraphic use” of the
premises. Arnold, however, asserted that the cinema’s hosting of a photo exposition would very
much constitute cinemagraphic use of the premises. Officials with Cinema du Parc also pointed out
that the cinema has hosted dozens of photo expositions in the past several years, and has never had
a complaint from Redbourne, the landlord.
“This move on the part of Redbourne is clearly political,” declared Thomas Woodley, President of
CJPME. “Cinema du Parc is known for its ongoing expositions which touch on important issues of
social concern, and Redbourne never had an issue in the past.” Last week, both Cinema du Parc
and Place du Parc (the shopping mall housing the cinema and owned by Redbourne) received
emails and calls from individuals unhappy with the Human Drama in Gaza exposition. The
complaints accused the exposition of being anti-Israel, but stopped short of questioning the
credibility of the exposition content. “The suffering of the 1.5 million people of Gaza is an
important social issue like any other,” asserted Woodley. “The fact that certain people wish to stifle
open discussion on Gaza is even more a reason to bring the debate out into the open.”
According to CJPME, the exposition itself seeks to put a human face to the misery of the people of
Gaza, and the poignant resilience of a people facing severe adversity. The captions accompanying
the photos cite statistics and legal analyses of Israel’s 22-day assault on Gaza of last winter. The
legal advisor to CJPME pointed out that if security forces from Redbourne were to attempt to
forcibly remove the exposition, they would be considered trespassers. As such, Arnold concluded,
the “Cinema staff have been advised to immediately call the police.”
About CJPME – Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) is a non-profit and secular
organization bringing together men and women of all backgrounds who labour to see justice and peace take
root again in the Middle East. Its mission is to empower decision-makers to view all sides with fairness and to

Produced by CJPME, and funded through private donations, the Montreal stop at Cinema du Parc is the first in a series of cross-Canada shows.
The Montreal Exposition began on Friday, Jan. 15th and was originally scheduled to continue through through Sunday, February 28th. The Exposition is open from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 3:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. on weekends. Ireland expels israeli diplomat over Hamas assassination - English

DUBLIN (AP) -- Ireland announced Tuesday it's expelling an Israeli diplomat in punishment for the Mossad use of forged Irish passports to assassinate a top Hamas official in Dubai.
israel has refused to confirm or deny its agents' involvement in the January slaying of Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. Dubai police said Israeli agents posing as holidaymakers in the oil-rich Arab emirate killed Mabhouh in his hotel room.
They said assassins using 32 fake passports — including eight depicting fictional Irish citizens — participated in the hit squad. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Ireland's national police force, the Garda Siochana, launched parallel investigations, but said their appeals for information from Israel fell on deaf ears.
"The misuse of Irish passports by a state with which Ireland enjoys friendly, if sometimes frank, bilateral relations is clearly unacceptable and requires a firm response," Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin said as he announced the expulsion.
Ireland's two investigations received no cooperation from the Israelis, but nevertheless reached "the inescapable conclusion that an Israeli government agency was responsible," he said.
The Israeli embassy in Dublin includes four diplomats and two security officials. Both Ireland and Israel declined to identify the official facing expulsion by name or position, but The Irish Times reported it was one of the security officials.
Martin said the official was chosen for expulsion to send a symbolic message, and the Irish investigations found no evidence that any of the embassy staff was involved in the conspiracy.
"The official concerned is not accused or suspected of any particular wrongdoing," Martin said. "The official concerned is a victim of the actions of the state they represent."
Martin condemned Israel's assassination of Mabhouh.
"Many allegations have been made against Mr. Mabhouh which, if true, would categorize him as a committed terrorist," Martin said. But Ireland "does not believe that states should fight terror with terror. As a matter of principle, Ireland opposes extra-judicial killings. We believe that states have a duty to operate according to the law and to respect that way of life that terrorists seek to destroy."
Martin's aides said this was the first time Ireland has expelled an Israeli official. It last took such action in the mid-1980s against Russian officials suspected of spying activity on behalf of the former Soviet Union.
Israel's ambassador to Ireland, Zion Evrony, said he was summoned Tuesday to the Department of Foreign Affairs to be told of the expulsion.
Earlier this month Israeli commandos seized an Irish-run vessel trying to run aid into Gaza Port. All the Irish citizens aboard, including former UN humanitarian official Denis Halliday and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire, were arrested and deported.
The Dubai assassins also used fake passports from Britain, Germany, France and Australia. British officials determined that Israeli officials stole the identities of real British citizens, but Martin said all eight Irish passports involved fake identities. He said six of the forged Irish passports used real numbers assigned to real Irish people with different names, while two others were total fabrications.
Australia expelled an Israeli diplomat May 24 after concluding that Mossad was involved in forging four Australian passports.
Britain expelled an Israeli diplomat in March after reaching the same conclusion about 12 fraudulent British passports used by the alleged assassins.
The governments of France and Germany have yet to announce conclusions of their own investigations.
