The most painful moments of human history. It is difficult to listen to and relate the incidents which occurred on the 10th of Muharram (Ashura) in the land of Karbala. Imam Husayn (A), the grandson of the Holy Prophet (S), was brutally slaughtered like a sheep under the open skies by despicable individuals. This series is based on the authentic sources and Maqtals from Lahoof.
“Muharram is such a month that the Arabs of the age of ignorance (pre-Islamic) too respected its sanctity and forbade oppression and blood-shed in it. But these people (the Umayyads) did not honor the sanctity of this month nor of their Prophet. In this month, they killed the son of the Prophet and imprisoned the women-folk after looting and plundering their belongings, verily Allah will never ever forgive this crime of theirs.”…

Munajat e Sha’baniyya is the whispered Prayer of Ameerul Momineen Ali ibn Abu Talib (as) which he would recite in the month of Sha’ban as a preparation to the blessed and sacred month of Ramadhan.
This supplication was narrated by Ibn Khalawayh and is mentioned by Abbas Qummi in Mafatih al-Jinan and Sayyed Ibn Tawus in Iqbal al-A’mal.
In the supplication, Imam Ali (as) emphasizes Allah\'s generosity and addresses Allah swt as creator and infinite. Imam Ali (as) advised that the Du\'a be recited with presence of heart.
All Imams (as) after Imam Ali (as) recited this Munajat, and Imam Sajjad (as) invoked it every day in the month of Sha\'ban at sunset and also in the night of 15th Sha\'ban, the night of the birth of Imam Mahdi (atfs).

UN official Enough evidence to prosecute Rumsfeld - English. Monday, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak told CNN's Rick Sanchez that the US has an "obligation" to investigate whether Bush administration officials ordered torture, adding that he believes that there is already enough evidence to prosecute former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.
"We have clear evidence," he said. "In our report that we sent to the United Nat More..ions, we made it clear that former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld clearly authorized torture methods and he was told at that time by Alberto Mora, the legal council of the Navy, 'Mr. Secretary, what you are actual ordering here amounts to torture.' So, there we have the clear evidence that Mr. Rumsfeld knew what he was doing but, nevertheless, he ordered torture."
Asked during an interview with Germany's ZDF television on Jan. 20, Nowak said: "I think the evidence is on the table."
At issue, however, is whether "American law will recognize these forms of torture."
A bipartisan Senate report released last month found Rumsfeld and other top administration officials responsible for abuse of Guantanamo detainees in US custody.
It said Rumsfeld authorized harsh interrogation techniques on December 2, 2002 at the Guantanamo prison, although he ruled them out a month later.
The coercive measures were based on a document signed by Bush in February, 2002.

On the first Friday prayers in Ramadan, the Muslim Holy Month, thousands of Palestinians flocked towards the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem to attend prayers.
But, as is often the case, many were not allowed inside to pray.
Israeli authorities have put restrictions on who can attend prayers at the holy site, but they say they are trying to accommodate as many worshippers as possible.
Special permits are available but just for women between the ages of 30 and 45 and men between 45 and 50.
Palestinian officials say that such restrictive measures do not respect the sanctity of the month.

Israeli PM rebuffs settlement freeze
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again rejected calls to extend a partial freeze on settlement activities in the occupied territories.
"The prime minister has not changed his position on this issue, there is no question of extending the moratorium," an unnamed Israeli official told AFP on Friday.
Last week, US President Barack Obama said it would make sense for Tel Aviv to extend the 10-month moratorium during its direct talks with the Palestinian Authority.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged Tel Aviv on Thursday to extend the deadline, which expires at the end of this month.
"Where we sit now it would be useful for some extension, it would be extremely useful," Clinton said.
Meanwhile, the European Union said that the settlements are "illegal under international law" and called for an "extension of the moratorium decided by Israel."
Acting Palestinian Authority Chief Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to leave the negotiations if Israel resumes its settlement activities in the occupied West Bank and East al-Quds (Jerusalem).
According to Palestinians, Israel's insistence of the continuation of settlement projects would be a major obstacle to the establishment of a viable Palestinian state.

The first day of the lunar month of Shawaal marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, which is celebrated by Muslims as the Eid-ul-Fitr or the feast of fast- breaking worldwide.
In capital Tehran, massive crowds of people gathered at University of Tehran and surrounding areas to perform the Eid prayer, which is traditionally led by the Leader of Iran\\\'s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
Since Eid Al-Fitr and its special prayers is an occasion for Muslims to forget further unity, leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has waned Muslims of a plot to sow division among the Islamic Ummah.
Ayatollah Khamenei also said Islam\\\'s enemies are using sophisticated tools to achieve their goals. He also hailed the public for the massive turnout on the International al-Quds Day across the world. He said the occasion keeps the Palestinian cause alive and will have significant implications for the future of the Muslim world.

The Holy month of Ramadan is a month in which Muslims are commanded to fast from dawn till dusk for the full 30 days.
The Quran states \"O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you just as it was prescribed for those before you. Perhaps you would attain piety!\" (Quran 2:183)
Thus for 30 days, the lifestyles of Muslims around the world change dramatically. But although its core purpose is spiritually based, there are many health and medical benefits and implications of fasting including giving rest to the digestive system, decrease of cholesterol level in blood, and moderate weight loss.
This week\'s Islam and Life asks: What are the benefits of fasting?

Sayyed Nasrallah: We, the Twelver Shia, Won\\\\\\\'t Abandon Palestine
Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah said on Friday that the demise of Israel is a national interest, stressing that the \\\\\\\"Shiite\\\\\\\" Hezbollah will continue to bear its responsibilities towards the Palestinian cause and Al-Quds.
In a live speech before crowds marking the International Al-Quds Day in Dahiyeh, Sayyed Nasrallah paid tribute to late Imam Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini who designated the last Friday in the holy month of Ramadan as Al-Quds Day, and said that people are in critical need to commemorate this day.
\\\\\\\"On the seventh of August 1979, meaning few months from the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Imam Khomeini issued a statement calling on all vulnerable peoples in the world to consider as Al-Quds Day the last Friday of the month of Ramadan, and this call was confirmed by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,\\\\\\\" Sayyed Nasrallah said. \\\\\\\"The goal of this call was to remind Muslims and the world of the Palestinian cause and benefit from this occasion to mobilize energies in order to save Al-Quds and Palestine from the hands of the Zionists and to highlight what Palestine and its people are suffering from starvation, Judaization and siege,\\\\\\\" He continued.
On the second of August 2013, we desperately need to commemorate the occasion, Sayyed Nasrallah said, pointing out that \\\\\\\"Palestine which we are talking about is the whole of Palestine from the sea to the river, which should return fully to its people no one of the world\\\\\\\'s Sheikh or Sayyed or Prince nor King or President or a government to give up or abandon one grain of sand from the soil of Palestine, or a drop of its water, oil, or a piece of its land and does not have a mandate to do so.\\\\\\\"
Demise of Israel a National Interest
\\\\\\\"Imam Khomeini had described Israel accurately when he called it a cancerous tumor, and it is really a tumor that kills, the only solution is to eradicate it without giving it any opportunity or surrender and eradicate,\\\\\\\" He said, emphasizing that \\\\\\\"Israel represents a constant and enormous threat not only on Palestine and the Palestinians, this is an illusion and misinformation and ignorance. Israel is a threat to all peoples and countries of the region, with its security and sovereignty and he who deny this is an arrogant.\\\\\\\"
\\\\\\\"Some might think that the demise of Israel is a Palestinian interest, it\\\\\\\'s rather a national interest of each country of the region, and it is a threat to Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon, thus the disappearance of Israel is a national Jordanian, Syrian, Egyptian and Lebanese interest,\\\\\\\" He said.

Pakistan continues to face the blow back of its decision to side with the United States in its so-called war on terror.
A new study shows that a 40 percent increase in terrorist attacks was witnessed in the country after new government took charge in May this year.
The report prepared by the Conflict Monitoring Center reveals that September was the deadliest month as 215 violent incidents were reported.
In those attacks as many as 284 people were killed and over 500 injured.
Pro-Taliban militants have stepped up attacks following a unanimous resolution passed by the country\'s main stream religious and political parties last month to hold talks with them.
The report also says that in the first nine months of 2013, more than 800 violent incidents were recorded in different parts of the country leaving over 2000 people dead and many more injured.
Majority of the public here in Pakistan believe that the country is facing increased number of terrorist attacks due to its alliance with the US.
Official figures indicate that as many as 50,000 Pakistanis including thousands of security personnel have lost their lives in violent incidents since 9/11 attacks.
The current Pakistani government is pushing for a peace deal with the pro-Taliban militants. But many critics here believe that it will be a huge challenge for the administration in Islamabad to achieve that objective if militants continue their attacks.

U-S President Barack Obama has told Congress his country should not impose new sanctions on Iran if it is serious in negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear energy program. Obama-- who has been speaking to reporters in his last press briefing of the year-- has refreshed his warnings that any new sanctions against Iran could derail the current diplomatic efforts to resolve the differences with Iran.
Obama says he understands why some U-S lawmakers want to \\\"look tough\\\" on Iran. But he says the U-S must give diplomacy a chance. Obama has further repeated threats that the U-S keeps all options on the table regarding Iran if it fails to comply to the terms of the nuclear deal that Tehran signed with the permanent members of the U-N Security Council plus Germany last month.
Obama says any alternative to the path of diplomacy toward Iran would have unintended consequences for the US. And he added that it would be in the interests of the American people to resolve the Iran issue diplomatically. Obama\\\'s remarks come a day after Congress put a bill on the floor to slap new sanctions on Iran if it breaches the terms of the nuclear deal reached in Geneva last month. The new sanctions would also force the U-S administration to support Israel militarily, diplomatically, and economically in the event Tel Aviv decided to launch an attack on Iran\\\'s nuclear sites.

[24 Dec 2013] Fears of Presidential Vacuum High in Lebanon - English

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman is urging rival political factions to ensure the needed quorum in parliament for the election of Lebanon\\\'s next president.Suleiman\\\'s six-year-term expires in May 2014 and is preceded by a two-month constitutional period.
Lebanon\\\'s first man has also kicked off talks with Lebanese rival factions in a bid to help Prime-Minister Designate \\\"Tammam Salam\\\" form a cabinet line-up prior to the two-month constitutional period. The cabinet line-up formation however has been in limbo for the past 9 months namely due to the Saudi-backed March 14 Bloc\\\'s boycott of parliamentary sessions citing Hezbollah\\\'s intervention in Syria as a pretext. The Saudi-backed March 14th Bloc is now calling for a neutral line-up while the Hezbollah-led March 8th is calling for an all-embracing cabinet while rejecting a De-Facto one. The proposal of a neutral cabinet has also been slammed by Lebanese Druze Leader Walid Jumblat who warned it would be a \\\"leap into the unknown\\\". Meanwhile, the Free Patriotic Movement has accused the March 14th Bloc of paving the way for a presidential vacuum through the continued boycott of parliamentary sessions dubbing the movement\\\'s obstruction of government institutions as part of instructions taken from their regional allies pre-Geneva II talks. The Free Patriotic Movement MP also highlighted what he described as an alarming pledge by Riyadh\\\'s ambassador to London who vowed continued military and financial support for the foreign-backed groups fighting in Syria even if Saudi Arabia goes it alone. The MP warned the March 14th Bloc of following their Saudi ally\\\'s footsteps as well. Though Lebanon\\\'s President has vowed a smooth transition of power rebuffing any attempt to extend his mandate, fears of a vacuum at the presidential post are simmering in Beirut for their grave consequences on Lebanon. Lebanese leaders are warning that the presidential vacuum added to the cabinet limbo would tow the country into security, political and constitutional chaos.

US Secretary of State John Kerry says Washington will continue to enforce the existing sanctions on Iran.
Kerry made the remarks at a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany. According to the US State Department, Kerry and Zarif discussed next month\'s meeting on the settlement of a dispute over Iran\'s nuclear energy program. Tehran reached a landmark agreement with the five permanent members of the Security Council plus Germany in November to limit its nuclear activities, in return for a partial sanctions relief from the West. Earlier this month, the International Atomic Energy Agency, certified that Tehran had stuck to its side of the deal, giving access to key nuclear installations and cutting back its enriched uranium stockpile.
