Thousands of Turkish Shia braved freezing temperatures to commemorate the death of Imam Hussein on the day of Ashura. They walked through Istanbul streets beating their chests as is the religious ritual to feel the suffering of Imam Hussein at Karbala.
The Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the commemorations this year, a first since his party came to power in 2002. Erdogan's message was one of unity between Shia and Sunni Muslims, he himself a follower of the Sunni hanife faith.
People here told us that although they were in mourning, the Prime Minister's message was one of hope.
The former Iranian Foreign Minister echoing this message by calling on Muslims to stand stead fast in the face of those who want to spread havoc in the Islamic world.
This perhaps a reference to the latest attack in Iran. An attack the Turkish prime minister strongly condemned.
Every year, Turkish Shia reenact the battle of Kerbala as is their tradition, however blood letting is forbidden here.
Turkish Shia perform their religious duty by donating blood to the Turkish red crescent.
Ashura is an important day on the Shia calendar, and this year it was also acknowledged by Turkey's Sunni leadership.

Chaired by David Ignatius Associate Editor and Columnist The Washington Post USA the 2009 World Economic Forum is also a Forum for Israel to express their thoughts regarding the recent conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Recep Tayyip Erdogan Prime Minister of Turkey had some words for Shimon Peres after Peres had a 25 minute speech about Gaza sadly Recep was only allowed one minute. Seems odd other people are allowed speech time but hey I am sure the Washington Post is not biased. Amre Moussa Secretary General League of Arab States Cairo Shimon Peres President of Israel had to listen as the Turkish PM got off a few short words regarding the situation there and briefly talked about the children dying.

Ever since the war on Gaza in late 2008, Turks have openly sided with Palestinians and have been extremely critical of Israeli military operations and it's blockade on Gaza.
Turkish protesters marched to the Israeli consulate in Istanbul to mark "Nakba Day", the annual commemoration of the displacement of Palestinian people after Israel evicted them from their territories and homes in 1948.
In that year, an estimated 700,000 Palestinians were displaced as hundreds of villages were destroyed, something these protesters say can not be ignored.

Thirteen people have reportedly been killed in a bomb attack on a Pakistan-based hospital which was receiving the Shia casualties from an earlier explosion.
The bomb ripped through the Jinnah hospital in the Pakistan's largest city, Karachi on Friday, injuring scores of people. "This happened in front of the emergency ward of," spokesman for the provincial government Jameel Soomro was quoted by the AFP as saying.
The blast occurred as the hospital was receiving the wounded from an earlier attack in which a bomber had targeted a bus packed with Shia mourners.
Twelve people died and dozens other were injured among the group of pilgrims marking the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH).
The hospital attack was followed by a second attack which was unsuccessful, Reuters reported.
Senior police officer Ghulam Nabi Memon said that law enforcement agents "successfully defused" a bomb in the premises of the hospital.
In December 2009, a deadly attack on an Ashura procession claimed the lives of nearly 50 people.
Over the past two years, some 3,000 people have died in bomb attacks and other militant operations throughout Pakistan.

Turkey vows retaliation and Russia calls for restraint.
On this edition of News Analysis we look at two apparently opposing camps on the Syrian unrest, will possible plans for a full-scale military intervention give diplomacy a chance on Syria?
