Japan revises down its growth rate as the economy slows down more than the government initially estimated for the third quarter of 2013.
Tokyo had initially predicted a 0.5 percent growth for the three months to September, but now it has revised it down to 0.3. This as, in the previous quarter, the east Asian country had seen a 0.9 percent growth. Many say the downward revision is mostly due to a downturn in corporate capital spending. Japan is the world\'s third largest economy.

China has condemned Japan for criticizing its new air identification defense zone amid an escalating war of words between the two neighbors.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said the flight zone over a group of disputed islands in the East China Sea violates the freedom of aviation over the high seas and should be canceled. But China has once again defended the move-- saying Abe is using the situation to QUOTE maliciously slander Beijing. The Chinese Foreign Ministry says the establishment of the zone is in line with international laws and does not affect aviation freedom. Tensions have been running high between the two Asian powerhouses in the past year over the Japanese-controlled archipelago. Both countries have scrambled jets and carried out patrols in the area.

[20 Dec 2013] Comment - China raps US over China Sea meddling - English

China has warned the United States to be cautious in its words and actions with regard to territorial disputes involving China and its neighbors.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry warning comes amid a diplomatic wrangle over Beijing\\\'s newly announced air defense zone in the East China Sea.
Before this, Washington had warned Beijing against imposing an air defense zone over both the South China Sea and East China Sea.
US State Secretary John Kerry said recently that Washington would help its regional allies in protecting their territorial waters.
China and its neighbors lay similar claims to parts of the strategic and resource-rich seas.
The development comes days after Chinese fighter jets chased the US and Japanese military aircraft inside China\\\'s newly declared Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) in the East China Sea.
Chinese defense authorities say they have sent more fighter jets to the zone. The Chinese air force described the mission as a defensive measure in line with international law.
China says foreign aircraft passing through the airspace, including passenger planes, will have to identify themselves to Chinese authorities. The zone includes the skies over islands at the heart of a territorial dispute between Japan and China.
China is also locked in territorial rows with the Philippines over wide swathes of the South China Sea and has said it might set up a similar zone there. Senior Chinese officials have repeatedly called on Washington not to take sides over the issue.

In Japan, opposition is mounting against a decision to relocate the US military base on Okinawa. Opponents are now threatening with lawsuits and protests, demanding that the base be completely moved off the island.
The head of Nago group, which opposes the base, said that the organization would file a lawsuit challenging the governor\\\'s decision. Okinawa officials have approved the relocation of a controversial US military base on the southern island. About half of all US military personnel in Japan are stationed there. The stagnation of the relocation issue has been a thorn in the side of relations between Tokyo and Washington since 1996 when the two governments agreed on the original plan to move the base.

Washington calls Beijing\'s declaration of an air defense zone over the East China Sea provocative.
White House spokesman Jay Carney says the United States does not recognize the plan and will NOT comply with it. He says the US will continue to conduct its military operations in the region like before. Carney also says China\'s behavior is not consistent with its role as a major power and called on Beijing to scrap the air defense zone. China says its decision to establish the air defense zone in the East China Sea is in line with international laws and Washington should respect it.

Thanks to the 3-dimensional printing technology, now visually-impaired people have the chance to imagine and grasp a better understanding of what the world looks like.
One school in Japan is giving such an opportunity to its visually-impaired students with the help of 3D printing technology. One of the students had never seen a snow flake before, but the detailed model of a snow flake made it easier for him to imagine it all in his mind. The machine allows these people to imagine and understand things that are too big, too small or too dangerous to be handled. So, with just a simple press of a button, the students can choose from Japan\'s iconic Mount Fuji to a miniature elephant figure, in perfect detail and rendered in 3D.

More violence in Egypt. Riot police fire tear gas and water cannon to disperse anti-government protesters in the capital Cairo.
No word on casualties yet in the protest rally near the headquarters of the Defense Ministry. Egypt has been the scene of almost daily protests by opponents of the July 3rd military ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi. Large numbers of people have been killed in security forces\' crackdowns ever since. Many Egyptian officials and supporters of Muslim Brotherhood, on whose ticket Morsi won last year\'s presidential election, have also been arrested and put on trial.

The U-S Secretary of Defense says Washington has no plans to scale back its military presence in the Persian Gulf region despite a diplomatic opening with Iran.
Chuck Hagel made the comment at a U-S base in Bahrain. The Pentagon chief is visiting several Arab states in the region. The tour is part of an effort by the White House to soothe the perceived concerns of U-S allies over the deal reached between Iran and the P5+1 on November 24th. The United States has an active presence in the region from Oman and the U-A-E to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait.

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is in Pakistan with an aim to defuse tensions over Washington\'s controversial drone strikes in the country.
Hagel flew from Kabul to Islamabad to meet with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and other top officials-- including the new army chief. Ties between Washington and Islamabad have been seriously strained over Washington\'s deadly drone campaign in Pakistan\'s tribal areas. Human rights groups and Pakistani politicians say the missile attacks often claim civilian lives and must be stopped. In recent weeks, opposition activists in northwestern Pakistan have disrupted war supplies to US-led foreign forces in neighboring Afghanistan. The rising anti-US sentiment has prompted American officials to halt the shipments.

Chuck Hagel is in Islamabad, the first ever visit by a US Defense Secretary over the past four years. What brings him to Pakistan is continued unofficial blockage of NATO supply line via northwestern routes of the country to Afghanistan. However, the central government in Islamabad has little control over autonomous northwestern provincial government. The regional government unofficially blocked the supply routes last month to protest against the killing of thousands of civilians in US drone attacks in country\'s tribal region bordering Afghanistan.

Ira Helfand, the co-president of the group International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, says there are more than 17 000 nuclear warheads which have been ignored since the Cold War ended in 19 91. He says modern nuclear weapons are far more powerful than the US bombs used against Japan in 19 45. Nine countries are believed to possess nuclear weapons with Russia and the US holding the vast majority of them. Israel is the Middle East\'s sole possessor of nuclear weapons. The US pledged in 2009 to work toward the abolition of its nuclear weapons but said it would keep them so long as others keep theirs.

It\'s been more than three weeks since vital supply route for the US led forces stationed in neighboring Afghanistan remains blocked in the North West of Pakistan. The supply route at Torkham border has been blocked by activists of religious and political parties to protest against the US assassination drone strikes in the tribal areas.
However, the move by the provincial government, which is run by Tehreek-e-Insaf or Justice Party, has put the central government in difficult position. That is why these top Pakistani civil and military authorities gathered in Islamabad to find a way out of the ongoing standoff. Despite efforts by the central government, the provincial administration has refused to allow trucks carrying supplies for the US forces in Afghanistan pass through the Torkham border.Pakistan is considered important for the US to ensure its forces\' smooth pull out of Afghanistan. The US has recently threatened to suspend billions of dollars in aid to Pakistan if supply routes are not reopened. In the face off continuing US drone attacks, Pakistan\'s civil and military leadership has promised to safeguard the country\'s national interests. However, they have not been able to come up with a clear strategy to pacify the growing public anger against the CIA\'s illegal and deadly drone campaign.
