Egypt is tightening security measures along its borders with the Gaza Strip following massive unrest in the country. The new security measures are affecting the daily lives of many Gazans in the coastal enclave. Gaza has been suffering for several years from an Israeli blockade which has caused a lot of difficulty for the people living there. But now the new situation on the Egyptian border is making the economic situation in the coastal enclave much more difficult than before. Due to the tight Israeli blockade, Gaza depends on the tunnels to obtain essential supplies and cheaper fuel. Estimates show 40 percent of the coastal enclave\'s needs come via underground tunnels.

The Energy authority in the Gaza strip say a shortage of fuel has halted the production of electricity across the blockaded coastal enclave. They say this is because the stock of fuel is zero. The situation results from Israel\\\'s destruction of tunnels used for bringing fuel into Gaza. The Energy authority also accused the Palestinian Authority of charging Hamas too much for its fuel.

Egyptian army has increased its crackdown on tunnels between Gaza and Egypt following the toppling of President Mohammed Morsi. These days, you can see Egyptian bulldozers destroying tunnels along the border with Gaza more than any time in the past. Egyptian army has also deployed tanks which have pointed their guns towards Gaza.
The once bustling tunnels area nestled between the southern town of Rafah and the Sinai Peninsula looks more like a ghost town. There\'s no more transfer of goods or other vital commodities via the underground lifeline for the blockaded coastal enclave.

[12 Aug 2012] Mahmoud Abbas supports closing of Rafah crossing by Egypt - English
The West Bank government led by the western backed acting Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas has expressed its support to Egyptian authorities shutting down of tunnels between the blockaded Gaza Strip and Egypt.
Egypt sealed the tunnels last Sunday along with the Rafah crossing following the killing of Egyptian policemen near the border with Gaza.

The U-N says nearly a million Palestinians are expected to need food aid in the Gaza Strip next year.
About 800-thousand Palestinian refugees are currently receiving food aid from the U-N Relief and Works Agency-- UNRWA-- but the organization expects a 10 to 20 percent rise in demand in 20-14. The U-N\'s Gaza director of operations says the main reason for the increase is Egypt\'s closure of Gaza tunnels-- a measure which has deprived thousands of Palestinians of basic goods, halted construction projects, and led to job losses. The tunnels were the only lifeline for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The coastal enclave has been under the Israeli regime\'s blockade since 2007.

[1] Mystery of Egypt Sinai border attacks with George Galloway - 10 Aug 2012 - English
On Sunday, unknown gunmen opened fire on the Egyptian border security guards at a checkpoint near the Karm Abu Salem border crossing, killing at least 16 security personnel and injuring several others. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi called an emergency meeting with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces following the incident on Sunday, the Egyptian state media reported. "President Morsi says that this cowardly attack will not go without a response... and that those who committed this crime will pay dearly," said a statement issued late on Sunday by the Egyptian president's office.
After killing the border guards at a checkpoint near the Karm Abu Salem border crossing, the militants, who were wearing traditional Bedouin clothing, seized two armored vehicles and quickly drove off the scene. Witnesses said the militants also fired rocket-propelled grenades at the Egyptian army checkpoint. Meanwhile, an official of the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas declared that, "The border between Egypt and Gaza is protected. We closed the tunnels to prevent anyone from escaping (into Gaza) and we have put our forces on alert."
In Israel, a spokesman for the armed forces said that one of the vehicles exploded while trying to cross the Rafah border. The other vehicle was reportedly hit by an Israeli airstrike. Egypt has been trying to secure its borders following last year's revolution, which resulted in the ouster of Hosni Mubarak.

UN officials are calling on Israel to end the blockade of the Gaza Strip. They\'re warning that the situation in the Palestinian territory may get even worse.
The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees says the Israeli blockade has paralyzed Gaza\'s construction industry. Robert Turner also said that the demolition of tunnels used by Gazans to transfer goods and construction materials to the enclave has put U-N projects on hold. This, after Egyptian authorities also stepped up the destruction of the tunnels in recent months. Meanwhile, another U-N official, James Rawley has also waned about the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territory over a lack of fuel there. Gaza\'s fuel crisis has led to the closure of its main power plant in recent months. Israel imposed its all-out land, aerial, and naval blockade on Gaza in June 2007 after the victory of Hamas in elections there.

Continued Egyptian crackdown on tunnels between the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula has caused prices of goods to increase. Under the choking Israeli blockade, tunnels are considered as a lifeline for over 1.7 million Gazans. Tunnels are used as pathways to bring in badly needed supplies into Gaza including cement and fuel. Hamas says the recent Egyptian move will increase the suffering in the coastal enclave. People are seen standing in line for hours just to get few liters of fuel for their cars and electrical generators. Egypt\'s campaign on the tunnels began in March with the flooding of underground passages. The Egyptian campaign has intensified over the past two weeks ahead of a wave of opposition protests in Egypt, which is expected to start at the end of June.

The Lebanese Army finds tunnels in Sidon. The tunnels connect several buildings controlled by supporters of Takfiri cleric Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir. This comes as the Lebanese troops are also going ahead with their mop-up operation following fierce clashes with the armed followers of Sheikh Assir. The Army is reported to be in full control of the city and the troops have seized control of the radical cleric\'s base. The Lebanese troops have also seized rocket launchers, machineguns and military uniforms inside the base. They are still searching for the radical cleric, who\'s a staunch supporter of Takfiri insurgents fighting the Syrian government. Some analysts say the battle has been a major blow to the takfiris, others have a different idea.

Chiragh-e-Rah; Beacons on the Path of Glory, is a documentary that highlights the role and contributions made by Pakistani Security Forces in socio-economic development of remote areas along our western borders.
The Security Forces measured the threats and countered the nefarious designs head-on, with a comprehensive strategy. The essence was to:-
“Achieve enduring peace through stabilization of Western Zone by defeating insurgency; reinforced with a population centric and community driven developmental approach. Concurrent mainstreaming and education of youth to make them useful members of the society.”
Having addressed the menace of fear, terrorism & uncertainty, a new era of development and progress has been launched with the assistance of the government.
May it be:
Communication infrastructure like roads, tunnels and bridges to connect these remote areas to main cities.
Establishment of modern and progressive education system for the youth of the area.
Women empowerment initiatives.
Providing basic health facilities, provision of clean drinking water
Encouraging economic activities through promoting local industries
Mineral resources and tourism, providing sports grounds and other facilities for healthy and positive activities and to promote local talent
Restoration of law and order, establishing writ of the government.
The documentary highlights that; the day is not far when these areas will be at par and in pace with other developed parts of the country.

Palestinian killed in Israeli air attack
At least one Palestinian has been killed in Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip as the acting Palestinian Authority chief and the Israeli prime minister prepare to hold their third direct meeting.
Three others were also wounded in the attack which was carried out against a Palestinian "survival tunnel" in Rafah along the Gaza-Egypt border on Wednesday.
The tunnels, which link the south of the impoverished enclave to Egypt, have been serving as conduits for vital supplies to the besieged Gaza Strip since June 2007, when Israel imposed a crippling blockade on the costal sliver.
The perilous tunnels have been frequently attacked by Israeli and Egyptian security forces.
The Israeli army has not commented on the air attack yet.
The attack coincided with the third round of meetings between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and acting Palestinian chief Mahmoud Abbas to end the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The two previous face-to-face talks in the US and Egypt failed to bear results.
